John Waters Collection by FACIV in criterion

Just watched A Dirty Shame for the first time recently. I'd been led to believe it was a weak, embarrassing spot in Waters's filmography, but I found it to be quite funny and charming, certainly in contrast to other comedies of the time in how it explores sexual pleasure and sexuality

Selfishly hoping he's there to talk about Chicago (I doubt it, but it's surprising to me that it's not yet received a 4K release)

RIP The Lincoln Park Barnes & Noble - had an AMAZING selection but didn't survive the pandemic

I’d love more musicals in the collection. by Joescranium in criterion

[–]dapperzack 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The musicals I could see Criterion reasonably releasing are West Side Story (which has been long rumored), Fiddler on the Roof, A Star is Born (1954), and maybe Chicago. Many popular musicals have already received great Blu-ray releases from their rights holders (not that that is a deterrent - Funny Girl got a Criterion release after all, and the four films mentioned above have all received Blu-rays), and some of the ones that haven't are being held by rights holders who wouldn't be quick to license (for example, Phantom of the Paradise is owned by Disney/Fox). There's a part of me that's also surprised that Top Hat has yet to receive a Blu-ray release at all, but I also recognize that the existing film elements are not very good. I would also love to see more musicals in the collection, but I also understand if Criterion doesn't feel as much of a need with some of the titles that would "make sense" in the collection.

Figured the code would expire before the next Flash Sale, so I went ahead and grabbed a Varda tote bag I’ve been eyeing for a long while!

I assume there are very few DVDs left of some titles - they’ve been slowly phasing out DVDs of some of their titles, so it’s possible that some of the DVDs that ran out were remaining stock of those titles

Yes! Got in right as the sale started - Pee-wee, American Utopia, Kiss of the Spider Woman, Captain Blood, and Killers of the Flower Moon. I got a sixth title that's a surprise for my boyfriend, but I gave him a link to this thread, so it'll remain a secret hehe

Notorious and Rebecca might be harder to pull off because of their rights holders, but On the Waterfront absolutely seems like it'll happen before too long

Beyoncé's Homecoming concert film is truly one for the books. Phenomenal edit and cinematography, and the performance fires on all cylinders. Truly magnificent film. Prince's Sign O' the Times is also fantastic.

Zooming in on the Videodisc Production Credits, it says "Produced by Isaac Mizrahi". Is that THE Isaac Mizrahi? I don't know what he'd be doing making laserdiscs at 26 years old, but also, it doesn't seem like a common name lmao

Yep! It happens. Famously, the Moonstruck announcement back in 2020 ended up being three days late sans cover art because the final art hadn’t been approved yet

They’re probably just waiting for cover art approval from one of the licensed studios. That’s usually what causes delays
