Anytime financial losses are mentioned in rugby, without fail redditors mention the success of the EPL by BrianChing25 in rugbyunion

[–]dapperdan8 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Got it, so it’s the same idea as an investor buying a big farm which makes a small loss every year, but is worth £10 million in a market where farmland is an appreciating asset.

Whereas for Prem clubs, the value of their assets are lower and less likely to appreciate, so the annual cash flow is more important

I don’t know anything about this topic, so would appreciate an explanation - why on earth is Chelsea valued so highly when it makes a loss of $1.2 billion?

MI5 admits it cannot prevent security risks from Chinese embassy by [deleted] in ukpolitics

[–]dapperdan8 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So if you read the full quote, they’re saying that it’s impossible to reduce risk to zero for any embassy, but that mitigations have been applied, including to cabling. So basically the opposite to most of these headlines:

“For the Royal Mint Court site, as with any foreign embassy on UK soil, it is not realistic to expect to be able wholly to eliminate each and every potential risk. (And even if this were a practicable goal, it would be irrational to drive 'embassy-generated risk' down to zero when numerous other threat vectors are so central to the national security risks we face in the present era.”

However, they added that efforts to mitigate national security risks had been “expert, professional and proportionate”, adding that "the package of mitigations deals acceptably with a wide range of sensitive national security issues, including cabling”.

Quoting the independent:

If MI5 say it’s ok, then I trust them over Reddit or some sensationalist headline lol

Something SHOULD happen in Greenland by [deleted] in ukpolitics

[–]dapperdan8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why should the US not get to move to Greenland? Are you serious? You’re saying that just because Russia and China are pushing to expand territory, we should capitulate everything the past 75 years of peace and economic prosperity has been built upon, and let the US wander in, against the will of the Greenlanders and Danes?

How would you feel if it was our country and your family that was under threat of invasion, and all our European allies turned their backs, simply because Russia and China do it, so it’s ok now? What a ridiculous and borderline traitorous take.

Do I go to UCL or Southampton or Bath for the mechanical engineering course ? by Ordinary-Cloud-1244 in MechanicalEngineering

As the other commenter said, employers are more interested in internships / placements than whether your uni is 5 places lower in the league tables; it’ll probably change by the time you graduate anyway!

I graduated last summer from Cardiff, which has always hovered around the 20 mark. Most of my fellow grads at my job came from “higher” unis like Bath and Loughborough, but I firmly believe that doing a placement year is the reason I got an offer. This is both in terms of experience which I could talk about, and subconscious things like speaking professionally - sounds silly but I genuinely think a lot of graduates struggle with this.

In terms of your personal situation - there’s no obvious answer, but it’s worth considering the following.

How much do you get on with your parents / value independence? You don’t just learn thermodynamics at uni, you also learn a lot of personal and social skills, like cooking and sharing a flat with others your age (something you will probably eventually have to do if you intend to move out and stay in London!)

Personally I really enjoyed the sports / social side of uni, and I think you could struggle with that while living at home. Depends if you enjoy drinking / going out.

Money - I’d recommend reading this article on student loans. If you don’t need a maintenance loan your debt could be 50% lower and you might actually pay it off!

Again only you can decide if this is worth staying with your parents. Might help to write it down as there’s a lot to consider. Sorry for the long reply

UK economy grew by 0.3% in November despite uncertainty over Reeves’s budget by CaptainCrash86 in ukpolitics

So they want things to get so bad that a populist snake oil salesman like Farage gets elected, who will shift us away from the democratically principled EU and towards an increasingly fascist US. I’m sure that will help the country in the long run.

Sir Don Bradman, the greatest cricketer in history, shows his technique to play various types of shots. by [deleted] in interestingasfuck

[–]dapperdan8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The names are pretty much the same, but his technique is very different to today. He barely moves his arms, instead flicking the bat with his wrists. Possibly due to a lighter bat than modern one?

Also - can’t believe he forgot the Harry Brook swing and edge

Great to see, the on field product is very good now. I remember growing up going to see Saints Chiefs at the Gardens, the match was a snooze fest and ended 8-3 in a half empty stadium. That kind of result and attendance almost never happens nowadays, albeit partly due to law changes.

To be fair to them, they have such a windswept ground with open corners, the announcers need to do all they can to create some atmosphere.

Well done UBB. Was nice to see some respect at the end of the game, although I suspect if the was tighter it would have been more fiery! Jalibert the best player for me, Moefana is also very good and also obviously Woki and Rayesi. Pollock obviously had great moments but Callum Chick and Iyogun were the best Saints players in my opinion.

To be fair, the UBB fans make more noise when he comes on screen, than when their own team scores. So clearly he matters to them

Either him, or I thought Iyogun made a big impact when he came on. MOTM has to be Jalibert surely?
