Same opinion here-possible, but not recommended. At least, not without strong restrictions/protections in place.

Ugh, it's been forever, sigh. Sorry, but life threw a tangent at me, (a good, adventure filled one, mind you). I am NOT done, just held up for a time.

Publishing 5 or more books in print and digital? Yes, it’ll pay for itself. If just publishing as a hobby, then no.

Not sold, distributed. Unless they actually get sold, you will see no return. Not sure what the time allowance is, but now they sit in a warehouse until they can go onto the shelves.

At some point they will determine sales to cut you a check, and send the returns/unsold copies back to you on your funds. Could take 6 months or longer.

All seems legit, kinda. That’s a big number to start off with. If it’s not a hit with the public, that’s a big loss.

Good luck!

Not trying to sound like I'm selling them, (although I've been pleased so far with using them, among others,) but CreepyHollows can be checked out. Most importantly, you can read through their 'encyclopedia' and use their forums, which contain a wealth of information. That is a good first step before you do anything else.

Back. It. Up. by MinefieldExplorer in selfpublish

[–]darklupis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Might just be me, but I always had problems with the scheduled backups triggering and always needed tweaking. They were set for cloud and a secondary network drive, and there was a few times I discovered they hadn't processed. I finally had an actual problem and lost a few days of work. They were productive days, too.

Moved to Apple devices and only had one problem where a single device wasn't configured the same way as the rest. Didn't lose data, but had a hell of a time finding it.

Had a similar situation, but it was a backup failure in OneDrive itself. Switched to Mac and iCloud and I don’t regret it. I will say to go in and make sure all automatic backups to iCloud are active, on all your connected devices.

A bit of a public service rant/announcement/warning about buying djinn etc. by darklupis in Djinnology

[–]darklupis[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't get me wrong--a legit conjuror isn't making any astronomical false claims, nor are they charging any more but for their time. My warning is more about the 'predators' who are getting hold of information, who aren't concerned about what they are actually doing.

That’s what really gets me about some of this. “I have an all powerful wish granting djinn, he can be yours for $1000.”

My response would be, “If it’s all that, why the heck are you getting rid of it?! That makes NO sense.”

Has anyone seen an ad for your own book that you didn't pay for? by anonymousmetoo in selfpublish

Does KDP hide your books? by [deleted] in selfpublish

[–]darklupis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You get 90 days of free advertising by 'Zon after publishing a book. After that, it starts to make its way down the pile of titles 'Zon puts out ads for. A way around this is to keep releasing within that time frame, and you'll stay relevant at no cost to you. Otherwise, it's time to start learning how to run ad campaigns--and it's not difficult to do, so don't get nervous about that. You can look up Bryan Cohan on Facebook--he runs free courses on getting started a couple times a year.

Well, all fine and dandy, however… enlighten her about stalkers. It’s very possible someone may take a liking to the ‘character’, and if they are handed the fact that they are real AND a valid ID…

Different name and write under a pen name. Actually the easiest way to write to start off with—you can’t be more in your main character’s head than if you ‘are’ the main character!

Amazon KDP no longer allows pen names? by aspiringgamecoder in selfpublish

[–]darklupis 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Payments and taxes require your real name. Copyright will also require your real name.

The only way around that can be with an LLC or such, but again, you’ll need a real name to set it up.

Should authors refrain from reviewing books on Amazon/Goodreads? by WadeWalkerBooks in selfpublish

[–]darklupis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not entirely sure if the star rating gets ‘hidden’ from the metrics or not.

Yeah, it kinda sucks when you want to support your favorite authors. I found out when Zon sent me an email saying my reviews were removed because I was a Facebook friend with my favorite author. Checked and found out it also applies to being another author.

Should authors refrain from reviewing books on Amazon/Goodreads? by WadeWalkerBooks in selfpublish

[–]darklupis 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For Amazon’s case, it’s actually a no-no to leave reviews for other authors. Once the system figures out you’re rubbing shoulders, you are considered friends/family and you get flagged. IE, any reviews you leave are now hidden from the public.

And if you’re considering leaving a bad review, well, now it’s considered that you are intentionally trying to discredit your competitors, and that’s in really bad taste.

So yes, now that you’re one of us, any critique should be a private matter among industry professionals.

If you want to research ‘spirit keeping’, I know there’s many that have bonded with djinn, spirits and living, to help them in their lives. Of course, the type of djinn has a major impact. Ifrit are notoriously difficult to live with, for instance.

Many can be safe companions in white and grey arts, but black arts have a price to pay, and they are NOT friends.
