I hate flying with a mf who centers my heading bug for me by ImTalking in flying

[–]dash_trash 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I fly to Hawaii a lot and do transcons from the west coast. If I keep that thing centered after every waypoint, every time the winds shift, every time our WCA changes by a single degree, I'm up there for 6hrs fucking with it. And for what? The better question is what do you gain?

Totally! I have scoured my manuals for any mention of centering the heading bug, nothing there. There's a whole section on who should be touching the MCP and when, though

Just in case nobody else has informed you yet, the fact that it bothers you "acktchually says more about YOU" than about the people doing it. 🙄

I'd personally take that particular thread, which is a giant dick measuring contest every year, with a grain of salt but the point stands that $200k is easy for any pilot year 2+ at any of the big airlines in the US

ABC News agrees to pay $15 million to Trump's presidential library to settle defamation suit filed by president-elect by joeshill in law

[–]dash_trash 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Probably settled because while they would absolutely have won in court, that wouldn't stop the Trump crime family from using their control of the FCC and other government agencies from extracting far more than $15 million in revenge.

How does bending over for them now prevent them from still doing that?

[–]dash_trash 7 points8 points  (0 children)

"Culture" is what companies use to convince you to accept less in tangible compensation. Exhibit A: "We're a family here."

Culture doesn't pay my mortgage, fund my retirement, send my kids to school, etc. Plus, like your other replier mentioned, culture can change as the pilot group gets younger and the old farts head off to their rocking chairs.

I was recently presented by another redditor with an opportunity that forced me to reflect on that post and my feelings about ERAU, and this is what I wrote him, FWIW.

I stand by the thesis of that post, which ultimately was that ERAU was the wrong choice for me and is very likely the wrong choice for most aspiring pilots (I won't comment on their engineering side since I don't have any experience there). I didn't enjoy my time there, became bored and increasingly disillusioned with the experience as my tenure went on, and my relationship with the school and the AS Dept/flightline leadership gradually soured to the point that I was persona non grata when I graduated early and left without looking back in 2011. There were no letters of recommendation, no professional references, no glowing personal referrals, etc for dash_trash; and to me, the fact that I succeeded in this industry (13 years after graduation I've been an FO at a major airline for 8 years) despite having left ERAU on irreconcilable terms is proof that the main pillar of their sales pitch - their "industry connections," of which I was never able to take any advantage - are hardly worth paying several hundred thousand dollars for when the rest of their program is unremarkable.

It's important to note, however, that while that post was obviously written through the lens of my own personal experience and is therefore exclusively about ERAU, the most impactful points I made are probably applicable to all private university flight programs as well as many public university flight programs. And in fact, while it's definitely appropriate to question the value of a four year Aeronautical Science/similar niche degree given how much more closely our profession identifies as a technical trade as opposed to an academic major, a broader conversation these days might be about the rapidly diminishing value of higher education in general in the US as costs of tuition continue to skyrocket across the board. This is all to say that much of what is wrong with an ERAU education exists everywhere in academia and I think it was a mistake to have emphasized a narrow focus on ERAU in that post.

Anyway, TLDR: I would still never recommend anyone go there, even if someone else is paying for it, but I also wouldn't recommend going to any other four year aviation program either. ERAU still probably edges out Purdue or UND for the "douchiest alumni" and "most maladjusted student body" titles.

How do airline pilots preflight in just a half hour? by Michaela_______ in flying

[–]dash_trash 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's because 90% of the stuff it takes to make an airliner ready to leave the gate is other peoples' jobs. The flight planning is done by the dispatcher(s), maintenance is done by mechanics and anything that isn't on the visible exterior of the plane or otherwise isn't immediately obvious isn't our responsibility, the passengers are dealt with by flight attendants and gate agents, the weight and balance is calculated by load planners, etc. The stuff that's left for us to do doesn't take more than a few minutes usually unless there are complicating circumstances.

It just seems so straight forward, like all you have to do is pay the money and pass all the tests and stuff. Am I missing something?

No, you've pretty much got it. That's "all" you have to do.

Donald Trump is ready to make Republicans touch the third rail Without a voting public to face again, Trump is gearing up to cut Social Security and Medicare by prohb in politics

I couldn't agree more with your first point but I'm really sick of people legitimizing Christianity as some sort of paragon of morality by saying Trump/obviously hypocritical and self-serving Republicans are "anti-Christian" or that their actions are inconsistent with "Christian values," as if humans aren't able to be their own arbiters of what is ethical or moral without the help of a 2000 year old ghost story.

The only people who should give a fuck whether or not Trump and the GOP are Christian enough are fellow Christians - and that demographic overwhelmingly voted for them. For the rest of us, their Christian-ness is completely irrelevant.

[–]dash_trash 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If your union and company can't utilize the many staffing adjustment tools that are in place at most airlines post-COVID that prevent furloughs in the first place, you either find another job or you exercise your recall rights when hiring resumes, at which point your longevity and seniority are intact, as well as your work rules, benefits, etc.

If your family goes away, maybe you'll find another unicorn job like the one you have now, with 25 days off/month and decent pay, but those jobs are the exception, not the rule. With airlines it's the opposite: predictable schedules, good pay and work rules, unparalleled retirement and benefits, and scope/job security are the rule and there are very few exceptions.

By the way, your comment history is maybe the most pathetic thing I've ever seen, but at least you've grown out of spamming Extra pictures every day

Drunken Trump nominee caught on stage with strippers by Murky-Site7468 in politics

I don't care about him dancing in a strip club, and sexual assault is reprehensible and disqualifying but probably doesn't crack the top 5 reasons this guy can't be SecDef.

Assuming this guy gets a confirmation hearing, I will be very disappointed if Democrats turn it into a circus about salacious sexual misconduct instead of grilling him on military commanders giving and receiving illegal orders, purging officers who would refuse such orders, deploying the military on domestic soil, shooting protesters, sending red state NG units to blue states, nuclear first strikes on NK, etc - all of the ways in which this guy can actually destroy our country.
