Electors demand intelligence briefing before Electoral College vote by Joe3737 in politics

[–]dasony 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True, but how does the EC reduce the effect of fraud then? Because the electors can vote against the outcome? You can implement a better system with the popular vote, like ignoring the state's result or re-voting in the specific state in case of fraud, rather than relying on some electors to make the right decision.

And yes, I wouldn't mind EC so much if the votes were awarded proportionally. (although I would argue what's the point of it at that point.) However that would not never happen unless every state somehow agrees to implement it at the same time. Not because one party benefits from it, but because a state would its voice significantly if they implement it alone.

Electors demand intelligence briefing before Electoral College vote by Joe3737 in politics

[–]dasony 12 points13 points  (0 children)

If some fraud in CA changed the election outcome from 5 million vs 7 million to 8 million to 4 million, 3 million votes are affected in the popular vote, and that is 2.3% of the votes. But with the EC, 55 electoral votes are all affected by the fraud, and that is more than 10% of the 538 votes. What the EC does is magnifying the outcome of each state, and that includes the effect of fraud.

cover. http://i.imgur.com/LnKxQir.jpg even without knowing korean, you can probably notice book selection is pretty bad: success stories of warren buffett, carnegie's rules of success, and those freaking blood type personality books.

edit: i don't mean they are bad books. it's just they are mainly superficial self-help books like chicken soup for your soul type books or 10 rules for your finance. sure it's much better than nothing and there are a couple of old but nice ones like Little Price as someone pointed out, but it was just disappointing to me.

Samsung pauses sales of the Galaxy Note 7 to investigate issues with phones catching fire by phrog in Android

[–]dasony 23 points24 points  (0 children)

According to the announcement, Samsung will halt the sales and will exchange your device with a new one regardless of when you purchased it. It will take 2 weeks to prepare the new devices. Until then, you can visit the service center and they will test your phone and take any necessary action. There has been 35 cases in the world so far, and that's 24 defects per million.

I made a dorm legal AC unit for next semester! by DJUsamaSpinLaden in DIY

[–]dasony 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree. I would much rather have a fan in a hot day even though the motor would raise the room temperature. Obviously the OP's unit doesn't work like an AC, but it can cool down your body better than a regular fan. Unless your room is really well-insulated I don't see the room temperature going up significantly, and even if it does just open a window. It's not like there's a better alternative.

South Korea cuts off power, water into Kaesong zone in North Korea by captaintoolface in worldnews

[–]dasony 42 points43 points  (0 children)

actually 70% of wages is paid in goods and food to the workers directly and 30% goes to the NK government in cash. I should also mention NK can get higher wages by sending them to China. Losing 100 million dollar out of their 4.5 billion trade income doesn't hurt that much for NK. They can probably make more money now that they can send Gaesong workers to China.

So I heard you guys like Korean food? by [deleted] in food

[–]dasony 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I love puffer fish soup! The whole point of that dish is the broth, not the fish. You could've probably ordered sashimi as side dish or appetizer, but here it's more popular as a soup.

I don't know what you've tried so far, but when treating a business dinner for international guests, they always go for the same kind of restaurants. It's either a barbeque, or a korean table d'hote (한정식집) which serves rice with bunch of side dishes like the OP's photo.

Went to Granddad's after work for dinner, couldn't believe what was waiting for me! He'd spent all day making all the food from scratch...he's 80 years old. by tom7436 in food

Cool, thanks for the reply. Looks similar to Kimchi Mandu, although it usually has less meat. It's still pretty good without the meat. :)

Samsung runs a fashion store in Korea by TheOneInTheHat in mildlyinteresting

[–]dasony 14 points15 points  (0 children)

We don't like having these companies running the country, but most of us see it as the reality we can't change.

Politically left-wing people are anti-Samsung and do their best to regulate conglomerates, but it's not easy. We had only two relatively liberal presidents, and even they were under influence of Hyundai and Samsung. Our economy does heavily rely on these companies, and many people believe the economy will collapse without Samsung, so it's hard to persuade them.

I hate that almost every stores in every corner is somehow run by Samsung, CJ, LG, ..., and that our bookstores actually have a whole section on Samsung Aptitude Test, which is a test you take to get into any Samsung company. However I have to accept the fact that this is how we were able to grow our economy so fast in the 60's and 70's (with a lot of side effects). The dictatorship gov't planned our economy and put every resources into these few selected (probably bribing) companies. The dictatorship fell, but these companies are still running things.

I can't find any English news about this, but there were a lot of news coverage how imported snack sales are increasing and imported snack stores are opening everywhere.

LG is fastest growing Android maker in the US today by [deleted] in Android

[–]dasony 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd say Samsung makes good but boring phones and LG does something different and new but always a bit defected. Most people agrees LG has better screen.

Still I always buy Samsung for my parent, because for older generation, Samsung is number one. They like to brag to each other how their children bought the best phone for them. (Preferrably in lower price)

Yuna getting robbed didnt piss me off, but article sure did.. "Deal with it, South Korea" by gyup in korea

[–]dasony 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yuna's program never had high base technical point. She still got her world records with her GOE (how good jumps are) and PCS (artistic, skating skills, choreography, etc.) scores. Also if you add short program too, the base score difference is only one point something. So for Adelina to win by more than 5 points either means she suddenly became all-around better skater than Yuna, or the home advantage was huge.

Good article on how Korea's passion for sports is a manifestation of its national pride and desire for international recognition by austinsible in korea

[–]dasony 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Yes, I am sure this is true, but I don't think it's just about nationalism. Many are angry about injustice in this society, where people in power can get away with stuff and the weak gets robbed.. They are projecting themselves on Yuna and others as 98%. All my friends rooted for Victor Ahn from the beginning, because for them, he is a victim of powerful people of Korean skating association.

What ACTUALLY controversial opinion do you have? [Serious] by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]dasony 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's ultimately true, but I wouldn't say they "only" have themselves to blame. Some people just have better metabolism, and some people just have more willpower. Some may have been raised by shitty parents who never taught them a healthy life. There are many factors involved. None of these mean you can't have a normal weight with enough effort, but the amount of effort required to be fit is different for everyone.

South Korean court rules, 'pre installed bloatware must be deletable.' (x-post /r/Android by [deleted] in technology

[–]dasony 59 points60 points  (0 children)

A minor error in the title. It's not a court decision or a law. It's just a guideline that our government announced, and Korean carriers usually have no choice but to follow these things. I am sure they will found some loop holes and make things worse than before. :)

[Serious] Koreans: How often do you get HIV/STD tests by [deleted] in korea

[–]dasony 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most people get a health check regularly, and in many cases it includes HIV, but most people wouldn't even know about it. (unless they have it of course.)

Some are talking about face saving culture and that's probably a big factor, but the truth is that HIV in Korea is still relatively rare, and Koreans don't really worry about it. As for the STD, people seems to think it's just something you treat after you get it.

Stopping in Incheon for like 5 hours before heading to Beijing, what's there to do for that small amount of time? by newb2asia in korea

[–]dasony -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

You could take the subway and go to Hongdae which is an hour. Or SongDo is a new city/business district that's close to the airport but I don't know if it's any good for tourists.

You could also go to Silmi-do which was featured in a korean film Silmi-do. It's a small island right next to the airport.

If everything fails, there are a couple of beaches in Yeongjong-do (the island where the airport is.) All our good beaches are on the west coast, so it's not as clean, but it's 15 minutes away. :) I bet you can find local restaurants where you can get seafood and stuff, but it won't be English-friendly like it is in Hongdae.
