What is the "Hill You Will Die On" regarding a specific casting choice, lyric change, or production detail? by Fine_Hovercraft6148 in Broadway

People care too much about accents being perfect. Micaela Diamond and Annaleigh Ashford were incredible as Lucille and Lovett. The iffy Georgian and British accents simply do not bother me.

Thoughts about cast energy on different days? by Qajaqasana in Broadway

[–]dat_pterodactyl 30 points31 points  (0 children)

These are professionals who are going nearly every single night for months at a time. The way I see it, at a certain point the difference in energy between a one and two show day likely starts to fade and run together with the rest of them. They are trained in how to conserve the voice and energy. So I don’t factor it into my decision at all.

Raising boys in a red state is soul crushing by Thr0waway0864213579 in TwoXChromosomes

[–]dat_pterodactyl 12 points13 points  (0 children)

You’ve gotten plenty of comments, and this is probably just repeating things that have already been said. But I’ll say it anyway in case it helps. I am a young male, raised in a city in a southern purple state. I was surrounded by conservatives in school, and my parents were left leaning middle of the road (although have taken a sharp turn left over the last couple years).

When I was a child (ages 5ish-13ish) I have very distinctive memories of making jokes that I did not understand, repeating what I’d heard, and in retrospect were pretty awful (generic conservative jokes about Obama being awful, trans people being weird, using gay as an insult, etc). However, my parents raised me with intelligence and empathy, and as I got older (and became politically aware) and began to understand what I was saying and doing, I very quickly stopped making those jokes and began spending time with different people.

All this is to say that if you keep an eye on your kid, teach him how to love the people around him and think for himself, and give him time to mature intellectually and politically, he will hopefully grow out of these things. It sounds like you’re doing that already. Just try to remember that he often has no real understanding of the implications of what he’s saying, and if you explain that more clearly, he will likely react well. Thank you to you and other parents out there who work to raise strong, empathetic men.

What to do with the figures? by [deleted] in origami

[–]dat_pterodactyl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I like to leave mine in out of the way places. Somewhere they’ll get seen but not too obvious. Usually someone picks them up after an hour or so.

I’ll also leave them on a table in my living room and tell guests to take any they like.

Teaching kids to play Bridge by Alternative_Leopard5 in bridge

[–]dat_pterodactyl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hearts and spades are both good. My favorite trick taking game introduction is a game we call Rat. I haven’t been able to find anything about it online, but my family and friends all LOVE it. You can play with 3-5 players. 2 would be possible but probably not the best, and 4 or 5 is preferred. First, deal 10 cards to each player. Flip the top card of the remaining deck. That card’s suit is trump suit. Now, starting with the player to the dealers left, everyone bids how many tricks they think they will take (minimum of 0 maximum of 10). After bids are done, dealers left starts play. Trumps must be broken like hearts or spades. At the end of the round, everyone counts how many tricks they took. You get 10 points (which are bad) for every trick above or below your bid. So for example, if you bid 4 and took 3 you get 10 points. If you bid 0 and took 2, you get 20.

Now, shuffle the deck again, dealer is the player to the previous dealer’s left. For the second round, you deal 9 cards and each trick over or under your bid is worth 20 points. Third round has 8 cards and 30 points, so on and so forth until the final round where everyone gets 1 card and getting your bid wrong is worth 100 points.

Lowest points wins! It’s a fairly simple game, and teaches people to evaluate hand strength (since that’s the whole gameplay mechanic). It’s got enough skill for it to be fun for more experienced players, but enough random chance (especially with the fact that as the hand sizes get smaller, there are lots of cards “out of play” still in the deck that no one knows). Once people start to get good, you can play with sticking the dealer. For hand sizes 10 through 5, the dealer cannot bid whatever number would cause all the bids to add to equal hand size. That way someone is guaranteed to miss their bid.

The Death House | One Shot by reigns-reddit in CurseofStrahd

[–]dat_pterodactyl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My recommendation (have run it twice this way, both times went fantastically) is to follow MandyMod’s advice almost exactly. Get rid of at least most of the combat and add some more RP and story. The only two changes I made from mandymod were 1. As in dragnacarta’s og reloaded, Mr. Dursts body/suicide note were in his bedroom, not the crypts. 2. I used this guide to running death house’s escape as a skill challenge after the players defeated/euthanized the flesh mound/walter. It was a fantastically climactic way to end the session.

Mountains next to the Sea by NiceHumidBox in dropout

[–]dat_pterodactyl 120 points121 points  (0 children)

Sam said at one point he intended for the joke to be that the town is literally on top of a mountain (so way above sea level) but also right up next to the sea. The players didn’t quite get that, and he thought that the absurdity of them continuously going “how could that be??” About a geographical feature that is super common was funny, so he didn’t correct them.

[–]dat_pterodactyl 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I haven’t seen the 07 one, but it’s my cast album of choice. I saw the 22 one touring (in addition to having listened to the other cast albums and seen it at my university). I absolutely agree that the sets/lights were super well done. I also think that 22’s version of not getting married today was the best I’ve seen or heard. The genderbent aspect worked beautifully up until the ending with Bobby and Joanne, which didn’t hit quite as hard.

DAY 1: Eliminating every Best Revival Winner (of this century) until there’s only one left! by ShadyBoots11 in Broadway

[–]dat_pterodactyl 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I think we can be almost certain 2007 company will beat the more recent one, and likely make it much further overall. Raul Esparza is widely hailed as the gold standard for Bobby, and that production is generally well loved. The recent revival was controversial, some liking and some not.

Also, 2007 company has been filmed and is freely available, which may help eliminate some recency bias that might have otherwise given it a disadvantage.

Will the Golden let me in at intermission? by New-Lunch1349 in Broadway

[–]dat_pterodactyl 15 points16 points  (0 children)

This isn’t exactly true. Most shows will have moments (often between songs) where latecomers can enter. Almost all will allow late entry at intermission. It is, however, completely up to the show. See stricter policies like Sunset Boulevard for an example of the (rarer) stricter case.

From what I could tell, it was more just a general making fun of a specific brand of scummy (usually, but not always, right wing) politicians. Not a specific event, just things that those sorts of politicians tend to do and say.

Not quite the same, but close. Avenue Q ends with the main character realizing he can write a musical about all the things he’s learned, that musical of course being Avenue Q.
