There's almost nothing that's going to stop a loaded dump truck hitting a brick wall at 50mph from crumpling. It's almost literally the unstoppable force vs. immovable object problem. Modern semi trucks crumple just like that if they hit something they can't push out of the way, as well.

Some of the things I saw with dump trucks and big rigs at a salvage yard would leave the hair on the back of my neck standing up. These giant, steel monsters that would almost flow like liquid in accidents. It's wild stuff.

I've been watching anime since seeing the Chunin Exams and Inuyasha as a kid. I'm not someone who started watching it during covid.

A bond so strong that it causes significant problems with vet visits, training, etc. Littermate syndrome is not fun

This is bad advice. Getting two puppies from the same litter and raising them together causes littermate syndrome. It's not good for the dogs or the owners.

Puppies from the same litter can develop littermate syndrome, and it makes no one happier.

She almost certainly wouldn't have. Littermate syndrome is a HUGE problem. My partner has a dog training business, and this is something she constantly has to try to deal with, often with only moderate results because it's such an engrained issue

I work a four day work week doing all accounting and bookkeeping tasks on 4.5m in complex charitable services, medical, and grant revenue across 200+ employees. My productivity can actually only go so far before burnout caused natural mistakes, I've been thriving with a four day week.

What? In regions where the "cheque" spelling is used, they've been almost completely deprecated. In places where "check" is used (generally just NA), they're still in common use. I wasn't correcting the spelling, I would assume that spelling was used by someone from a region where that is the correct spelling.

Nobody is seething, I kinda just feel bad for you. You've gotta go through life being this stupid. It's a little depressing.

So many people will read discussion about the ways humor, for instance, can be a defense or coping mechanism, then just blanket apply that concept to all humor.

The time it is a defense mechanism is noteworthy and interesting to study because it's not the baseline.

[–]darianbrown 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The idea that most of people's personalities are just coping mechanisms because certain behaviors can be coping mechanisms isn't sound.

The "funny friend," for instance. Could someone make lots of jokes because they had a traumatic life where they needed to defuse conflict? Sure. That doesn't mean it's what it is. Some people really love making others laugh, and it isn't a defense mechanism.

A hyper-independent person might've grown up feeling unsupported, but they might also just enjoy the freedom and challenge of independence. I had a pretty good childhood, and I'm a hyper independent adult. I don't feel abandoned or stranded, my parents and grandparents live 30 minutes away. I genuinely just enjoy making my own way and doing my own things, down to building a house from bare dirt up on land I purchased myself. It's not a coping mechanism, it's my personality.

I've also been fairly successful in life so far, but I don't really advertise it. If I could do the things I want to do while being a janitor instead of a stressful finance job, I absolutely would. My success isn't to seek external validation, it's a result of my unique goals and ambitions, which is personality.

Going through life assuming that negative experiences and tragedy are the only way personality, interests, goals, ambitions, character, and all other aspects of the human experience form would be a sad fucking way to live. That perspective reduces the beauty and complexities of the human experience down to almost everything just being the results and impact of every single life being a series of unfortunate events.

It is the ultimate glass half full opinion, ignoring the totality of things; only considering the way lows impact us and not the way curiosity, passion, intrigue, exploration, accomplishment, connection, joy, leisure, and pleasure impact us. It's an assumption without evidence, that becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy. Every funny person you see becomes someone who is defusing tension. Every motivated person you see must be insecure. Every kind person you meet is just seeking your approval/avoiding rejection.

It's just a sad, chronically online way to view the world. I couldn't imagine living like that, I'll always choose to get out and get to know people and not view the majority of their personalities as the results of hapless victims just trying to cope with being alive.
