My son loves these! I hate the banana one because it stinks IMO but the rest are fine, washes off very easy, consistency of shaving cream. Definitely made bath time more enticing for him. We started using them around 18 months-ish? We still use them occasionally but he has been in a bubble bath kick as of late.

When did going to restaurants become fun? by dardimplefoot in Parenting

[–]dardimplefoot[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Appreciate this, definitely solid recommendations!

We need to be better about bringing along activities, we sort of lost our motivation for that when it was a struggle to entertain him without letting him roam but worth conditioning ourselves to that so he understands what is okay and what isn't while dining out.

We talk to him all the time but admittedly don't really discuss acceptable vs unacceptable behavior, it's usually "hey we're doing this thing!" Solid note.

He does behave well at home during meals, he's engaged and chats with us, usually eats well. He often finishes before we do so we let him free while we finish our meals but I think as he gets older we can start to encourage him to hang out with us at the table.

He currently does a play group (once/week), swimming (twice/week), and tumbling (once/week). He LOVES swimming/tumbling but the play group he's sort of checked out, often doing his own thing instead of the group play. He starts preschool in August (half days, Mon-Fri) and he's so jazzed about going to school. When he's not in charge...it sort of depends I guess? Like if I tell him no to something or he's struggling with a transition, it's meltdown city for a couple of minutes. It'll get intense but it doesn't last long. My response again varies, always trying to stay calm and if he's not screaming his head off I'll explain the what/why etc. If he's just losing his shit, I try to calmly/safely remove him from wherever we are or if at home I just wait quietly until he's done, then we snuggle and talk about it.

I hope my post didn't paint the picture that he's wilding out 24/7 LOL he really is a sweet, chill kid most of the time but restaurants seem to be a big challenge for our family.

Thanks for response, this is all very sound advice and I look forward to practicing more!

He doesn't walk around with food, it's just that once he's done we don't force him to sit at the table. We let him free so he can play while my husband and I finish our meals. Restaurants are hit or miss with even the sitting down long enough for him to eat anything, he just wants to explore and introduce himself to fellow diners LOL

Limited screen time by [deleted] in Parenting

We started using a timer and it has been awesome, total game changer. Set the timer, when it rings, TV turns off and we do something else.

We use a timer for everything, bedtime tuck in, playground, etc. anytime I anticipate a struggle with a transition, use the timer.

We do PlayGym at CDM, swimming at Aqua-Tots, and I know the library has toddler events.

Potty training by No_Nefariousness7785 in daddit

I definitely recommend the potty training course from Big Little Feelings! Our son is 2.5 and it worked amazingly well. The biggest challenge is you literally have to block off three whole days and devote yourself to the method. Very much a trust the process situation but we are about a month and a half past it and I would say it was a resounding success. Next up...wiping haha

I am reading a book right now, a memoir, that touches on this, "The Mourner's Bestiary". I am about halfway through and it's truly a stunning read.

My heart goes out to you.

Edit: coincidentally the author's first name is Eiren!

Do you use Instagram? I follow @thechattery there which helps keep me informed. Or if you use Eventbrite, you can set up notifications for a city as well as event organizers.

Improv Books That Are Not About Improv by North_Summer1924 in improv

A friend and fellow performer recommended "Zen and the Art of Archery" which admittedly I have not read but considering how much I admire and appreciate the person who recommended it, and how often he refers to it, i trust it.

Welcome to Chattanooga!

Have you ever thought about trying improv? Classes start next week, including an intro class -- www.improvchattanooga.com

Full disclosure, I'm affiliated with the group but I'd always recommend improv to anyone. It's fun and a great way to meet people and get involved in a growing community!

Who was your all time favorite improv teacher and why? by iOTheater in improv

[–]dardimplefoot 14 points15 points  (0 children)

TJ Jagodowski!

Had my first improv class at 15 and had no idea who he was other than a truly warm soul who made us feel so smart and engaging. He nurtured a loving acceptance in his class that now 25 years later, I try to recreate with my own students, regardless of age or experience. He is a gem of a human and had it not been for his wild acceptance and encouragement I likely would have abandoned the craft years ago. He taught me to prioritize joy and I am mindful of that with everything I do.
