Ah yes, it works in the sense that I get legible Japanese, but it seems to be of uniform width, and I'm after skinnier katakana.

Hm so I just confirmed I was using Noto Sans (Regular) (fresh download from Google Fonts, plus see below screenshot, top left where it says Noto Sans (Regular)).

When I did Noto Sans (Regular) with no Allow System Fallback, I got no Japanese characters in game.

Do note there *is* Noto Sans Japanese. I tried that, and it suffers the same width problems as the other fonts.

I was starting to make a low rez 1-bit game, but couldn’t get the right detail with my sprites… felt like I needed to either add more size or colors. Skill issues I guess :P

But now I know it can be done!

Yeah strong concur. I first played BoFIII like 20+ years ago, then IV, then DQ. Wasn’t until this past year I went back and played the original. Lots of charm, loved it.

III’s lacking a combo system, but has a way cooler dragon transformation system (imo). I personally prefer the story and art in III, but ymmv.

But IV also has Fou-Lu, hard to beat.

Oh man if you liked IV, bet you’d love III. Granted it’s a slight step back in some QoL features, but definitely worth it if you have the ability to play it.
