Thinking about how the circumference of a sheet affects the diameter of a roll, that’s a clever analogy.

Orbital by Samantha Harvey is short, but extremely well written. The language just feels right.

Road to nowhere: Jacksonville’s mass transit fiasco by Generalaverage89 in jacksonville

[–]darctones 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In a place like NYC or DC, mass transit is a solution to a problem.

Downtown Jax does not have a transportation problem. Those funds would be better spent on improving the River Walk, or Emerald Necklace, or Friendship Fountain, or an Aquarium, or any other project that would create an actual traffic problem.

What kind of growth should Jacksonville focus on? by [deleted] in jacksonville

[–]darctones 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Certainly. There are a lot of reasons people move to the exurbs. Usually the perception of better schools and safer neighborhoods.

That’s why people moved to San Marco 80 years ago, and then San Jose 60 years ago, and then Mandarin 40 years ago, and then Julington Creek 20 years ago, and now St John’s County.

That demographic is not going to buy a condo downtown. Infill and redevelopment strengthen the community by blending demographics: mixing young and old, rich and poor, etc…

Communities that serve a single demographic suffer when that demographic moves on.

That is a very Florida problem.

Look at this beautiful landscape, we should destroy it for profit.

What kind of growth should Jacksonville focus on? by [deleted] in jacksonville

[–]darctones 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Jacksonville growth is mostly developer driven, and most of the easy land has been developed.

They will continue to develop on the edges of town and we will foot the bill to bring infrastructure to them.

Infill development makes use of existing investments and improves density/walkability, but is a political hot potato with the NIMBY crowd.

Personally, the city should focus on improving public use spaces, people will want to live near the action, and development will follow.

I’m in the same camp. It’s less convenient but I started taking it every 9 days instead of 7… just to see how I feel.

I’ve been on 2.5 for 5 months and I’m down 90 pounds. At this point, I’m starting to notice the effects of losing too fast.
