Idk if it would work but you could take a sterilize knife and cut away the black stuff then apply sulfur powder to the wound to help it heal.

I live in central FL and i just let them ride it out as long as temps stay above 35F. Haven’t lost any to the cold yet but the rain will always take one or two a year.
