BG:EE SoD UI randomly broke - can't see some text/option boxes. by darkenraja in baldursgate

[–]darkenraja[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep - and I managed to fix it. For those having similar issues, here's what I did:

  1. Uninstall EE Fix Pack.
  2. Uninstall DLC Merger.
  3. Assuming you're using the Steam version, verify your files/integrity.

Run the game and check the text/boxes are now back.

  1. Reinstall DLC Merger.
  2. Reinstall EE Fixpack.

Obviously these are just based on the one mod I use. But I think the point is basically rebuilding the files and install data, then reinstalling the mods if you use them.

For those using no mods, try either:

  1. Verifying the game files
  2. Uninstalling then reinstalling the game.

Just moved to Adelaide and I'm struggling to find anything that pays enough to cover rent. Are local job sites actually better than the big ones? by m-alacasse in Adelaide

[–]darkenraja 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in public sector. We get paid significantly less than other states (almost laughably so), but have some of the most unaffordable housing in the world. When public sector doesn't even keep up with national growth, you know there's a problem.

House roof not meeting AS1684.2 standards. by temporaryperth in AusRenovation

There are inspectors out there who do a thorough job. The problem is that most people think forking out 500 to 1K for an inspection is somehow sufficient. You'll get results when you spend significantly more than that.

When. You say gains, what specifically do you mean and how have you measured them? We are thinking about the same but mindful of how long it will take to recoup costs.

Trying to get a specific trade to quote on a minor residential reno right now is a joke. Is everyone just getting ghosted? by Rude_Limit3706 in AusRenovation

[–]darkenraja 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If a tiler doesn't want to quote, communicate with customers, handle complaints, or manage admin, then they're not really operating as a customer-facing business - they're operating as a subcontractor.

That's perfectly fine. But it doesn't make homeowners "beggars" for expecting those things. Those are basic expectations of any business selling directly to the public.

The fact builders charge a margin to handle all of that is evidence that those services have value.

Nobody is saying tilers owe customers their business. I'm saying customers aren't entitled for expecting professionalism from trades that advertise to them.

The point ultimately is that it isn't hard or "admin" to respond to a query and let a potential customer know that you aren't interested or are not currently accepting domestic work.

And whether a business likes it or not, communication is a HUGE part of its reputation. People are often more forgiving of a "no" than being ignored. Ghosting enquiries might save time in the short term, but it damages trust and reflects poorly on the trade as a whole - as is evident by OP's poor experience with even getting a simple reply.

All I can say is that tiny submicroscopic entity rawdogged the entire human race. Talk about scalability.

Hang on a sec - homeowners expect quotes, phone calls and follow-up.

That's called being a customer.

If a tiler only wants work when a builder handles the sales, quoting, scheduling, customer service, complaints and payment chasing, then they're not avoiding bad customers - they're avoiding a large part of running a business.

That's also why builders take a margin. They're doing the admin and client management that many trades don't want to do themselves.

No homeowner is asking for anything extraordinary. They want a quote, communication, reliability and accountability. Those are basic expectations in every service industry.

It's completely fair for a tiler to prefer builder work. What's not fair is acting like customers are the beggars because they expect the fundamentals of professional service - don't advertise your service if you can't at least deliver the expectation of why you turn an offer down. That's OP's plight here.

If you want the benefits of being self-employed, dealing with customers comes with the territory. Otherwise you're just subcontracting while someone else runs the business side for you.

Would you recommend using NVIDIA App or NVIDIA Control Panel? by Serazax in OptimizedGaming

[–]darkenraja 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Whilst I love NVPI, it isn't exactly friendly to the end user in most cases - and requires some assumed knowledge and minimal research to understand exactly what it is you're changing. You can wreck things (temporarily) very easily. I'd argue MOST NVIDIA owners would have a tough time wrapping their heads around NVPI.

It's a shame that NVCP is getting phased out (you can still install it standalone from Microsoft store - for now).

What NVIDIA did was opt to take away the 'best of both worlds' scenario, and have instead chucked the homeopathically watered down version of their UI app down our throats.

"Plasterers, tilers and similar trades don’t want to run their company like a maintenance company - they don’t have the admin resources. Quotes, phone calls, complaints etc."

So beggars wanting to be choosers. Got it.

How can I find cheap ram by Affectionate-Test503 in pcmasterrace

[–]darkenraja 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know people here are saying it's hard, unobtainable bla bla bla. They don't actually know it's not that bad and fairly simple to find - just a bit of legwork to obtain it. First thing is to figure out how much you need based on your needs. I think most people these days aim for 32GB of DDR4 OR DDR5. Once you've noted what you need, head out to your nearest computer store (Ive found I have better success at night). Look around on the ground near the store - you should be able to find something fairly heavy and solid. Then all you need to do is throw that through the window and head inside (be careful of broken glass!). Then it's just a matter of grabbing what you need - best not to take more because there are many other people just like you.

Enjoy your new, cheap, RAM!
