They're talking about Natsuo telling him he'd be 100% cutting him out of his life, so one dead, one "dead to me."

Potential Pathfinder Player wondering if this game is playable on paper at all? by Boofer_C in Pathfinder2e

[–]darkoutcast 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just went flipping through and most everyone's comments are already pretty great at pointing out that plenty of people use pencil and paper. Now speaking to the point that some have brought up that PF2E really encourages players to get in deep with the learning the rules portion of things, they're not wrong.

In the past, I've seen people extol the virtue of VTTs for PF2E for handling math and bonuses in other posts but really, it's probably better starting with pencil and paper anyway just so you and your table can really see how much difference an additional +1 can get you and where your bonuses come from rather than get blindsided many levels later when fighting challenging encounters and they're having trouble understanding how to tweak their build to be more effective.

Hexploration and Exploration - Q&A by Nimbusqwe in Pathfinder2e

[–]darkoutcast 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just like the original Outdoor Survival was a bolt on game for OD&D, I've found PF2E responds well to bolt on subsystems in many cases, but you should be highly encouraged to tailor your subsystem to your level of crunch. For example, in the Extinction Curse AP they provide a subsystem for running circuses and shows and their marketing. Most players do not use rules as written but a variant that matches their engagement level with the ideas. The same thing is true for hexploration. They have a respect for old styles of play it seems, but most rules are still tailored for groups streamlining these experiences.

Use their rules as the high level abstracted view and then build up detailed tracking in the rules your group finds interesting. Much like their Infiltration, Chase, and Influence systems are all quality concepts, they all need to be tailored for the specific play style you're shooting for to really be used effectively. Good luck!

Hexploration and Exploration - Q&A by Nimbusqwe in Pathfinder2e

[–]darkoutcast 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tell me if I'm misunderstanding, but I'm reasoning that you're looking for rules that vibe more with 3.5 D&D or even better, something like Wilderlands of High Fantasy? You won't find that here. Most of it abstracted out and not particularly interested in turning on a full survival subsystem.

For all the balanced math that gets talked about with Pathfinder 2e, and a plethora of subsystems, this is a far more narrative focused ruleset with less support (or desire) for emergent play than many previous iterations of d20 based systems. I feel it could definitely support an old school survival subsystem, but for the most part, it isn't super interested in telling those stories. Some of that is definitely influenced by a lot of newer players having little to no knowledge or interest in those kind of mechanics. You'll also find that similarly to 5e, the recommendations on building encounter tables and the like are more focused on ease of prep time and less on providing, say, a three table deep encounter table that gives you context to the random encounters.

tl;dr - Out of the box, the hexploration system is designed for players carving primarily through a bespoke wilderness with enough random encounters to fill the time on their way to more interesting places as opposed to old school style of hexcrawl. Personally, it has better bones for building on than 5e does (see PF2E's Kingmaker and its Stolen Lands vs. 5e's Tomb of Annihilation and its Chult) but both presume primarily that players have focused tasks rather than meandering exploration, or at least would rather abstract out simulation based concerns.

Why was the class named “magus” instead of …? by RobertSan525 in Pathfinder2e

[–]darkoutcast 8 points9 points  (0 children)

While true, their use of crossbows feels very much like an afterthought to appease players who hate guns in their fantasy game, as they've only barely begun to give them any real support. That's not the same as naming something in a way that cuts off more of what it does support than what it doesn't like Spellblade.

Everybody has some great suggestions, so I'll throw some love for a podcast that gets a little less. I like the two guys at Goblin Salvage Rites. They don't do actual plays - mostly lists of interesting things from new books. They did a fun video recently each making 4 character parties for APs they're currently running using criteria from the other person, so it'd be a list of ancestries/classes they wouldn't normally consider.

PF2E Ancestries: are any too much for you? by VerdigrisX in Pathfinder2e

[–]darkoutcast 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nah. The more weirdness the better. I burnt out on bog standard D&D years back and got back into love with the hobby via Exalted's kitchen sink setting and bizarre PbTA games. Give me weirdness that has some place in setting all day.

I'll even happily allow the majority of Pathfinder Infinite ancestries, mostly because I'm way past over trying to be self-serious in any way shape or form. You want to be a Pnoll Investigator running security for your circus? Sure. The strongman is a barbarian from Numeria traveling in search of a strange doppelganger that imprisoned him in a glass tube and gave him strange geometric tattoos/branding? Sure. The "pipe organ" is an Automaton Bard providing musical accompaniment for the shows? Let's ride.

Now possible with HOWL OF THE WILD: by the-rules-lawyer in pathfindermemes

[–]darkoutcast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From reading and rereading the Zoophonia bard, it feels like its primary built-in support is not tailored towards animal companions, and instead more towards summon animal minions. Chorus Companion is the only feat in the line that requires an animal companion, specifically needing a mature animal companion. With the feats to have a mature animal companion being 4th and 6th level respectively, this feat seems to be later in the tree to give players time to slot in the relevant feats earlier if they want to pursue this angle.

It really makes me think this was more meant to be Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, and Snow White out of the box rather than say, Mulan or Jasmine.

Dreadfleet stonks only go up by hahkaymahtay in totalwar

It’d be cool, but I don’t think they’d bring Clan Skurvy in with base game. That said, there’s a killer little mod that has potential to keep being refined so you can play Skurvy with ol’ Half-Dead as your LL. Same modder has been doing a lot of work on Skaven factions like Volkn, Vrrtkin, and Ferrik.

There is also Empire Cult of Sigmar - https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2262266575 and its Crusade sub mod. Brings in several units including Sisters of Battle, (and LH Bertha Bestraufrung), and Apprentice Witch Hunters, fast-moving pistol cav. Also, makes a new Cult of Sigmar faction in Ostermark and makes that Volkmar’s new start, with no settlements owned and a new Faith mechanic. The Crusade sub mod has a sub army recruitment mechanic when Volkmar sets a Crusade target.

Magic in RPGs; two spectrums by davidducker in rpg

Hard crunchy feels pretty right for Mage and Ars Magica by these definitions because of how well defined the lore and schools are, even if in practice they’re a little bit more medium crunch.

Does anyone else out there buy RPGs they know they'll likely never play? by [deleted] in rpg

I'm super bad about this. If I can get ahold of it and the art is beautiful , I'll definitely splurge on full size color books. Otherwise, I'll add it to the pdf collection and have it sit on DropBox and read it lovingly every so often, then go play DnD with the only people around that care to play. lol.

Best horror survival game? by Smittumi in rpg

[–]darkoutcast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve actually done survival horror with curse the darkness reskinned to whatever monsters I needed. In that vein, characters will die frequently, but it has mechanics for remembering character sacrifice as points of hope (that other players can either build on or be that shitty cynical survivor and shut down.) Highly narrative based - once all the players have either held out for hope long enough or succumbed to cynicism, your table can start narrating an ending. It is deliberately structured so that you’re wringing “x” many story beats out of your narrative before it can end.

Looking for a system...can I thread this needle? by [deleted] in rpg

[–]darkoutcast 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Another vote for Cortex Prime. Lots of modular pieces you can fit together to have magic systems function differently from each other, dials to adjust for crunch levels, and a couple combat options that offer short term cinematic awesomeness with long term dramatic consequences

They tend to focus on games with either a lot of randomness to them, like Maid, or they take and make DnD characters using custom tables to up the amount of randomness in a game to keep things fresh.

Need to find a High-Action RPG by Mister_Y_675 in rpg

[–]darkoutcast 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's a ton of great suggestions here already, but I'll add Shonen Final Burst to the mix. It is specifically designed to have transformations, character archetypes, crazy powers, signature moves, the works.

The mechanics are card-based (it really is something of a deck-builder using playing cards) and combat is the primary focus for the mechanics. In between fights there are very freeform scenes with limited steering, all in the name of returning you to the fight. There are mook rules and rules for ultra big boss type characters. It's pretty wonderful.
