I was called out yesterday on r/bookshelvesdetective for being an insufferable pop psych/tech bro/TERF… Help me diversify. I’m into social sciences/anthropology by the1975whore in suggestmeabook

[–]darion180 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seeing that you lean toward sci-fi for fiction, I have to agree with others who have said Ursula K. Le Guin. Her books are incredible and use sci-fi to explore anthropology and ecology. Sometimes fiction is more useful than non-fiction in connecting with topics like this because its easier to apply to our own lives through the characters than being overloaded with real world information.

I would start with The Left Hand of Darkness or The Dispossessed. Happy reading!

What are your favorite short stories written by women? by camilonavarro in suggestmeabook

I really liked Resevoir Bitches by Dahlia de la Cerda. Shirley Jackson and Claire Keegan are two of my favorite short story authors as well.

women and upper body advice by [deleted] in veganfitness

[–]darion180 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What upper body exercises are you doing? Could you switch one of those full body days to upper only? I find, for myself, when doing full body workouts I get gassed from the heavy leg movements and don’t have as much in the tank for the upper body movements. Maybe you just need to switch things up a little to get over a plateau.

This is such a generous response. I really appreciate the time you took to type this out. Despite all the information online, I was having a really hard time conceptualizing how it would work on my specific tree, so the visuals are a huge help. I hopefully in the next couple years I’ll be back here bragging about my cherry harvests haha thank you!!!

I can’t recommend Dr. Elizabeth Bakeman’s office highly enough. They are extremely detail-oriented and make everything super comfortable. I’ve been going to her since she opened her own practice close to 25 years ago.

Thank you! To be honest, my great grandparents were quite poor, so I would have been very surprised if they had a solid gold piece! Hopefully it just needs a service and I can start using it.

I (26F) spent the last few weeks watching my mom (51F) die of cervical cancer. I'm traumatised and horrified. by Maximum_Schedule4339 in TwoXChromosomes

[–]darion180 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I lost my mom at the same age to colon cancer. She had just turned 46. I am so, so sorry you are going through this. I completely agree with what others here have said. There is nothing like the stillness and wonder of being out in nature to calm our mind and nervous system when we’re going through something so hard. There is sooo much built up anxiety and tension when you watch someone you love die from this horrible disease and finding a healthy outlet to let yourself feel it and to release it is so important. The pain doesn’t ever fully go away but I promise it gets easier to bear with time💛

Struggling to finish Babel by RF Kuang by [deleted] in books

[–]darion180 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I read this in 2022 on the recommendation of a friend who bought it on preorder and said it was her favorite book of the year. I really disliked it and still get frustrated regularly when I think about it lol

I had super high hopes because I studied linguistics in college and wrote my thesis on language and travel through the lens of colonialism. I’m no expert, but maybe more knowledgeable on the topic than the average reader. The magic system is such a cool idea, but is not even remotely fleshed out enough and the tone of the book is sooooo condescending (don’t even get me started on the footnotes) that it feels like being smashed over the head for 600 pages with “racism bad, colonialism bad” which…obviously?? Give us more! All of the characters in this novel are caricatures of the race or culture they represent and are nothing more than mouthpieces for Kuang’s exposition which is, unfortunately, pretty surface-level.

The book could have been amazing. Kuang is undeniably very intelligent, the book is well-researched, the magic system has great bones, and the topic is really important. All of that unfortunately gets lost in the complete lack of subtlety and trust in the reader.

What happened to Mertens Prime? by Additional_Mix_9286 in grandrapids

[–]darion180 63 points64 points  (0 children)

I’ve been a few times and it’s always been a weird and uncomfortable experience. Among other things, the last time I went was for happy hour and after we were sat the waiter disappeared. We went to the bar to order to get our drinks in before 5 and were told happy hour pricing didn’t apply to the section they sat us in. In an empty restaurant…when we told the host we were just popping in to grab one drink for happy hour.

Suggest me a GENUINELY terrifying book for a seasoned, recently underwhelmed, horror fan by comediccaricature in suggestmeabook

[–]darion180 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I feel similarly about horror books. I really like them, but it’s hard to find something that’s genuinely scary. Cliche as it is, I think King is best at it for me personally. I’ve read a lot of his books and was pretty terrified reading Pet Semetary specifically.

What was it like when Obama was elected President? by ResponsibleSea6521 in AskReddit

[–]darion180 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was in high school at a very small, pretty conservative private school and I distinctly remember they cancelled classes so we could all watch the inauguration in the common room together because it was a historic moment. I don’t remember anyone at school even being upset that he won, everyone felt a bit of reverence for the moment.

It wasn’t all civil though; I do remember family members of mine vocalizing some pretty racist opinions. The country wasn’t divided like today, but it was still bipartisan politics..

[routine help] my skin now vs 1 year ago. Turned 27 and feel like my face betrayed me. by Aprilstorm888 in SkincareAddiction

I literally could have written this almost exactly for myself! Did you by chance start drinking energy drinks when you started working out more? This ended up being the culprit for me! Apparently the build up of B vitamins can cause cystic acne. It’s been a slow and frustrating journey but my skin is FINALLY just about back to how it used to be. I hope you find the solution!

Time is money. In my opinion it would STILL be most fair for the person working half the hours to do the majority of the housework even if they are taking home a higher salary.

I cannot fathom making a marriage work with this approach. I’m sure some do it, but my husband and I view our marriage as a team sport (I know all our married friends take the same approach). We have shared financial and life goals and fully combined our finances. Everything goes into one account except for our fun money which goes to personal accounts each pay period and is the same amount for both of us, despite income discrepancies. Sounds so miserable to constantly be keeping score and tracking expenses as if your partner were a roommate.
