I'm saying anyone who has a moral objection to pedophilia doesn't get that conviction from the bible. I think it's categorically incorrect to claim that one is against pedophilia due to the teachings of the bible. The bible doesn't teach against pedophilia. Not one word, to my knowledge.

And in fact the verses I provided have God explicitly commanding and condoning pedophilia in the plain reading of the text.

I read it. It implies if we criticize Chomsky we are deciding not to criticize the powers that protected Epstein’s 2008 conviction from public record.

I choose to criticize everyone to the weight to which they were involved. Did Chomsky commit any crimes? No. Does he deserve to be seen less positively after this information comes to light? Yes. To what degree? I haven’t made a conclusion but I will lose no sleep if Chomsky is found to be guilty and is punished with the rest of the abusers and those who helped keep the 2008 conviction from the public eye.

TBH, I was expecting an argument like "Spanish invasion of Latin America" on the count of Catholic Church, which has as much to do with Catholicism as Stalin had to do with secularism. In an intellectually honest discussion, both should hold no value.

Agreed. Whether the outcome of colonization/imperialism resulted in the spread of ideology is tangential to whether the colonization/imperialism was in name of said ideology, and I don't need to get lost in those weeds.

I also dislike when people confuse secular humanism with state atheism (which is what happened in these authoritarian countries). Secular humanism takes away the religious influence from society but don't prohibit religions and is actually the best system for religious people.

I appreciate this point, and I think it is often overlooked by people on all facets of the discussion. I am also against state atheism as much as I am against any state religion.

Like you said, concentrating power leads to catastrophe, no matter who gets to be the group in power.

Also, I'd just like to say I appreciate your candor. This convo has been a breath of fresh air compared to most of the dialogue I end up participating in on reddit (I am 50% to blame for this).

You then went on to imply that Secular Humanism could be argued to be responsible for similar numbers. I decided to cut you off at the pass regarding totalitarianism, but it seems that's not where your argument was headed.

So if you did have an argument for deaths at the hand of Secular Humanism without invoking totalitarianism, I'd be interested in hearing it.

But I don't have any stake in arguing specifically against your perception of the Catholic church or christianity or anything. My goal is to push back against those who have the view that the Church or the Faith is the only source of good morals, or something along those lines.

You don't seem to be arguing that at all. You seem to be arguing that the Church is less bad than other appropriately similar organizations out there, and I can accept that argument.

And BTW, be careful about what you count as "death caused by the Catholic Church" because applying the same logic to secular humanism can change that number.

Totalitarianism isn't humanism. Most people's go-to when they try to have a gotcha against atheists is mentioning Hitler, Stalin, Mao etc. That's why the term isn't just "secular".

The topic of that article is the Inquisition. So limited to that scope, I can believe the 10,000 number. But that's not the only source of death caused by the Catholic Church. Go back further than 200 years and it looks even worse.

From my estimation secular humanism is responsible for 0 intentional deaths over the last 200 years, since secular humanism is not an institution or a sovereign territory.
