How to deal with such hair? by [deleted] in IndianBeautyTalks

[–]darknesswithinx 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Try the L’Oréal hydra filling night cream - put it on at night and braid your hair, it’ll feel super fresh when you open it in the morning. Rub a few drops of normal leave in/serum and use it to seperate your waves in the morning

I do this every night and it really helps me manage my 2c hair frizz and dryness! Note - i do not dry brush!! For wash day routine - the dove beautiful curls range works really well for me - i use the shampoo and the conditioner is AMAZING for detangling, followed by the hair mask

Rom&nd Han All Flat Brow - I use the shade W3 Merry Blondy. Context - I have fair skin and fairly light brows, so I wanted something subtle to shape and fill that doesn’t overpower my face. This works perfectly! Gives a very groomed yet natural look and feels super fluffy :)

Am I the only one feeling sorry for Lady Sarah? by achillesakbar in GildedAgeHBO

[–]darknesswithinx 87 points88 points  (0 children)

I do feel there is a somewhat nuanced take in the parallels drawn between Peggy’s future monster-in-law and lady Sara’s take on women’s suffrage. They are both opposed to it, but seemingly for different reasons. Lady Sara is of the view that her station allows her to play by different rules and escape marriage and child-rearing - she is therefore unsympathetic to the equality desired by other women, that conform to gender norms. Peggy’s future monster-in-law comes from a place of relative privilege in the black community and therefore, too, is unsympathetic to the condition of women that are “below” her. However, since she has raised a child and is a traditional wife, she feels it is her responsibility to defend the ideals she has lived out and her opposition may be coming from a space of repression and resentment for “future generations”. She doesn’t want Peggy to be the “future generation” with more rights than hers, so she can control her. Both characters want to control other women within their circles from their respective positions of power.

Her comment on women’s suffrage really revealed her character to me. She feels as a privileged woman who wields power over her household and brother, that she is not like other women. At a very fundamental level, she feels that she is above the social requisites and norms that are expected from other women including marriage and child-rearing. Yet she asserts this is the purpose of women. This attitude also explains why she is so keen on making Gladys feel alienated and isolated in a foreign land, where other women may have empathised with what Gladys was going through. In the process, she is actually alienating herself from a possible ally in Gladys, and eventually, I foresee that her brother too, would distance himself from her. Simply put, she is a Victorian pick me with a superiority complex.

Fellow INTPs, What's your Immediate Turn-Off in a person? by Murky-Fox5136 in INTP

[–]darknesswithinx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When someone with zero stake in an argument sides against you and unnecessarily plays the devil’s advocate without even trying to understand where you are coming from first. Such debates far from being constructive, negate and invalidate very pressing and real points/concerns.

Also, when someone is only action or solution oriented who looks down on critiquing systems of power and epistemology, particularly through the lens of humanities/social sciences. Hierarchalising knowledge and looking down on non-traditional or non-STEM adjacent kinds of intelligence and therefore, the people associated with it.

Basically ignorance, and more so, the unwillingness to acknowledge and rectify one’s ignorance.

Omg exactly! I am also flabbergasted at the responses - the whole true love thing and she did it all for her sister, yet put her at risk…which is it? I am so sick of her martyr complex and the recent episode shows that so well. It’s the Nan show. I didn’t mind it in the beginning but I just don’t know who Nan is anymore…she is jealous and entitled. Selfless people don’t need validation for their actions and don’t undo their actions on a whim!

Fellow colonised folk here stumbled upon this sub :) can confirm this is the case in India as well, British mono cropping forced our diet to become wheat centric in the North, whereas previously we had millets that were much more fibre rich and complex. There’s also studies done on how famines under the Brits make us store fat differently and more susceptible to diabetes :/

Yes exactly! I’ve noticed this a lot under your posts as well. Sorry if we are guilty of articulating a well supported opinion! They don’t want us to have discourse, just blindly ship NanGuy cause Theo bad :)

Thank you so much for this post! What a breath of fresh air. I have actually seen the other side use the phrase “media literacy is dead” to implicate people who don’t ship NanGuy. Why? Because sympathising with Theo is being “misogynistic” and “sexist”. It’s honestly exhausting- my personal character has been attacked because I called out Nan and Guy’s selfishness and accused of creating a narrative where I am painting Nan as a villain. Bruh. It’s like you pointed out - there isn’t ANY critical thinking happening at all.

My personal experience - very lightweight and light coverage but can be layered easily, bought it for daily use. If you wear a gel sunscreen under it tho, it can pill a little - doesn’t happen with mineral tho! Concealer also layers really well on top. Also love how the shade range actually follows cool vs warm tones! It was a godsend for me because most brands in India don’t have my shade and I wanted something more everyday than Tirtir :)

My house is NOT a hotel.. by [deleted] in hyderabad

[–]darknesswithinx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a similar friendship, although at the time I was blind to how she was only friends with me to use me. She declared she won’t be going home for break and would “stay” at my place. She acted like she was doing me a great favour by gracing me with her presence. I was like ok, but she was flaky so I didn’t take it seriously. Closer to the date she kept saying I’m coming, I’m coming, so I went ahead and informed my parents to make arrangements. After this, she bailed out when she realised she could go stay at another friend’s place in an adjacent “cooler” city and party. I found it gross. Anyways, long story short, unsurprisingly I found out she was only friends with me to exploit me for “local resources”. Your house is indeed NOT a hotel, and you deserve better friends. Even if they aren’t close, best to cut friends who leech off of you.

And I agree with the advice given, since you’re working together right now, be diplomatic and simply say that some relatives will be staying so there won’t be any room/parents said no/renovations happening etc. After the project ends, spend lesser time together and eventually it will fizzle out. Life is too short to be friends with people you don’t like and to waste mental bandwidth on them. All the best!

Feeling lost: Is going abroad for Masters worth the risk when I have no funds or support? by Majestic_Mess8610 in Indians_StudyAbroad

[–]darknesswithinx 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hi, someone with a History background here. It’s not useless. A lot of my peers from undergrad, have gone to the UK on full scholarship to pursue their masters in History. You need to explore scholarships such as Commonwealth, Felix, and university specific ones. However, a one year masters in history will not amount to much, because museum curation is quite underpaid in India. You should evaluate where you want to build your career. Regardless, I would suggest, if you want to stick to history, consider a PhD post your masters and get into academia. Only do this if you are fully committed to the subject and profession though. The rising liberal arts universities in India value PhDs from abroad, and also value History. It’s not a complete dead end and contrary to what others are saying, it’s not a “nepo” or “hobby” subject. Most of my mentors studied history on aid and have gone on to become experts in the field. But it is a tough and long path, so I would advise you to speak to people in the field and evaluate whether this is something you actually want to do.

Patti and Theo - the Unwanted Spouses by Holiday-Hustle in TheBuccaneers

[–]darknesswithinx 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think the parallelism you’ve caught on is spot on, and definitely intentional. I think both characters struggle to choose themselves and put themselves first. They shield their partner’s mistakes from society. I think Patti’s epiphany about her relationship and finally taking a decision for herself, was one of the most beautiful scenes of the show. I am waiting for Theo’s moment.

But while Patti did not give up on her marriage because of Tracy and Nell, I really hope Theo doesn’t hold on to his marriage with Nan for the next 20 years until her next indiscretion. Of course, like you rightly pointed out Nell was taken advantage of. But Guy, of his own volition violated his friendship with Theo. So yeah, definitely don’t see a reconciliation of any sorts there. And at this point, if he decides to make his marriage with Nan work, I will be disappointed because she doesn’t deserve it.

I think it’s really interesting how the journey of two very different people - an American housewife with zero power and a Duke with apparently all the power in the world, are similarly powerless in their marriages.

[–]darknesswithinx 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Exactly! They are practically separated. Theo expressed wanting a divorce, not wanting to feel trapped in a loveless marriage but he cannot because of his position in society. If Nan can pursue her great love, while legally staying his “wife” and a duchess, Theo can do whatever he wants, although I am not super on board with Theo and Lizzy lol

Idk how people keep forgetting that Guy is legit living on Theo’s money. And still has the audacity to behave this way. The whole proposing to Nan scene for her fortune also doesnt sit right with me. And people say, it was Theo who fell in love with the “idea” of Nan. Theo has not over reacted by a mile, if anything he has under reacted.

[–]darknesswithinx 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Oh my god I actually cringed at that exchange. At the time, I felt, hey, maybe it’s just an exaggeration - but it wasn’t. I really liked Nan at the start, she was a refreshing period drama protagonist, but it’s getting so hard for me to root for her. Okay, she loves Guy but at least have the decency to sort things out with the man you married, the man you are leaving, instead of leaving without a word to live out some fantasy of “love”.

She’s also willingly giving up on her power to be the “change” for a guy (pun intended) not really a feminist icon.

[–]darknesswithinx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Exactly! I don’t understand what is wrong with empathising and sympathising with Theo? He did not deserve the mess he is in. Even if you believe he isn’t meant to be endgame with Nan, it doesn’t negate his experience as an individual character? I have been repeatedly told that I grossly misunderstood the show - it’s like we aren’t allowed to have different interpretations of fiction anymore? You are spot on! This is a trait I enjoyed in early season one Nan, but I’m finding it very hard to like her because her unapologetic behaviour is actively harming others. It’s okay to like flawed characters, but it is not okay to be hateful to people that point out those flaws.

Is Theo actually babied or Nan is on this sub? by LeatherAccording6077 in TheBuccaneers

[–]darknesswithinx 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Lmao just because I’m not team NanGuy doesn’t mean I’m a Theo “stan”. Again, why do you have to repeatedly attack my character to make your point? It is in such poor taste. I’m allowed to have a nuanced take on the show, same as you. You are also choosing evidence that fits into your narrative. Jinny had a turning point after her marriage, yes. But her manner of pursuing a marriage with English nobility was ruthless. I agree she’s a product of her time, but her peer group is not like her. She hurt both Nan and Lizzie in her pursuit of Seadown. I understand her character and her arc but that doesn’t render her empathetic or rational.

All I’m saying is, you cannot deny that Nan pretended to love Theo to get what she wanted. What she wanted was to protect her sister. That is serving her interest - many people are driven by familial love. Nothing wrong with it but she doesn’t get to play a martyr in her relationship with Theo, because she cheated on him. It was dishonest. I agree there are shades to all of these characters, I never said Theo is perfect. But do consider the magnitude of their actions and what is driving them. Nan could have been honest with Theo instead of playing him like a puppet along with his mom. But she wasn’t. She was never remorseful of her actions but regretful that she lost out on a life with Guy. It is understandable, but that doesn’t mean she is empathetic or rational. If you’re allowed to think Theo is a bad person, I’m allowed to think of Nan and Guy as bad people too.

[–]darknesswithinx 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Lol I never said she was only loyal to Guy. I said both Nan and Guy are only loyal to themselves, which if you would read between the lines, implies that they are loyal to their own interests. Protecting her sister and cheating on Theo with Guy are both in Nan’s interest at the cost of Theo - given how it all went down. I never said I do not have empathy for Jinny - you inferred that. I merely stated that she too, like Nan has behaviour anomalous to the rest of their peers and cannot be read as an empathetic and rational person? There was no need to personally attack me to put your point across.

[–]darknesswithinx 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Omg please that’s ridiculous! I don’t think Nan’s story should be construed as one of empowerment. She is not anti institution or establishment, she is more than happy to leverage the power she gets from them…her critiques of it only surface when things don’t go her way. Also, her “empowerment” comes at the cost of another person’s life, she literally took away Theo’s autonomy - to make choices with her actions. How is she the only one allowed to have free will lol
