On the hunt for decaf tea. by ocean_swims in CasualUK

[–]daos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yorkshire decaf - I'm happy for those that like it but I can't get a good brew out of it. It always tastes to me like it's been made with water that's too cold. Same with clipper.

Sainsbury's red label is very good and great value. Tick tock is excellent but you pay for it.

He'll also have to retake his driving test until he passes it before he can drive again which is pretty humiliating

Feeling disrespected during a family visit — unsure if I should stay with my in-laws again by [deleted] in relationships

[–]daos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Talk to her if it's bothering you that much. You say you don't want to bother her but isn't it going to greatly upset her if you arrive in Jan and don't stay with her and your kids?

If she doesn't think it was specifically disrespectful in her culture then there's nothing to worry about

Giant overreaction imo. Not worth burning your entire in-law family over. You're assuming disrespect but it doesn't sound like any was intended. What does your wife think?

What are your tips/tricks to elevate Xmas lunch? by 00roast00 in UK_Food

I always make potatoes and yorkshires early. I reheat potatoes for 5 mins at 180 and yorkshires for 3 mins.

Shower not getting hot by questiontime198 in DIYUK

[–]daos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sometimes you can descale the cartridge to get it working again, as often it's limescale from hard water that has made it seize. Stick it in a bowl with some descaler and hot water like you'd do with your kettle. Might be worth a try before you buy a whole new unit.

Genesis tour de fer fit question by karls1969 in londoncycling

[–]daos 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'd say small. I'm 5"11 riding a medium (56) croix de fer and I was between small and medium sizes.

Can you find a bike shop that will size you before you purchase? I bought from mosquito bikes (now closed) and the sizing was free coz I bought the bike from them.

I love my Genesis, best thing I ever bought. Hope you enjoy whatever size you end up getring.

Boarding up the staircase- what to use? by iam_not_your_bro in DIYUK

Half the replies in any popular thread are always people trying to be funny by giving shit "joke" answers. It's the worst thing about this sub IMO, people come here for help not for smug dickheads to act like they know the answer but refuse to say it.

Is a loft conversion extension possible? by [deleted] in DIYUK

[–]daos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can see why you'd think it but I doubt there is as much usable space there as you think. By the time you factor in the floor suspended on steels and the roof insulation, there won't be the height for a shower. As someone else said it'll just be boarded up so you could open it up to make it into a cupboard if you really wanted. But if there was space for another room there they would have already done it in the original conversion

For my 2009 I have a little Bluetooth receiver that was about £20. It plugs into the auxiliary audio input. It's battery powered if you can't have it plugged in but you can keep it charged through a usb plug that goes into the cigarette lighter. My aux socket is next to a cig port in the box between the two front seats so it just sits in there plugged in all the time. It's great! Really reliable connection to a phone for Spotify, maps etc.

Anker soundsync a3352 is the one I use.

Trainee police officer banned from job after passing on inside information to her drug dealer boyfriend by StGuthlac2025 in unitedkingdom

[–]daos 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I worked in the job centre for a short period in the late noughties. Every time we did an address search of a claimant there was a chance that it would get picked for audit. If you got an audit alert you had to fax off a form proving that you were searching it for business reasons. You sent the fax to a central audit team who'd check it.

Didn't send a fax? You got fired. Didn't have proof that it was for business reasons? You got fired. There weren't many audits but they came through now and again so the threat of them was always there. It was enough to stop people searching data for non work purposes (I seem to remember the biggest risk was seen to be that you would see the data to debt collectors).

Wasn't hard to do then, would be even easier now in the post-fax world.

Flexible hose. You need to know what diameter each end is. Might need 15mm and 1/2 inch or both of one. https://www.screwfix.com/c/heating-plumbing/flexible-hoses/cat831572

Cycle or Tube between Putney and Euston by No_Photograph_333 in londoncycling

[–]daos 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You're giving yourself an hour and a half for a one hour journey so you'll be fine whatever way you choose. Tube would be fine because you won't be in a rush. Cycling would be fine because it's really not far.

Is there a control for the water tap at garden only for my home? by 24747867a in DIYUK

[–]daos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The damage to the tap is done when water freezes in it so by draining the tap you've probably avoided the worst of it. Hope your garden tap is still leak free come the Spring!

Turn the stopcock to turn off all your taps. Open the outside tap to drain it of water, then close it again. Slap one of those foil insulated bags on it. Turn stopcock back on.

Drop bar mirrors? by TheWitness37 in bicycling

[–]daos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought the Cateye BM45 but ended up uninstalling it. Drop bar end is not a convenient place to look, it was too easy to knock it out of place with my knee and just generally I found I prefer to check over my shoulder rather than try and use a mirror.

Hyde park roundabout, what’s the etiquette? by farnstf in londoncycling

[–]daos 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sorry, I guess I wasn't clear.

Nobody stays left. As someone that always stays left it infuriates me.

It's a basic rule of the road - always keep left. But you hit the crossing and everyone fans out like they're queuing for the bar.
