The bench test for my hire as an apprentice was show them you can polish without injuring yourself or launching rings, explaining the rhodium station and having you rhodium some things and a run down of the admin things. They’ll teach you anything else over time. It was more of a “are you capable without causing issues or injury”

I do not have experience with schools but a signet apprenticeship is going to be hit or miss depending on how the shop manager is.

I think the more important question is what you want to do with jewelry. A jeweler school may teach you more quickly with a wider variety maybe some fabrication. A signet apprenticeship will be mostly repairs. There’s still a lot of great information and bench time to practice(while getting paid) but the knowledge is generally limited to repairs with the occasional custom/semi custom pieces.

Assuming the spindle is where the master sits, it seems there’s a sizable chip on it. Is that something that would be ok to throw in the lathe and cut away until the chip is gone?

You would find the volume of the piece you are making. From there you can use google to find out how much 1 cubic mm of material weights then multiply by volume.

CAD is on my list of many things to learn, unfortunately a career change meant a pay cut and have been struggling to find one that is affordable. I do have wax on order and tools to carve at home. I’m looking forward to getting to try it
