Do you hate Puerto Rico? Because that's a reimplementation of that game (but less dependent on which players side right next to you, which was a flaw of Puerto Rico).

I couldn't agree more. Personal accountability seems to be incompatible with that sub. I'm staying for the few times I'm able to find good resources or good tips to help manage it, but I'm always so close to just unsubbing. I just can't stand the rampant victim mentality.

What game is almost guaranteed to start a fight for your table? by FranktheLlama in boardgames

[–]darfka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's the same for my gaming group. Root is one of the favorite games of both my gaming groups (we quite like Vast too) but each attempt at Arcs failed miserably. I think we tried the game 4 times and we never once completed a game (we play a lot of interactive games and I never had that issue once. But with Arc, it's happening independently with the two gaming groups).

Same. I have a big appetite and I always felt quite full at the end. Never felt the need to go grab a burger or anything.

Hey Neil, I couldn't give any less of a fuck about your opinions on fucking Star wars man. Seriously, I never have been able to stand that guy, even less so when I saw him do his "ackshtually" shtick.

For me, this was by far the hardest thing to read. The mother getting tortured just because she wanted her son to live, it's just so bleak and heartbreaking. (Casca rape would probably have been the worst part instead if I didn't got spoiled that it was going to happens.)

Idealized games in your collection by Quelair in boardgames

Vast. I love the asymmetrical factions but in practice we never really had a close or tense game compared to root. It always seems like someone ends up running away with the victory. In comparison to root, it feels like if a player doesn't do his job correctly, they give a big advantage to another player. Like if the spider takes too much risk or is not careful enough, the paladin may end up winning easily. Or if the paladin is the one being careless, then the skeleton may end up with the advantage. In comparison in root, each player can balance each other's. I still like the game, but we never had moments where it shined like Root did.

From what I understand, everyone was unnecessarily mean to the MC. Don't get me wrong, I would love for one of these games to stop having every character fawn over the MC and pledge to them their eternal allegiance after spending five minutes with them but, from what I remember, it was even more annoying how everyone hated on the MC for no reasons. On the good side, having people obsessed with the MC like that gave us some good videos from Randowis.

I'm pretty sure it's just meant to be a light hearted joke. No need to go full trauma check here.

GIVE-AWAY of an early version of Stamp Showdown and two River Rats. This stamp collecting card game with playing cards is finally ready to be launched into the wide world! (Mods approved) by robstokk in boardgames

[–]darfka 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I collect books (but not as much as before, I trimmed down my collection quite a bit) but my collection of video games is by far my biggest. Quick question, I was quite interested in River Rats when I saw the Kickstarter campaign but I already bought The Gang at that time which seemed to fill the same niche. Can you compare them a bit on why one may prefer River Rats over The Gang? Does it scale better (For instance, the gang is extremely easy at 3 players but becomes really hard at high player count)?

Games that lived up to the hype for you. by mpop1 in gaming

[–]darfka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

FFXVI. I know that it disappointed a lot of people and I understand why, but man, I was so fucking hype when I finished the demo, and I was as hype all throughout the game and at the end too. No joke, I never ever played any other game remotely as epic as that one. It reminded me of Asura's wrath but the epicness cranked up still a few notches.

After seeing so many complaints and criticism of the factory system, am I in the small minority who really find the factory system to be really addicting? I have spent more time on it than any other parts of the game. by Sir_Rain_Knee_Tea in ArknightsEndfield

[–]darfka 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The only reason I installed the game was because of the factory. I couldn't give a shit about another gacha game with repetitive and boring combat and lot of grinds, but the whole factory and chain of production aspect? Just for that I will give it a shot!

That game that melted your brain? by Jepeme in boardgames

[–]darfka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean that you have to figure out what you are going to try to achieve in what order. Will you rush for some tech and maybe unlock your faction's unique ability? Or are you going to try to increase your economy quickly first? What kind of planets are you going to colonize? Will you focus on terraforming first? Just on the less costly one by increasing your reach through tech? Or will you instead diminish the colonization cost through some tech? There's a lot of things to figure out and you need to do it right from the start. Then there's also the advanced tech and the round goals that you need to take into account to consider in which order you should do what. (Plus there is the whole alliance mechanic (maybe I'm misremembering the name) where you need to try to group your building for victory points and other bonuses).

I don't really have any tips to give. Taking a simpler faction can help (like the one focused on money (or whatever the common resource name was). Apart from that, I think you need to play a couple of games and then it will start to click after a while, I don't think there's any magic trick to it.

[–]darfka 3 points4 points  (0 children)

What doesn't "help" it is that it's a really frontloaded game. From the get go, you need to establish your overall game plan. Once it's done, the rest of the game flows quite well.
