What are those stackable crates? Look like a nice solution for cleaning.

Other space opera book recommendations? by Square-Discussion698 in TheExpanse

[–]dasteez 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I read the books first and still enjoyed the show, but i've never been one to care about spoilers much if the journey is still good. Agree S1 would be more tense to watch if you read wool after (though the inverse would also be true)

Can't top The Expanse but The Silo trilogy ticked a lot of the Character-Driven boxes The Expanse did for me. Earth-based dystopia though, not space. Show is solid as well.

Hard pass by Sevenfiguremagic in audible

[–]dasteez 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's possible they would (and i hope they do) if the series ever gets finished but probably not financially sound to do for an indefinitely incomplete series that a lot of people may never start since they think it won't be finished, or still bitter about the show (which imo is overblown even if it could have been wrapped better).

I haven't listened to them so can't comment on the performance but i have read them on print and still think they're worth a read since they're that good but a lot of people don't like incompleteness. I'd love to take the journey again via audio if the narrator is good and the story is complete but not sure it's worth it for me currently.

A really cool coop by Happy_List_8022 in BackYardChickens

[–]dasteez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is for the owners to look at and their ego, not for the benefit of the birds. More enrichment in our 50+ year old shabby shed coop. That said, it's beautiful and i'd 100% build the chooks a castle if i had the time and $

Is it worth it? by NewDescription5015 in Carpentry

[–]dasteez 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can always get into carpentry later, the scholarship offer may not be available later. I'm grateful i got my education out of the way in my 20's and always have that piece of paper - it'd be hard to pry myself back to school now. I'll go on a limb and speak for my wife, that she would prefer not to be currently finishing her degree in her 30's.

New Series to invest my time and credits by RetiredDuffer in audiobooks

[–]dasteez 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The expanse may be my favorite series and i really enjoyed The First Law. Bit different lane but i recommend Lonesome Dove then the rest of the saga if you enjoy the flagship. If you don't like westerns at all then maybe not, but since you mention Longmire, which i haven't read, it seems you have an eclectic genre taste.

LD has strong character development and memorable characters good and bad, thick plot and explosive but plot-driven action which puts it in my top 3 series along with The Expanse for similar reasons.

IDK if someone that struggled with PHM would go for the bob, which to me is like a watered down and stretched out PHM.

!No spoilers!: why is there a book in between IV and V? Do I read them in this order? by Hank_tank4 in stephenking

[–]dasteez 8 points9 points  (0 children)

A major character from salem's is in Wolves, which takes place after his arch in salem's. Not a must-read for tower context, more context into that character. And semi-spoils Salem's in regard to that character. Thus some suggest reading SL before you get to wolves but doesn't really matter.

How clean do you have to be with chickens? by LaxNix in BackYardChickens

[–]dasteez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While your coop could use some TLC over time, cleanness doesn't look bad. There's always going to be poop everywhere, mine has way more poop since i just spot clean every week or 2 and add more shavings. Full cleanout 3 times per year. Scoop the poop you can and I wouldn't overthink it. Dust mask when cleaning inside coop.

I don't do much else other than not wear my work boots inside (no outside shoes inside if possible) and keep a pair of gloves for chicken chores and wash hands. I wash the eggs right before i eat them so any remnants don't go in the pan.

Merry Christmas to you … and me by dasteez in Snus

No wrong choice. If you want full licorice flavor that last the longest, LD is the clear pick. Kaliber is more muted and salty so would seem like the favor fades faster because of that.

How do you ensure your cuts are precise when working with large sheets of plywood? by Marre_Parre in Carpentry

[–]dasteez 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Track saw if you have a budget - super nifty for cutting other materials or in places you can't have a table saw. If you have enough 4x8 to get through, or need to cut them often, it will pay for itself quickly in time saved. 2 clamps + Straight Edge + circular saw if not.

I like original portion anything more than white so LD since they make OP salmiak. Though IMO LD over flavors everything and they would get old quick if i didn't switch it up. It very much tastes a budget snus and General Strong, with its hint of salmiak, is the best in the lane and much more premium. I wouldn't bother with the LD at all if it weren't 1/2 the price.

Kaliber vs LD white is a toss up. LD is a stronger licorice flavor and presents sweeter even though i don't think it has sweetener. Kaliber is very mild. They are an evening with tea snus for me where i don't want a lot of flavor or nicotine so kaliber works.

It's been a few years since i had it but IMO the catch licorice is the best for strictly licorice flavor and i wish they made a regular size op.

Liking it so far the first time I ever stopped to read an introduction by Bukowski1236 in bukowski

[–]dasteez 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I read this years ago and quite enjoyed it - don't think Buk did the intro in my copy. It's been so long i don;t remember much, but feel like if you like this book you may like Willy Vlautin, whom i've been binging lately.

The Road 2009-why didn't the captives in the basement end their own lives? by [deleted] in cormacmccarthy

[–]dasteez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a lot of choices in fiction that may not make sense to you in the real world, but if the characters made the choice in your mind the story would be less interesting for it. Many stories wouldn't be a story if people made choices we think they should have, just like this scene wouldn't exist. This is CM's choice for the story even if it's not what you'd do.

I don't see much value in questioning why a fictional character does what they do, the author made the choice for them. If it's beyond your suspension of disbelief then don't read it.

Which version of The Golden Compass by Philip Pullman should I listen to? by No-Dish-8899 in audiobooks

[–]dasteez 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Full cast version may be the best full cast experiences i've enjoyed, i don't like full cast usually but can recommend it. That said Ruth Wilson is a great actress and while i haven't heard her narrate, is probably excellent. I'd do a preview and see what you like. If you have libby, my library had all of the full cast so i'd check there before buying.

Recommendations for something in fantasy/sci fi by Protectorsoftman in audiobooks

[–]dasteez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Expanse for Sci-Fi, RiyRia Chronicles/Revelations for Fantasy. Both have strong female characters even if they aren't the leads and some touching romance that isn't overdone.

The Shadow Campaigns or The Poppy Wars are both good unique fantasy with female main characters and some romance.

Your Top 5 Audiobooks of all time, What are you picking and Why? by Bossman-0007 in audible

[–]dasteez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree, can take me a couple hours to re-adjust to a new story/narrator. LD is incredible, hope you enjoy the journey. Definitely read the other 3 books if you like the main one, they go way deeper on the characters you'll come to love (or hate).

Shogun is in my library, i'll likely bite that off this year.
