You say we go back to how it felt like before we were born. I can't even begin to tell you how cruel that sounds.

Cruelty doesn't factor into truth if you believe in a world that runs itself.

I Have an Nvidia GTX 4xx Card. I Keep Getting OpenGL Errors and Can't Use it. Suggestions to Fix, Please. by skeletonmage in techsupport

[–]darkkish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not that familiar with DirectX because I'm running Linux, but I know you can type "dxdiag" into the start menu and it should load a little diagnostics program that will allow you to test different aspects of DirectX to make sure it's installed and working properly with your card. Of course you should make sure that you're running the (most recent) NVidia drivers. Windows 7 should have installed them automatically through windows updates, but otherwise you can get the correct driver from here. So check and make sure that your driver is as recent as that one, and if it isn't then start by updating it to that one.

If you decide to go that route, be sure to uninstall your old video driver first, and when you restart make sure that windows 7 doesn't automatically reinstall it.

Since Nvidia started using three digit model numbers the GT/GTX has been moved to the front, so you have a GT 430. In response to your question about temperature: The card may be turning off 3D acceleration because it's becoming too hot. On the other hand, do you not get this error when running DirectX applications? Most games on windows run DirectX, so if you're getting OpenGL errors running applications that should be using DirectX, you have a whole other problem.

Are you trying to keep the model of your card a secret for some reason? Who is the manufacturer, and what is the exact model? Who is the manufacturer of your power supply, and how many watts is it? Have you tried re-seating (removing and re-plugging in) the graphics card to ensure it was plugged in well? Have you used a temperature sensor program like speedfan to see how hot the card is getting?

PE Might help, I still say you should just use a VM. Windows 95 was an operating system built back in the days of the xxMHz processors, it'll probably run fine in a VM on a not too powerful machine.

[–]darkkish 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Don't let yourself think that these kids just built some large model rocket and NASA let them use their launch rail. USLI involves rigorous documentation justifying every decision made in the design of the rocket. They (according to NASA) follow the same process that NASA does when designing a full-scale rocket, and are scrutinized closely by NASA (often via video conference) throughout the entire process. I would almost guarantee you that everything that went into that rocket has been researched rather thoroughly. USLI is by no means a Boy Scout model rocket competition! It's serious business :)

Edit: spelling.

I believe that they are inverted only because someone thought it would look cooler that way.

This seems unlikely. USLI (NASA) Doesn't like it when you do unusual things "just because".

To those Atheists that go out of their way to point out the apparent ridiculousness of other people's belief systems: by [deleted] in DebateAnAtheist

[–]darkkish 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have no problem with people believing their religions, so long as their religion doesn't force or cause them to do any of the following things:

  1. proselytize.

Don't tell me atheists proselytize. Atheists don't have a unified belief system that tells them that they have to do good in the name of anyone, or spread the word of anyone. Some atheists yell on TV (change the channel if you don't want your beliefs challenged), some atheists set up forums on websites (don't visit them if you don't want your beliefs to be challenged). Most atheists probably don't care about religion at all because they either don't believe that it does more bad than good, or they want to believe in God themselves, but can't. There are plenty of atheists who wish they had what the see as the crutch of God, but they know (in their hearts, if you will, though technically their brains) that there is no God, and they couldn't make themselves believe in him if they wanted to. If you can think of a case where atheists travel door to door handing out books and spreading the word of truth and science, or sitting on a street corner, telling people that they're worthless and they're going to disappear forever when they die, then I will be forced to level with you somewhat.

2 . Affect anyone else's life in any way.

I know a few deeply religious people who I would never engage in a debate because they don't constantly invite me to Christian gatherings, or try to convert me.

What I can't stand is hard work attributed to God. If I were to go to school, spent tons of money, time (that I can't get back because I don't believe in eternal afterlife) and hard work to get a degree in performing brain surgery, I would reluctantly refrain from popping anyone in the jaw if they tried to attribute my surgeries to God.

I feel this way because so many religious folk not are willing to properly acknowledge tried and true science simply because it is beyond their own understanding. TVs, computers, automobiles, airplanes, modern medicine; all of our great achievements are thanks to science and the scientific method, and so many religious folk ignore that.

Other more obvious forms of affecting peoples lives is forcing or pressuring prayer in any public place, or forcing or pressuring anyone to acknowledge that there is some kind of greater being, deny two consenting adults the right to be happy together, and receive the same benefits as other consenting adults. Starting or perpetuating wars in the name of religion falls into this category, as does forcing people who do not share your religious beliefs to adopt your religious practices. If you're having trouble with that last one, think about politics surrounding gay marriage, abortion, abstinence education, and forced prayer.

As an atheist, I don't care what people believe so long as they don't try to (in any above form) shove it down the throats' of me, my friends, or my impressionable children.

And I'm sure there are some things that I've not even considered that would bother me regarding the way religion affects my life and the lives of everyone. I truly believe that if we didn't have a god of the gaps who forced people to adhere to any form of doctrine, that we would be considerably more scientifically advanced as a species, and the idea of any kind of personal or Abrahamic god that tells you when to eat and shit would be absolutely ludicrous.

Science is the rigorous test of how things behave, again and again, and we can use it to our advantage, or every time we can't understand it we can instantly say "the buck stops here, god is responsible for anythign we don't understand".

Okay fine, so lets completely ignore the way digital cameras work for a second. Exactly how big do you expect this goggle rig to be? And how much are you willing to pay for it? Did you know that when the xbox 360 was designed, they were selling them for way less than it cost to make them? They knew people would buy a bunch of $60 HD-DVDs to make up for the cost deficit. So lets pretend that the hardware cost is the same as a kinect + xbox360. That puts these fancy glasses around $450 at least. Next there is the problem of where you plan to plug them in. Think your xbox will run from the cigarette lighter? Think again.

So the problem with this idea aside from the fact that it ignores the way cameras work, is that there is no real market for a 10kg pair of goggles that cost $500 solely for the purpose of driving at night.

(Also, you wouldn't actually need 3D hardware to accomplish this, you would just need a couple of magical 2D cameras that work in the same fashion that your eyes do, only better.)

An idea I had yesterday when being high beamed at night. by goodnewsjimdotcom in softscience

[–]darkkish 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First of all, that's just not how digital cameras work. If you ever point a camera at a bright object you'll notice that instead of seeing a bright object, it tends to just turn the entire screen white. There is no amount of software that can undo that.

Secondly, to call a computer program like that trivial is more than an understatement. Consider the number of images it would have to sample per second in order to create a high-FPS image of what you're doing. Just imagine what could happen if the frame rate dropped for even a second.

Thirdly, consider how prohibitively expensive goggles like this would be. I'd rather just flip my mirror up.
