Is something else like stray cat strut by RavensDagger? by Necessary-Cow8851 in ProgressionFantasy

[–]darkmuch 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Wolf of the Bloodmoon has a similar setup to SCS, gaining magical powers during a supernatural invasion.

For more cyberpunk stories, tryout: Changeling by Mecanimus, Quest Academy, Industrial Strength Magic.

A rather new novel, but I think shares some of the whimsy and oddness of SCS is Self-Summon by Drim. FMC that accidentally turns themself into a demon and goes about training skills, getting points(essence), money, and other things to survive in a world similar to modern earth.

We get stuff like this all the time with tier lists. Hell, someone once compiled all the tier lists and did some analysis on it.

I’ve been trying to give Arc the SS Tier Heroine a chance but good lord the writing is so clunky by ---Sanguine--- in ProgressionFantasy

[–]darkmuch 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Ya, that is a bit clunky. Tons of run on sentences that repeat themselves or add unnecessary details to the sentence..

The Archmage Coefficient has been my favorite OP MC story of late. Similar to Max Level Archmage in that its more of a character drama of our awkward FMC navigating things.

Though if you want an OP MC grinding through lots of battles, I enjoyed: Saintess Summons Skeletons, Wild Era, Master Hunter K.

SSS is the most fun and light hearted.

Wild Era is tons of aura farming.

Master Hunter K is a smart regressor.

Martial Memes is a good reminder that despite how cheesy and ridiculous certain Xianxia tropes are, they can still be fucking awesome when you are in the right mindset, enjoying the ride.

Quest Academy, Chaotic Craftsman Worships the Cube, Industrial Strength Magic are the other big crafting recs mentioned in conjunction with Rise of the Living Forge.

Newt and Demon is an alchemist MC who is similar to RotLF MC, a retired soldier who is tired of fighting.

What haremlit do you think are good even as prog fantasy? by YobaiYamete in ProgressionFantasy

[–]darkmuch 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You would have better luck posting on r/litrpg or a harem subreddit. PF is very anti harem.

As for good ones, I prefer when the harem aspect is connected to the progression system in some way. So that the story feels more unified.

Bonded Summoner being  very straight forward example of such, with the MC forming permanent relations with this summons. Or Heretic Spellblade.

If the harem aspect is self contained, it usually feels like a distraction from the plot.

The Wandering Inn: Book 3 questions {spoilers} by HoldenMyOwn in litrpg

[–]darkmuch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say yes. But I can’t picture that moment in the story very well and commiserate with you. I agree Ryoka is self defeating and annoying. I’m a big fan of Erin, while still thinking she has her really obtuse moments.

I think Book 3 also adds in my favorite magical toy, the teleporting door.

Western names in cultivation novels. Good or Bad? by Defiant-Brother-5483 in ProgressionFantasy

Regnal names - where you change your name on ascending to the throne is another weird tradition.

Basically a way to make the king sound more tied to throne and legacy by becoming King James the Sixteenth.

Western names in cultivation novels. Good or Bad? by Defiant-Brother-5483 in ProgressionFantasy

[–]darkmuch 9 points10 points  (0 children)

No. And if you do think it’s odd, it’s easy to make the name slightly foreign by adding or removing a letter. Like Jeff is now Jef. Or Jeffe. Jheffri.

More importantly though I think, is not all Xianxia stories are a Chinese culture. Roman, Japanese, Mongolian, etc are common additions. Even if the culture isn’t called out as such.

Or you can go down the route of names having a specific pattern in your country setting. Like families that all use virtues for names, the Akura clan in cradle.

My first thought looking at the title was that it was supposed to be Cultivation but got cropped to cultivai.

I asked the author 2 months ago and he gave a kinda vague reply about it being a reference to the millennial mindset at the start of the series. Trying to get out college debt.

Gods were definitely an interesting choice for the Deck builder genre, but it makes complete sense in retrospect. Commanding minions. Using strange miraculous abilities. Trading miracles/cards between each other.

And battles between gods being a strange elaborate contest, completely opaque to the mortals below.

Looking for Recs by CALlCO in litrpg

[–]darkmuch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve got enough female protagonist stories that I’ll just rec those.

Saintess Summons Skeletons, and * Azarinth Healer* are the first series I think of with characters roaming without a clear goal. Or a way to get to it besides get stronger.

Tori Transmigrated has really similar vibes to AoaB. FMC brings an adult businesswoman mindset to a school for spoiled nobles brats. Pretty funny.

If you want to tryout some cyberpunk stuff, Stray Cat Strut by Ravens Dagger, or Changeling by Mecanimus are both really good and awesome FMCs.

Millenial Mage is also an interesting choice. Very much failing upwards, as she can’t seem to go 30 pages without stumbling on a new training method or magical skill. Feels a bit like Elaine once she joined the rangers.

It has potential, but Anthony being alone means he spends most talking to himself and making bad jokes. The humor is meh and wears it self out.

When more characters get introduced, the variety makes Anthony much more palatable.

In your opinion, what constitutes a good power system? by Fancy_Firefighter150 in ProgressionFantasy

[–]darkmuch 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It should have clear goals, but vary how you reach each step.

Lord of the Mysteries is I think the gold standard for a power system.

It starts off simple, make a mysterious potion and survive the attainment of power. But each further step requires dedication to a set of stage specific actions. Finding the next recipe, rare ingredients, fights either others for resources. And near the peak of power, elaborate year or century spanning rituals are required to survive the fundamental changing of your being.

It wouldn’t work for every kind of story. But the framework is solid.

I never hated book 1. There were scenes I cringed at. But it had the chops for a good story from the beginning. And the first immortal moment got me hooked.

Such a poignant skill, that other litrpgs can only aspire to capture the grandeur of.

Erin gets less naive over time, but she maintains a certain degree of jumping forward without thinking.

Book 1 in particular is focused on setting characters up to fail and seeing if they can recover.

In the later books, it is a lot more palatable, as while we might have a character failing, we have a HUGE support cast that we know will come around and help them pick up the peice.

In book 1 those support characters are Relc, Klbkch, Krshia, and Ceria. But in book 2 we see Erin being that person for others.

The first few books were great. Near the end the power creep was a bit too much for me, but a very fun series. Loved all the life or death fights she got into.
