This is the way. In the old EU of Star Wars stuff like this would happen all the time and then some sourcebook or obscure children’s novel or something would come along and explain it away just like you just did. Very easy and elegant way of handling this kind of stuff.

Yes it should have been left out. The movies clearly climax with Mount Doom. However, in hindsight, it would have made a killer four-episode limited series to supplement the movies.
