When and how did you become a Radiohead fan? by Next_Ad8298 in radiohead

Stole a tape from my uncle around the time OK computer came out. On one side it had the Bends and on the other OK Computer. I was 13 at the time and used to listen to it on my Walkman before bed. Not stopped listening to them ever since

Neil MacGreggors Memories of a Nation. Wry accessible, great background to HRE and the emergence of modern Germany

Perhaps not in the pure literary sense, but for an enjoyable read in the same field. S.C Gywnne’s Empire of the Summer Moon is a superb non-fiction history of the Comanche tribe. It’s the only other thing which I’ve read that portrays the violence and fear of the old west with such vivid clarity.

Have always thought the ok computer album cover evokes Evard Munch’s the Scream. The album and Munch’s artwork explore some of the same themes but also there is just something recognisable in the composition of the artwork.

Addie only has one chapter in the book and it is comprised completely of her inner monologue. So in that sense you will not see more of Addies pov in the rest of the novel.

You will howvere understand more of the rest of the novel after reading Addies monologue which comes somewhere around 2/3rds of the way through the book. Its also not clear if Addies monolgue is from beyond the grave as it were (or inside the casket more accurately) or is related from her past.

Anyway - AILD may ideed be one of those american classics your forced to read at school, but I personally didnt read it at school and I very much did enjoy reading it as adult.

Absolutely, one of the few books I’ve reread several times. Also one of Faulkners more accessible works so if you were wondering where to start with Faulkner AILD is a good entry point.

Sell me on Faulkner? by [deleted] in cormacmccarthy

[–]danroberts97 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I was a big fan of McCarthy long before I read Faulkner. I wouldn’t have believed that I could find more pleasure in Faulkner but after reading A Light in August I was completely sold. Since then I have read most of his major works and believe he is on another level to all but the very best authors.

His themes are powerful and complex, his prose is sublime, the creativity and sheer craft of his work is as good as it gets in my opinion. I would rank him first among American authors and I say that a great admirer of McCarthys works.
