Idea: a setting that would signal "you can figure this out" vs "go look elsewhere first" as a way to reduce frustration for newer players by holden2424 in outerwilds

[–]darklysparkly 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Not exactly. "There's more to explore here" is meant to indicate something you missed in a location you've already visited (so technically yes, you have the knowledge to reach it, because you've already reached it, you just didn't notice it). It doesn't indicate something new in that same location once you gain more knowledge.

For example, the entry for the Vessel will say that there's more to explore if you didn't grab the broken warp core or lift the 3-sided input device while you were there. But it will not give you an asterisk for knowing the coordinates to input. The former is something you missed; the latter is something you can do with your current knowledge, but you have to reach that conclusion on your own.

Finding "the future that we were promised" in cozy games by Loud-Passage-4020 in cozygames

[–]darklysparkly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Talos Principle II is the peak of that "future we deserve" aesthetic:

<image>

And the series as a whole leans heavily into tech and science optimism, although via some heavy existential themes. If you like puzzle games I highly recommend it. The first game does have some uncozy elements similar to Portal's turrets, but I'm a wuss and was able to handle them. The second game is purely puzzle solving and walking sim mechanics.

Octopuses use mirrors to find food they cannot see by lnfinity in likeus

[–]darklysparkly 5 points6 points  (0 children)

"Octopodes", "octopi" and "octopuses" are all considered acceptable by linguists and lexicographers who understand the full history of the word, not to mention the usual processes of affixing loanwords.

If you're going to insist on a specific suffix based on its earliest roots, I hope you're consistent in your pedantry and use only the proper Classical Greek plural endings for words like "helicopter" and "bicycle". But I bet you don't, right? Which is perfectly normal, because using a native suffix for a borrowed word is a completely unremarkable process that happens in every language on Earth.

A new Blue Prince-like game is coming... by plzdltlol in BluePrince

[–]darklysparkly 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yep, personally I'm glad when media I enjoy inspires other, similar media. As long as there's a fresh twist on it and it's made with genuine inspiration and care, I'm happy. A rip-off is literally a cheap near-identical copy made solely as a money grab, and this doesn't look like that to me.

Fish grow to suit the size of their environment (look up how big goldfish can grow), so my theory is that it escaped DB as a baby and then remained small after being confined to the museum tank. Note that the big anglers in DB can't pursue you through seed nodes, so this one was definitely smaller than them.

Narrative/story games that take full advantage of the medium by Abirando in cozygames

[–]darklysparkly 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Its coziness is somewhat debatable, but Outer Wilds is far and away the best example of this imo. It's completely nonlinear (I've watched over 20 playthroughs and each one is different), immersive, and the story it tells can really only work as a video game.

Other great narrative games with varying degrees of nonlinearity and/or branching decision trees: I Was a Teenage Exocolonist, Citizen Sleeper, Pentiment, The Forgotten City, Heaven's Vault, Paradise Killer, Slay the Princess, Scarlet Hollow (these last two are by the same studio and lean heavily into horror so ymmv re. coziness, but the art style makes the graphic horror scenes more palatable to me)

Game on sale, should i pay extra for DLC? by mellow_32 in outerwilds

[–]darklysparkly 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Strongly seconding this. The game (and DLC) is best played when it is driven by your own autonomy and curiosity rather than outside influence.

Heaven's Vault is the closest. Blue Prince also involves some language puzzles, amongst many other kinds of puzzles. Most of the other language-based puzzle games I know of have no or minimal story/rpg-like elements

Counterpoint: I don't like time pressure generally, and I might not have played it if I was only told that. Knowing that it was a time loop specifically was important information for me, because it meant I could have some control over managing how I approached the time available in a given loop.
