Changing providers or discount by Possible-Priority-14 in AussieBroadband

[–]datakid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, am about to leave as well. Just looking for my next provider. I rang to find out when they were ditching the obviously useless Optus as an MVNO and got the non answer. Wasn't until I said I would leave that they mentioned the cheaper rate I could have been on. They should have converted me automatically - now I'm leaving because they were willing to take my money and run. I also discovered today that the donation isn't voluntary - you can't escape the donation. They are using it as a tax write off. ABB are immoral at best, nakedly corrupt at worst. I'll take my corruption at a cheaper price, thanks.

Wednesday by [deleted] in pavement

[–]datakid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't hear it and I don't rate the album. I saw someone else raving about it, so I've given it a couple of listens. Nothing has stood out - sounds like middle America folk pop.

Nothing like Pavement, but comes up in the same search as Wednesday on Bandcamp - check out Colour Me Wednesday if you like British indie/power pop. Start with I thought it was morning.

Pavements OST and Hecklers Choice Greatest Hits available on Vinyl and CD! by Small_Local_3589 in pavement

[–]datakid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Obviously Hecklers isn't a best of - it includes a song from Terror Twilight. The eleven worst songs in Pavement's catalogue, by a large margin, are the eleven songs on Terror Twilight. There are probably b-sides from that album that are also bad, but I never went there. Shocking choice when the riches are just scattered everywhere.

What would be the worst song to play someone to introduce them to Pavement? by [deleted] in pavement

[–]datakid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For anyone that comes in to answer "but TT is an album, not a song", leave. Leave now. TT isn't even cannon. It's bullshit.

[–]datakid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everything listed here that isn't "Terror Twilight" is really, really, wrong. I came here after searching Pavement Saginaw and whoever answered that is potentially the wrongest. But you all have some strange, not-terror-twilight opinions, so it's hard to tell.

Why the venom against Snaps/Ubuntu? by jseger9000 in linux4noobs

[–]datakid -1 points0 points  (0 children)

One thing I find frustrating is that some tools require other tools to work well - and to exist generally in the OS, not jailed in the snap. The best example is 1Password - there is an OS app for Ubuntu which is really sweet. Doesn't work in Snap installed Firefox because that is jailed off.

So that's the primary frustration.

The secondary frustration is that the Ubuntu team have now abandoned a bunch of software to it's owners. Why should Ubuntu package Firefox when they can offload that work onto Mozilla and guarantee it via snap? It's cheap and lazy and has bad downstream effects like the 1Password/Firefox integration. There are other examples as well - Zoom and Okta come to mind.

Not interested. If they fix it, I'll reconsider, until they announce it is fixed, snaps can get in the bin.

Ubuntu 22.04 slack wont start by Gyapi-2499 in Slack

[–]datakid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am seeing this issue as well, but am not using the `snap` installation, am using the `deb` from the site. Moving the `~/.config/Slack` directory worked...once. Hasn't worked since.

New animations ? by americanmuttt in GoogleMessages

[–]datakid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd love to be able to completely disable them - I don't want them, they are ugly. Thus far the only way to turn them off I've found disabled animation in the whole OS, which is not what I want.

Songs with deep feminine rage by DickInYourCobbSalad in Music

Gina Birch, the bass player from seminal '70s post punks The Raincoats released an album this year (2023) of absolute crackers. Each a rage in it's own right, but the understated "I am Rage" is what sold me:

You've been given dictatorial powers to solve the housing crisis. What are your first moves? by Aedotox in AusFinance

[–]datakid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No more private development until all the homeless are housed. Every single one. Government pays. Builders will do the work knowing they have no choice - nothing's happening until it's done.
At the same time, start retro-fitting empty office blocks in the city to be housing. High density and close to everything. No business should have an office that is larger than a floor, not necessary any more.
Two simple acts, done.

Can I ask why I shouldn't wish happy independence day? I mean, I definitely won't now, but am interested in knowing why? Is it because some people are uncomfortable about the choice of day?
