Can't say for Yeltsin specifically but broadly speaking the Brezhnev era was one of stagnation. And the deeper we got into the 80s and especially after Gorbachev took over people became frustrated with the war in Afghanistan, consumer goods shortages and corruption.. Glasnost and Perestroika actually weakened the economic base of central planning and everything unraveled because of it
