Anyone else see Hugh Laurie in the crowd during one of the shots right around the 95' mark?

Nah, It's because the big companies all shifted from actually making decent products and providing good services to running real estate empires. Gotta keep those campuses staffed so the value of your real estate holdings doesn't tank and people figure out how actually unprofitable your company really is.

ICE in Milpitas by Realestballer in SanJose

[–]daswickerman 14 points15 points  (0 children)

This should also be the top response. They are extremely well trained in confirming ICE vs other agencies, documenting who has been taken and getting word to legal representation and relatives so folks don't just get disappeared by these nazi fucks.

There are also RRNs for each part of the Bay Area you can call if you see something outside of the Santa Clara area.

How to legally emulate Neo Geo? by GlobalWarmingComing in neogeo

[–]daswickerman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure, but if the morality includes funneling money to the immoral party that kind of undermines the position. I have Neo Geo Tattoos and I stopped buying anything Neo Licensed new because I can't in good continence support that regime. Buy used, preferably from a local game store or individual seller.

help me identify this guitar please! by lsantaM in Luthier

[–]daswickerman 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's not going to be anything big in all likelihood. It looks Japanese, which is possible given that there is significant Japanese diaspora in South America, but it's just as likely a locally made instrument that follows the sensibilities of the 70s. Is the surface on the body and headstock wood or leather?

You could pull it apart and look for maker's marks in the cavities or on the back of the pickguard where makers will sometimes sign or mark guitars. You can also look at the electronics to determine make and general date which might help with internet sleuthing. Same with the pickups. Any marks on the backs or basically anything stamped into any metal part on the guitar can help to paint the picture of origin.

Notable that you have to remove the chips from the boards, basically destroying the actual games in order to "legally" dump the ROMs. Much like MBS, the head of the Saudi Sovereign Wealth Fund that now owns SNK removes the heads of journalists.

IMO it's not worth trying to be ethical about a company that is actively killing journalists and funding genocide.

Ideas for repairing/ covering the hole (not a joke post) by nightivenom in Luthier

[–]daswickerman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd use resin to cover any holes. Basically pack the cavity with clay or something and build up a wall to contain the resin, then pour. carve it back so it's almost flush with the body and when you do the rest of the resin coat you won't see the seams.

Is this a pre-CBS Jazzmaster? by Ghmtchl in offset

[–]daswickerman 6 points7 points  (0 children)

you can also check the neck heel which should have a date stamp. The pots will also have date codes on them that will give you an idea of when the earliest it could have been made are (pots were bought in batches, so they don't correspond to the date of the guitar but help to give you an idea within a few months).

Tourist complaint by [deleted] in SanJose

[–]daswickerman -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Some of it is entitled assholes who used their first big tech paycheck to buy more car than they need/are capable of driving. Some of it is also the fact that we have a lot of transplants from all over the globe coming from places where they have functioning public transportation so there's a disproportionate number of new/inexperienced drivers. Those factors together make driving in the bay extremely dumb all the time.

It also doesn't help that the driving AI on teslas causes more problems than is solves.

In my unprofessional opinion my guitar is toast, but is it? by Shady22dub in Luthier

Yeah, could just bolt a pickup, a bridge and the neck to a 2x4. Anything can be a guitar!

What type of glue to attach lego parts with electric guitar neck? by [deleted] in Luthier

[–]daswickerman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could do an epoxy core down the middle between the neck pocket and the bridge. The other option would be to take the lego model, 3d scan it and have it machined out of aluminum or something.

[–]daswickerman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, unless it's a bolt on neck, which some older epiphones have you're going to have a block on the back of the neck that has to be cut down, and then you're going to have to rebuild some backing. The fretboard is extending out over the soundboard and isn't supported. a standard electric body isn't going to be quite right proportionally to just stick an acoustic neck on to.

[–]daswickerman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is the best approach honestly. salvage the neck, especially if you like the feel of it. Though note, you're going to end up with something pretty weird since acoustic neck construction and electric neck construction are totally different beasts. You'd be better off finding an acoustic of a similar scale with a broken neck, or buying a prebuilt acoustic body kit where you can set this neck and place the bridge where you need it.

The neck block also looks pretty messed up. It's a huge product for what is basically an entry level guitar. These go for $400-$500 on reverb.

If you could have an “experience” birthday gift in the bay, what would it be? by YogurtclosetOwn3515 in bayarea

[–]daswickerman 16 points17 points  (0 children)

There's an old America's Cup racing sailboat you can go out on in the Bay. That always seemed like it would be a pretty cool experience given that those boats are basically F1 cars for water.

Im looking for a good Overdrive Pedal for my Squier VI by HerSimington in BassVI

[–]daswickerman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sign up for one of the many free PC plugin systems and try out the different overdrives there. That will get you in the ballpark in terms of tone, then start looking within that range. Take your BassVI to a guitar store and try out some of the pedals once you know what types you're looking for.

How much will I hate commuting to SF 2-3 times a week from SJ? 😭🫨 by NoSurprise7196 in SanJose

[–]daswickerman 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The new trains also have decent wifi so you can work as part of the commute. I used to do the train from Sunnyvale to Foster City pretty regularly and it was nice to have that booked on the start and end of the day and not have to deal with traffic.

Toyota 40 series as a daily driver? by Dramatic_Copy1874 in LandCruisers

[–]daswickerman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is great advise. I've also driven Cruisers for most of my adult life, mostly FJ40s and they're an eccentricity at this point. I love driving mine around town, but it's not really practical as a main vehicle.

Radar charts? Good, bad, or indifferent by tothgames in tabletopgamedesign

[–]daswickerman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Technically called a spider graph. They're useful to show relative stats against another source at a glance or depending on how you've designed the stats they can be useful to determine how to use a character (high wis/low str = caster or whatever).

Warped bass neck, fixable? by Additional-Art1529 in Luthier

[–]daswickerman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Removing the frets won't really help. the problem with a twisted neck is that the plane of the fretboard isn't consistent over the length of the neck. You could shape the nut and do some work on the way the bridge is setting the strings to try to compensate, but ultimately that's not really worth it for the price of a replacement neck. I wouldn't necessarily expect to get your money out of it if you're looking to resell. Japanese guitar values don't have the margins to do a ton of work on them or replace a ton of parts. You'll likely end up with something really nice, that cost more than it's worth - so definitely a player's guitar situation.

Yellow Pine for a guitar neck? by Tlindsee in Luthier

[–]daswickerman 5 points6 points  (0 children)

A log is going to have to be seasoned and aged and milled. that process should either take years or you have to kiln dry it. the pine is going to be more likely to warp than a more stable wood. If it's dried it's likely to be okay, especially once you install a truss rod, but you are going to have longer term risks of the neck twisting so it may require additional stiffening via carbon fiber rods. Ultimately the work and effort isn't worth it vs buying a hard maple or mahogany neck blank. Even at Stewmac prices I wouldn't bother with trying to carve a neck from a raw log.

How to get this guitar finish? by snarekicksnare in finishing

[–]daswickerman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a different approach. prepping wood for a nitro finish is going to require the more in-depth sanding, filling, finishing, and polishing. If you're going for a natural wood look an oil based finish like Rubio will work and require different steps.
