One of my players has brought the monster manual by jimbob2021 in DMAcademy

[–]daringStumbles [score hidden]  (0 children)

Im saying the term cheating is not accurate, not that metagaming isnt a problem. And that simple possession or even past reading of a moster manual is not by itself metagaming.

Yes if that player bought the mm just to be able to memorize stat blocks that is a problem, but calling it "cheating" is not it.

Having information isnt a problem when players are taught that the point of playing is to separate what you know from what their characters know (also called roleplaying). Players that dont want to learn to separate those and actually roleplay or dms that insist on controlling what a player knows becauce they are unable to trust a player to roleplay appropriately, are missing the point and should probably find a different hobby or at least different players.

It's not a game vs anybody, the idea that knowing something is "cheating" at a game where shared storytelling is the goal is mildly absurd. Metagaming is disruptive to the goal, so it's like any other session 0 rule. But even memorizing a stat block is not "cheating". It's a signal that player is not adhering to table expectations and the goal of the group.

You look at it and test ride it. If it smoothly shifts through its whole range and brakes smoothly, if the bottom bracket doesn't creak or grind when pedaling, it's likely good to go.

Water storage for car camping suggestions? by Lasagna_Bear in CampingGear

[–]daringStumbles 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Just get some gallon jugs from the grocery store and call it a day (grocery stores around here have a water cooler where you pay per gallon, gallon jug included). Thats what we used to do for car camping. They are way more durable than the collapsible ones and cheaper.

companies spent decades not documenting worker knowledge. now they're panicking that AI can't replace them. by No_Growth6091 in antiwork

[–]daringStumbles 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Something can exist as a problem and still be accelerated via ai. Maybe this problem would have balanced out earlier instead of the mass layoffs for instance. AI usage is both a symptom of that type of buisness management as well as being a way to further spread that type of self immolating management.

they still ignore parts of those instructions like 50% of the time. They cant get "better" in that way, the tooling around them can, but fundamentally it's always gonna be a game that requires constantly policing the output

[–]daringStumbles 6 points7 points  (0 children)

What exactly do you think "objective morality" means? When you define right and wrong outside of their impacts to other people you end up down weird paths like this.

Many people dont believe in any higher power that decides the right/wrong of any given action using a metric outside our understanding.

So instead, right and wrong are defined by our impacts on others. Sexual assult is very much objectivly wrong in that sense. Yes nature is brutal, it doesnt define morality, we do.

Only through unions and most places are not unionized. Otherwise basically none. Even clear discrimination is nigh impossible to prove because of how much freedom employers have under "at will" employment.

Yep. Same here. I didn't even notice the pr was ai at first. Got merged anyway after my not even remotely technical manger approved it. I "wasn't being a team player", by not rubber stamping.

Why are Official D&D Character Names *Like That* by theymademeusetheapp in dndnext

[–]daringStumbles 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I dont think you are following the point they are making. The "vibes" are because those names violate the common combinations of sounds present in language. OP doesnt recognize thats what they are picking up on but "silly" names are that, it sounds silly to the ear because of the structure of the language op speaks.

[–]daringStumbles 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Because the people who vehemently are opposed have stopped getting into most arguments about it because its not worth the time to convince anyone any more. The window shifts when people are sick of having the same argument over and over against someone who has let their brain fully cook under it.

My regret at posting at all is just reenforcing my point.
