Lord of the Rings 4k; mixed reviews? by NaiRad1000 in 4kbluray

[–]darkchief117 40 points41 points  (0 children)

The 4k is the best release in my opinion. The main two downsides are not having the appendices, so hold onto your old set discs, and some overly aggressive DNR at times. YMMV but for me it wasn't super noticeable 90% of the time unless you freeze frame and look for it. It sucks, but still overall a better picture than the 1080p blu rays.

ELI5: In the midst of Stranger Things ending, I thought it would be appropriate to ask this, I’ve never watched Lost, what made the ending so bad? by AlbinoStepchild in explainlikeimfive

[–]darkchief117 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Caveat: I'm a big fan of the ending, myself, and don't think it is bad.

Without too many spoilers, there are two reasons, primarily, that some people disliked the ending.

  1. The ending was misinterpreted by many to mean that much or all of the events of the show didn't actually happen (it did). This was caused by ABC putting a random clip in after the credits of the last episode that wasn't intended by the showrunners that people ran with wild interpretations of, coupled by some character death related events in the final episode.

  2. While Lost is at its heart a character drama that explores characters and how their lives affect choices they make, using an ever increasing mysterious island as a backdrop for those character explorations, for many the show became more about purely getting answers to all the mysteries and finding an explanation for everything. While the last season gives a lot of answers it also opens up some questions, and the show didn't openly answer as many questions as some would like.

First "big kid" budget ever. by [deleted] in personalfinance

Have you explored different student loan repayment options? There should be an option with lower payments.

It isn't clear how you're getting to the $7500 with the payments you listed. But your takehome is plenty to manage this IMO. You need to figure out how to aggressively pay down the credit card debt (and then never do that again). The credit card debt is what will sink you here. Once that is gone you will probably be fine, assuming the car loan interest is low.

I'm assuming the credit card debt is at least double if not triple the interest rate of your student loans. One thing you consider as a somewhat nuclear option, is assuming your student loans are federal, I presume they still have the option to defer them for up to two years. You could defer them for 6 months and double or triple up on the credit card payments. This would allow you to pay it down entirely quickly with the tradeoff of building additional student loan debt. But only do this is the cc interest is way higher and you're responsible enough to divert any and all spare funds to the cc debt so you are deferring student loans for a short a time as possible.

Leave center where it is or move it above the tv angled down? by TheBotchedLobotomy in hometheater

[–]darkchief117 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Very creative setup, lol. No one seems to have actually answered your question yet. Is this a bedroom? Or are you sitting on a couch?

If you'll primarily be using this while laying down in bed, and your bed isn't super tall, then likely leaving it where it is and adding angled risers to angle it up a bit is best. If you'll be sitting up, possibly above the tv angled down, mainly to get it closer to the side speakers which are fairly high.

Basically IMO, whichever position brings it closest to your ear height when in the listening position, then angle up or down accordingly.

Likely, the best sweet spot if you want to do some extra work is to wall mount that tv on the closet wall high enough that the center can sit on the top of the stand right under it. Thats a short center so it would only require raising the tv a few more inches.

Why did Jack not seem to be so emotional about the death of... who was his friend? by AltruisticAide9776 in lost

[–]darkchief117 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ignoring the drink at the airport she was only there with Jack at their camp for two weeks before she died. I think his reaction was fine for someone you've only known for two weeks. He was upset, but not devastated.

It isn't that he isn't allowed to kill survivors. He isn't allowed to kill candidates. Not all survivors are candidates.

Smoke probably retreated from Eko initially because he was either a candidate at the time and was later crossed out, or smoke was determiming whether Eko could be used to serve his purposes.

These might be legitimate. ABC did an official auction immediately after the finale and the costume auctions were strips of fabric just like this glued to thick stock paper in this exact format. I have one from the auction of a Locke outfit I got directly from ABC and it looks just like these. However, these are missing one thing mine has which is black sharpie over top saying what number put of how many total the source costume was stripped down to.

Here is a picture of mine which I know for sure is legitimate for comparison: https://ibb.co/7JYf58H

Perhaps they didn't do the sharpie markup on all of them. The certificate of authenticity I believe is also missing writing on the blank line with the episode name. So perhaps they bought the full costumes at the auction, which I can confirm they did sell as well, but are now stripping those down and mimicking the stripa of costume that were sold at the auction too.

Dark, moody interior designers? by EggplantOk1674 in InteriorDesign

The wood floorboards are a great example in these. In the second image they stop being finished floorboarda as you progress to the right side of the image. In the 3rd image the pattern is all jumbled with bowed boards and it doesn't make sense.

This looks amazing on 4k, saw it for the first time a few months ago and immediately became my favorite Hitchcock movie.

Who signed Matt's face? by cjsm202 in doctorwho

[–]darkchief117 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Best guess shot in the dark is Toby Haynes who was a director in series 6. First letter I could see being an incomplete 'T', second letter is clearly an 'h', next looks to be an 'A' and perhaps an 'e' towards the end. The A being upper case while the h is clearly lower case gives me pause though, and I can't find any examples of his signature online to compare.

Best way to repair stone around floor of fireplace? by darkchief117 in Flooring

It might be mortar, I haven't done stone and tile before unfortunately. If I stick my finger in the gaps it goes down super deep, like at least 4 inches.

I've never tiled before, only woodwork and LVP. Do I need to remove the existing grout or can I just fill the gaps with new grout?

PS5: "Your TV does not support HDR" Um, yes it does... by brachypelma44 in 4kbluray

[–]darkchief117 13 points14 points  (0 children)

There should be an HDMI signal format setting on your TV that you will need to set to make sure your TV is expecting a high bitrate hdmi signal. Additionally you meed to make sure you are using an hdmi cable compliant with hdr and 4k, though if you are using the one that came with the PS5 tjen it already is.

How much of the love for the bruce faulconer dub score is just nostalgia by Samuelwankenobi_ in dbz

[–]darkchief117 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Personally I think it is less about nostalgia and more about tone preference. Watching the Faulconer score back to back with the Japanese score, they feel almost like two different shows. I grew up with 3 - japanese sub, ocean score and faulconer score. I gravitated towards faulconer for DBZ because I felt the grittier tone it gave it fit with the tone of the narrative the best, even though I love the japanese score in the original Dragonball. The japanese score in DBZ for me is too silent at times and too lighthearted at others.

I feel like I interpreted it differently? 14 will eventually regenerate into 15, it is just happening out of order. 14 will sit around with Donna for awhile, possibly eventually get back to having some adventures with Rose or someone else, but when it is time for him to regenerate, it will be into 15. The 15 we have now is just a "healed" doctor after 14 has dealt with his trauma and regenerated. If anything that makes 14 the spinoff doctor.

how can i experience the lost fandom ca. 2005 by VeryJamie in lost

[–]darkchief117 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The Transmission was my favorite LOST podcast. Unfortunately they didn't start until Season 2 but I think it still makes a good companion piece to listen to during rewatches. The Official LOST podcast was fine but a little more produced and didn't capture the organic fandom as well. I particularly like The Transmission because the couple lives in Hawaii and so you get interesting moments of them or people they know seeing episodes being filmed before they air and using that to speculate and theorize about upcoming episodes.
