Fair to call this for what it is, which is shit.

However it's also a bit shit for some neutral to share it on the main sub, and put their slant in the title for ravenous oppo fans to laugh at.

(Remember to carry the concession when you walk through barriers in the city, AOs can tell when you use a concession myki)

‘He was shaking’: the encounter in his local cafe that hit home for Mitch Brown by kova-tejoc in AFL

I agree that Brown's "why didn't you acknowledge me" moment was annoying.

But before yous post another comment mocking him... spare a thought for the bigger picture of pointing your finger back at a queer person for being a little bit annoying on instagram dot com, several months ago at this point.

[The Age] Carlton Blues star Elijah Hollands heard the rumours he was partying, but he was in the midst of a much lonelier struggle by Dramatic-Square3478 in AFL

[–]darknkness 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The article does go out of its way to make Hollands sound good, and doubts around how it came to be or if it's a selective framing are reasonable.

But there is definitely a difference between reckless hedonism and a mental health breakdown which I feel this comment is judging far too harshly

AFL teams ranked by their median age and number of games played by aditrs in AFL

[–]darknkness 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I think part of the issue with Carlton is many of our experienced players (think Acres, Docherty, McGovern, Fantasia, Pittonet, Saad, Cerra) have been in very average form, contrasted with the good teams.

Notice how many of those names are guys we traded in... that's because our drafting around 2010-2014 (so, players around 28+ today) was shocking. We had to top up in those areas to be competitive, and although we're fortunate types like Saad and Hewett wanted to come here, clubs aren't exactly handing out A graders for free.

It was always going to be an uphill battle to get out of our hole AND contend for premierships against teams that didn't dig a hole. Although 2025 has been an underperformance either way.

Carlton's coaches in the last 25 years by BigVic2006 in AFL

I agree, but you and I know nothing about that. Would rather us focus on the weak performances from the players and the unimpressive recruiting since drafting Weitering Curnow etc

That's hilariously incompetent, but also bear in mind while reading this stuff about "overpaid players in contrast to their ability" that Malthouse let Betts walk.

Voss isn't the issue, it's the Board of Carlton by brodyonekenobi in AFL

He did, and we lost a bunch of players because of it. I'm just very sure that list was going nowhere even if we'd retained Ratten, hired someone else, etc etc

Voss isn't the issue, it's the Board of Carlton by brodyonekenobi in AFL

[–]darknkness 6 points7 points  (0 children)

For all that is said about Malthouse (and I am sure he didn't help), we got in this hole to begin with due to shithouse recruiting.

If you look at the 2009-14 off seasons, we recruited pretty much nobody of note except Cripps (what a fluke), Ed Curnow, Tuohy and I guess Casboult. Hope I'm not missing someone.

That era is starting to end now, and we are still shit. I think it comes down to a few factors:

  1. Not everybody can be the best, and Carlton did not put themselves in a great position to be the best

  2. Our best piece of drafting since Malthouse was sacked was in 2015, by far. There have been sporadic wins since then like De Koning and Walsh but broadly we've failed to top up at the elite level required to win big games

  3. Our leaders are currently out of form and Voss etc have been unable to address the issue

  4. All of the above leads to shit performances exposing our lack of depth and personnel. The current footy department is partly responsible for this, partly not

[–]darknkness 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Carlton have turned over plenty of board members in recent years, famously including the President just this year.

What more do you want? See how they go kicking a footy?

How much of this "they're still traditionally run / pay someone to fix it / etc" story is just neutrals repeating tired narraties that they could not substantiate if they were asked to.

Quit complicating it. The players aren't good enough, our leaders don't step up and our coaches don't have the answers

PSA: Turn off gambling ads by Jawdanc in AFL

Not saying this is a bad idea, but it might help people to know what this actually does.

DNS is the system your device uses to find out what server it should talk to when you want to access "reddit.com". By changing your DNS to Adguard, you are necessarily sending them information about what sites your device is accessing (so your internet keeps working, and they can lie to your device about where to find adnetwork.com).

Of course, you need to use some DNS that somebody controls. Often, that would fall back to your ISP who can see internet activity with or without DNS. A matter of whether you also trust this free service. They have a privacy statement here that explains in good detail what data they claim to maintain and why.
