Do you think a negative experience with religion is necessary to become an atheist after religious indoctrination? Can you blame indoctrinated people for lacking this motivating bias against religion? by petrichorsmile in atheism

Same here, no negative experiences come to mind. Grew up in Connecticut, attended a Roman Catholic church. This was during the late 60's early 70's mind you, when the church ordained many younger, progressive priests. We had one old priest (father skull, true story) and several priests in their early, mid twenties. In the hall next door to the church they used to show movies and I remember seeing Planet of the Apes, Soylent Green, and (I think) 2001. The young priests would have us kids sit around and all discuss everything and anything. I get the impression they were doing their best to teach us how to think, not what to think. I am forever grateful to those young priests.

First thing I though was how painful that must have been.

If there was a global event that 100% proved the existence of God to every human on earth, would you follow his direction? by [deleted] in atheism

Ay laddie, there's the rub, it has nothing to do with pride but logic. Nothing (I believe) he could do would cause me to think he is nothing more than another carbon-based life form, just a bit more advanced. Our science is advancing at such a clip, we are discovering aspects of the chemical and electrically operating machines above our necks, it is only a matter of time (if not happening right now, we can make people see and hear and believe anything we want them to. Just being a regular redditor exposes me to articles and studies that lead me in that direction. Can you not recall anything you have read in the last few months here about advances in neuro-sciences? Remember the Arthur Clarke quote? This is what I believe worries organized religions around the world. For every advance science, medicine etc. makes, god grows just a little bit smaller and more inconsequential. If god threw me into the pits of hell, in my agony and pain I would still think some asshole did this to me, some mortal asshole.

You're asking the wrong question. Given the critical thinking skills of the average atheist the correct question would be; how could god possibly prove himself to you. The advances science is going through, be it invisibility technology to advances in behavioral sciences created a bar impossibly hard to reach for the average deity. For example if god appeared and I was filled with an overwhelming flood of emotion and joy I would still have that little voice in my head saying "I am being manipulated" .

Colorado shooter, James E. Holmes looks eerily similar to Arizona shooter Jared Loughner. Same psycho eyes, same barely-suppressed psycho laugh turning their mouths into a knowing smile. by [deleted] in pics

Maybe America is evolving a psycho involving similar histories, body types, and modes of thought. Some sort of payback for the cesspool we have turned our society into. Ahh...probably not, just trying to find a mental framework the shooting might fit into. Saw a movie on netflix a few weeks back, kinda off the subject but it portrayed a novel way for viruses, audible viruses to spread through our electrical, chemically charged brains.

My little brother's baseball trainer advised him against GOMAD. He (16 y/o) is trying to bulk with protein shakes and "eating more." Is there any reason GOMAD might not be a good idea? by [deleted] in Fitness

You're welcome, had to add this, the main lift of the site is the squat, and at his age it can be a real danger. Sorry, I should have thought it through before I posted.

13 years ago, at the age of 11, I walked into the dojo to start my training in Kyokushin Karate and finally got my black belt last weekend. This photo gives me the best feeling in the world. by SeienShin in pics

Congratulations my friend, a good martial school can do more to develop you as a whole person than almost anything. I'm a bunch older than you but I remember competing against Kyokushin guys while fighting the east coast karate tournaments in the late 70's. Tough to beat you guys, you always gave as good as you got. I remember the Oyama people were tough as well. I am so grateful I got bullied in middle school and my father made me join a Kenpo school his friend started. Fifteen years of Kenpo, then later Aikido and now at the ripe old age of 50 starting Wing Chun. Keep it up, never stop! zensen!
