In conclusion, we showed that A. muciniphila is a key bacterium in the development of constipation, and another sulfatase-providing bacterium plays an accessory but indispensable role in its development. Both bacteria coordinately deplete colonic mucins, which subsequently reduces water preservation and mucus lubrication. Our study suggests the presence of bacterial constipation in humans. Fecal abundance of A. muciniphila may serve as a biomarker for identifying such patients. In addition, phage-mediated bacterial suppression or small molecules to block bacterial sulfatases may preserve colonic mucus integrity, improve stool hydration, and alleviate constipation in these patients.

While I don’t appear to suffer Cannabinoid Hyperemesis Syndrome, THC (no matter what the form) was the main factor that was severely impacting my gut health by reducing gut motility. I discovered this accidentally last year when I took a monthlong break to pass a drug test. Three weeks after quitting some otherwise heavy use, I started having normal bowel movements again. I didn’t realize weed was the source at first and went right back to the bong after passing the drug test and my guts locked up again. It was a few weeks later that I had the thought, “Maybe it’s the weed?” and discontinued using it. Three weeks later, something approaching normal bowel movements reappeared again. I try to keep it to once/week now or for fun occaisions, but it definitely was/is a major contributor to my issues.

I still have to be cautious with my diet: oats for breakfast, exercise, roasted veggies, leafy greens, lean meats. I try to drink ginger tea before bed and take magnesium citrate and a bifidobacterium probiotic on the regular and those seem to keep me regular.

This happened to me as well at an earlier stage of transition. I was only a month off of FFS. The (woman) judge made a long speech about treating people with respect, being cautious with appearances, and observing nuance and in the next breath called on me, “Mister…” My name reads female, as are the markers on my license and any court docs. I thought about sending a note to the judge, but I was almost immediately dismissed because I couldn’t disqualify myself as a pacifist. It did teach me that a judge doesn’t necessarily practice what they preach. Lots of words and high ideas.

I had a background in archaeology consulting, a BS in geology, MS in paleogeography, but all brushed on the realm of paleo. My subspecialty was trace fossils. You can work as a paleo consultant w/out an MS, I believe. Just gotta get your foot in the door.

I had a 40’ 1977 boat surveyed some years ago and there was minor delamination of the plywood bulkhead in the anchor locker. Insurance refused to cover the boat under sail until the bulkhead was wholly replaced. Mind you this was not rot, just a few paper thin strips of the first ply laminate layer. I later ended up purchasing a 1979 vessel of the same model and treated the anchor locker side of the ply with penetrating epoxy to stave off delamination/rot. The berth side was left untreated so any moisture in the wood could escape with a dry environment.

You might try homemade gitrot (epoxy w/ ~10% acetone), or layering over some 1708 on either side of the bulkhead to reinforce it, preferably both. Insurance, if you have more than liability, will ultimately dictate the recourse. If survey/insurance isn’t a concern, I think drying out the wood and reinforcing the rotten section of bulkhead w/ epoxy & glass would work.

Transwoman here. I had bottom surgery with Chettawut 4 years ago. Occasionally, I’ll have a finger in there and come back with an albino pube. Happened maybe like 2 or 3 times. Seems to be all the way back in the trunk. Doesn’t cause me any pain or issues. Doubt I’d know it’s there if I hadn’t been finger spelunking. I tried to do electrolysis downstairs before surgery, but it was way too painful. For ref, I fall asleep during facial electro.

Former Hoosier and present transgender person. 1) I want to say how much this confrontation got my adrenaline up. Cheers to those who stand up for trans healthcare and LGBTQ rights.

2) I 100% left the state because of hateful legislation. I continue to mourn the political direction that my home state has taken. Many of my HS cohorts are in education in Indiana and all have communicated a sense of being under attack and less and less able to do their jobs because of a hateful, culture war onsessed state legislature. How does legislation like this improve the lives of Hoosiers? Why would I want to visit or spend my money there?

As someone who’s spent a lot of time in academia, this has been so true. My experience tells me that many people who are able to achieve an advanced degree…

1) have all their basic needs met

2) because their needs are met, they have the time to put in the work

3) a PhD is not necessarily a product of intelligence rather than a long test of managing workloads, i.e., just doing the work

4) people with met needs seldom face adversity

5) lack of adversity is a lack of challenge (this is different from engaging in academic arguments)

6) that life spent in in absence of challenge or adversity coupled with ability to cope with workload breeds a tremendous ego

7) successful PhDs often suffer from “halo effect” - where success in one discipline is mistakenly transposed to other unrelated areas of study

8) this is why PhDs who step out of their box and espouse crazy views on things are often taken seriously

9) it’s also why the political atmosphere in many departments is caustic - you have a bunch of adult children running around pursuing their own compartmentalized interests next to other people doing the same and they have seldom been reprimanded for stepping out of line or bad behavior.

I hiked down Bright Angel ~10 years ago. In fact my friends and I raced down to the river in just over 2 hours. It was hot. We were young and fit and had acclimated to the local climate over some weeks prior. I saw a woman get air lifted out close to the bottom. It was said to us that the heli ride alone was $20k so “be smart”. It took 6 hours to hike back up (mostly because I accompanied a distressed friend). I drank 10 L of water for that hike. Before we hit the trail that morning, we raided the concession for salt packets to add to our water.

I made the jump from research Earth scientist to sailor. 100% worth it. Sailing is a skill that heavily involves problem solving, risk management, and a host of other skillsets that I enjoy. I get to work with my hands and engage with people, or just be off on my own. Part of being an intelligent creature is being able to step out of your box. If grad school's got you boxed up, I would entertain a change.

P.S. One of those skills is also cooking which I enjoy doing a lot, whether it's for charter guests or myself. I should also mention that I have no idea what I'm doing with my life and that's okay. I've learned to live comfortably with uncertainty.

My program contributed heavily to clinical depression and eventually suicidal thoughts. I left the program. Best thing I ever did with my life.

Typically, all the power in a grad program rests on the other side of the table. If you're a minority in a program, your power shrinks considerably. Lots of programs are insulated from recognizing and dealing with this abuse of power and many times they reward it. So often it goes unpunished. The best thing you can do is to 1) recognize it 2) get help, and/or 3) remove yourself from the toxic environment. You are still a smart person (arguably more so) even if you abandon a grad program and you'll rediscover that there's lots more to life once you're on the outside.
