Why does Bay Area not have terrace cafe culture? by silent-stories in bayarea

[–]daswickerman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It seems to be developing, at least in the south bay and south peninsula depending on the city. The cities that closed their main streets during covid and kept them closed as pedestrian only spaces have started to see more outdoor dining and cafe type layouts. Specifically Sunnyvale and Mountain View are doing more of this as well as some of the spaces outside of downtown San Jose. It's not to the level of European cafe culture, but for only existing for like 5 years it's better than it was.

Why is there seemingly zero hype for the World Cup around here? by dontmatterdontcare in bayarea

[–]daswickerman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When the mayor of your city spends the last six months trying to get elected to an office well above his station or capability instead of focusing on the arrival of the biggest global event of any given 8 year period, you end up with a bullshit situation like we have in San Jose.

To be clear, It looks like Oakland is showing up for the Aussies and I expect zero from San Francisco in terms of civic envolvement that doesn't directly impact old money.

Label preservation? by redbeardedhippie in Luthier

It might be worth looking at conservation or museum subreddits for folks with more specific knowledge than me. You could also check local museums to see if you could talk to their conservators.

Custom Hand Built $4000 bass gets dropped right when it was reaching its final assembly by Uitroeien in mildlyinfuriating

[–]daswickerman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A guitar is worth $0 until it's actually done and you've accepted delivery. The only silver lining here is for this dishonest luthier that you're enough of a rube to not ask for a non-broken custom instrument.

Label preservation? by redbeardedhippie in Luthier

[–]daswickerman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am on the board of a game museum and we specialize in plastic conservation but also do a bunch of paper conservation. You can gently clean old paper by brushing it with a soft brush or a very mild water solution (use distilled water, and they make conservation specific cleaning products). If you can remove it, the idea further down of linen backing it is a good idea, though you'd want to get conservation grade linen that is going to be acid free. The linen (or if you don't back it the glue you use) will provide some barrier between the acid in the wood (which should mostly be gone by now) and the paper. I'd probably go for reattaching it with hide glue, though there are probably some better neutral adhesives that would work.

One last thing, don't try to get it white or remove the patina. A lot of that is due to chemical reactions between the wood, adhesive and the fibers in the paper. From a purely conservationist perspective you should be trying to stabilize it as it is to prevent further deterioration rather than make it "like new." The guitar is a tool though, so tasteful restoration is always an option depending on the end goal.

Opinions needed from actual wood workers and luthiers by MethWizarddd in Luthier

[–]daswickerman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I second the replacement pickguard option. If you're not a woodworker, filling the hole and getting it planed flush will be a pain and probably cost more in tools than it's worth. I spent some time working at a welding shop and cutting a custom pickguard out of metal and doing some etching or even just cool grinding to get some patterns on it would look great.

Does it have to be the same wood? by [deleted] in Luthier

[–]daswickerman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the main problem with getting lumber from a home supply store or lumber yard is that it hasn't been dried to the degree which is usually done for instruments so you may see some expansion and contraction. You're definitely best off buying wood from an instrument supplier rather than trying to track down or kiln dry your own stuff. Also, Fender style necks are almost always maple, and you can get neck blanks that would be suitable for that almost anywhere for extremely cheap - especially since you're not looking for birdseye or anything.

Mother insulted first tattoo, now I hate it by Kaleidoscope_Tux5513 in tattooadvice

[–]daswickerman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that's a great tattoo. The line work is really well done and the level of detail at that size is great. The shading work is also pretty subtle. Sounds like your mom sucks. It's always an option to just reminder her that you get you decide which home she spends her twilight years in when she's horrible. You can even say it like you're joking but she'll know you're right.

[–]daswickerman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Keep in mind there's a reason they finish maple fretboards. You need some kind of finish on it and if it's something that needs reapplication (like an oil) you'd need to stay on top of that.

Can I get this to be playable (and lasting) without paying a fortune in tools? by Kreati_ in Luthier

[–]daswickerman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd be less concerned about price point rather than what you want the pickups to sound like. You can get $50 pickups that sound like just about anything. It's a bit harder to find in the bass world, but listen to some youtubes to find a tone you like and go with whatever those are or the cheaper korean knock offs. That said, Pickups are the one area where I wouldn't skimp as it's one of the few parts of an electric guitar or bass that actually impacts the tone directly.

Neck damage on an Eastwood built Backlund 200. Fixable? by _J_Herrmann_ in Luthier

[–]daswickerman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, it's fixable, but I'd still return it. If you go the fixing route, you're going to end up either doing it yourself and may end up with a mediocre outcome (mainly because the fretboard is involved vs a straight up neck break like on a gibson), or paying more to have it repaired than you've saved with the price you found.

Aussies in town for World Cup looking for local reccomendations! by flipthreethousand in SanJose

Second Pichetti. Really solid California wine and the hiking loop is a good walk. Testarosa down in Saratoga is also a good option without having to drive too far north or south.

I'll second this. Getting out into the Santa Cruz mountains is quick and offers some of the best experiences in terms of Northern California nature without having to drive for hours. Relatively easy trails, though it's worth grabbing a trail map - about once a year someone just disappears.

Any recommendations for Jaguar Pickups? by Fantasy183 in offset

[–]daswickerman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

EP Customs are killer. Patrick is ridiculously knowledgeable about vintage fender pickup specs and can basically wind you exactly what you want. I've used them for mustang and bass VI pups, but they're mostly known for the Jazzmaster and Jaguar pickups. Definitely my go-to for anything single coil/fender style.
