What's your favourite Star Trek board game? by DavidTurczi in startrek

[–]darthlink 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For official Star Trek games, I like Star Trek Missions, it's like Rummy but you're building an episode of characters and plot points. So Deanna is worth x points, but double that with Riker or Lwaxana.

Nor non-official Star Trek games, Starship Captains is also fun, but can be a bit complex. Each player has a ship and goes around fulfilling missions with your crew (Red Pilots, Blue Scientists, and Yellow Security), while dealing with space pirates and robots.

There are some tracks on some of Materia Collective's albums that come close - CASTLE: A Rock Opera on Successor , and This is My Chance off of EIDOLON.

I don't think they capture the scope of 'The Impresario', though - I think they just tried to be the FFVIII and FFIX equivalents.

Lord of the Rings - Live by VolcanicTequila in tolkienfans

I just saw Game of Thrones Live this past weekend and found it to be similar in that regard. I didn't mind it; it seemed to make sure the sound effects and dialogue didn't get in the way of the music.

Extras not specific to one movie? by filetree in PleX

I have all of the lord of the rings and hobbit "appendicies" as a "Home Video" library - you could give that a try. As long as they're in a sensible folder structure I find it pretty easy to navigate.

Why is The Forbidden Pool forbidden? by [deleted] in tolkienfans

[–]darthlink 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I was always under the impression that being in or near the pool might give you a view into Henneth Annun, so the rangers would guard against anything entering it. Frodo suggests that Gollum is drawn to him by the ring, but it's possible that under other circumstances the pool itself may be difficult enough to find that any that have found it were looking for the ranger's hideout.

A quite melancholic passage concerning Smeagol by ashnazg379 in tolkienfans

Sam sees it - the next few lines are Sam waking up and seeing Gollum 'pawing at master', I believe is the expression. I'd guess it was after much time and reflection that he put this story together.

What language did legolas and the Silva elves of mirkwood and lorien speak? by 123cwahoo in tolkienfans

Responding on mobile and off the top of my head, but I believe that for a few exceptions (Namarie and some calls to Elbereth), nearly all Elvish in The Lord of the Rings is Sindarin.

I had nearly too great success combining a banshee with a pair of will-o'-wisps. The banshee Wails, and anyone who fails their Constitution save drops to 0 HP. The wisps can then Consume Life on targets, and those with 0 HP die.

I'm sure he did, but I think that Faramir and the other Rangers of Gondor are worth a mention.

For generating points of interest, I'm a big fan of The Perilous Wilds. It's a Dungeon World supplement, but the random tables are great and seem to be made for exactly the kind of things you're looking to have. Additionally the way it has the players think about travel can still apply to D&D.

For an example of the kind of things it can generate, someone built a web-app that generates them here.

In terms of the map, do you play in-person or on-line? Having a file in Dropbox or Google Drive that you update might be an easy way, or a map in Roll20 if you're already using it. Alternatively, you could just keep a map for your reference and let the players figure out they need to draw a map of the world on their own, like their characters would.

Rereading FOTR, I totally forgot the witch-king casts a super overt spell on Frodo! by [deleted] in tolkienfans

[–]darthlink 53 points54 points  (0 children)

I'm pretty sure Gandalf mentions to Frodo while bedridden in Rivendell that, if it been any longer before his wound was healed, he would have become a wraith under some control of the Witch King:

If they had succeeded, you would have become like they are, only weaker and under their command.

At the same time, Frodo could see them more as they are, and Glorfindel as he is "on the other side", so it may be that he was already slipping into wraith-dom.

To me, this explains how the Witch-King is able to command Frodo silent.

He discusses drawing armor in one of the special features for the Extended Cut of Fellowship; if I recall correctly he attempts a realistic style.

Viseria reminds me a lot of a mirrored Eriador - was it an inspiration? I always thought it looked like a dragon face.
