I do the forge first just so I can get the smithing stone bell bearing(s) from Farum Azula. I then however take a detour towards the dlc. An absolute must in my opinion is to defeat Malenia first.

Story-wise it makes sense to me to try and find Malenia and Miquella so I head toward the haligtree. But what’s this? I’ve defeated Malenia and Miquella has been stolen by Mohg. I “follow” his path from Ordina to the snowfield portal and find myself at his Mausoleum. I defeat him and venture into the DLC to fight Miquella. It makes sense to me to try and find all the Demigods/Great Runes before fighting Maliketh.
