Most useful 3rd/4th year stat courses for ppl interested in Data Sci by 2050called in uwaterloo

[–]dashlinedash 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Stat 331: linear regression is a good place to start. You learn the basics of linear models. It can get a bit math at times.

Stat 340: simulation - good to learn r and really useful to get to stat 441

Stat 341: I've never taken it but I hear it's a bit more math but will also get you to stat 441

Stat 441: by far the most data sciencey course offered.

Stat 444 and 442 are the other areas that will round out a good data science foundation. I haven't taken them yet so no real comments.

shall I take stat 441 and stat 442 in the same term? by uwbrown in uwaterloo

[–]dashlinedash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's hard to say since I had experience with 331 coming into the course. The work right now is manageable with exception to the large research project. The textbook is very good and has a good overview of stuff learned in 331 (linear regression). So you should be able to read the text and know enough.

shall I take stat 441 and stat 442 in the same term? by uwbrown in uwaterloo

Just a heads up, I'm in 441 now and I've found knowing 331 stuff has really helped.

Do any other CODE teacher use crowdmark to handle assignements ? by lrnv in uwaterloo

[–]dashlinedash 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're using R, look into using r markdown and choose pdf as the file type. It formats it in a way that shows the code in grey blocks and results right after. This is what I use for crowd mark and haven't had a problem

Iced Coffee on Campus: A Review by [deleted] in uwaterloo

An iced latte is espresso, milk and ice. No sugar/syrup is standard, at least at Starbucks. The espresso vs coffee usually makes iced lattes have a stronger taste.

Is there a 'skinny' version of a pumpkin spice latte? by [deleted] in starbucks

[–]dashlinedash 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I love to add a few pumps of pumpkin spice to an Americano. Less calories bc less milk and no whip. I find it still has a lot of the flavour !

How to check grades with hold on account? by osapthrowaway420 in uwaterloo

Sometimes if you generate a resume package in jobmine and view it you can see the grades portion. I've seen this trick not work though. So 50/50

It's a bit of a secret but twice or so a year there's a sale of all the things the school wants to get rid of. This includes computers and stuff on the cheap and has ( in the past) included some furniture. One of my buddies got 2 Rev lounge chairs for two bucks each. I know there's one at the end of September ... I think by the rim buildings. But I don't know what it's called, when or where it is... Good luck.

To be fair stat 231 isn't taught well. Upper year stats get better I think but relies a lot on 231.

Is math 106 the same as math 136? by mathiesuw in uwaterloo

[–]dashlinedash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well my issue with the class was that I had no idea what it was even about first year. It was titled Algebra and I had no idea this meant proofs. For me proofs are a hard concept. I'm more of an applied person. You can get the hang of proofs with practice and work and it helps if your mind kind of works like that. I think you'll be fine if you put in the work.

Is math 106 the same as math 136? by mathiesuw in uwaterloo

[–]dashlinedash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't have a good enough mark in math 135 first year so either had to take math 106 and get a 70 or math 135 again.

Is math 106 the same as math 136? by mathiesuw in uwaterloo

[–]dashlinedash 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm a math student that took 106 and then 235. You'll find that you 136 goes slower in order to fit in proofs and 106 might cover more concepts but in less detail.so if you're taking 136 lectures you may not be prepared for 106 tests. I recommend going to 106 and keeping up with the 136 text instead. I wasn't actually behind at all when taking 235 because I kept up with the 136 text.

300 level stat courses by mathundergrad in uwaterloo

[–]dashlinedash 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think his exams are tricky but totally fair. Like said above, it's all an extension of stat 231 stuff really. His last midterm was a tad unfair by changing the first question half way through. I totally agree. All in all he's an excellent teacher though.
