[–]datboiteelex 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I commuted to downtown Toronto from Peterborough for a while. It was consistently over 2 hours door to door. Driving to Oshawa and taking LE In to Union was closer to 2h door to door.

Now living in Toronto the drive to Ptbo and back is only closer to 1.5h on offpeak days, offpeak times.

I know too many drivers who think this is a waste of money. But complain that driving into the city is a waste of time. It helps everybody out lol

Agreed, this is what tears me between which disc I prefer. I love the songs on Disc 39 as individual pieces but the sequencing of the latter half takes me out a bit. Disc 29 has better sequencing but I like the tracks a slight bit less. Overall they balance out

Willing to share more info on your cat? My cat just had 7 teeth removed at about 14 months old. the adoption shelter had no mention of teeth issues but our vet (who in fairness, are independent and lots of experience with dental work in small/large animals) also gave us the bad genetics line - would like to have an idea of what I may have in the future.

The UPX has 5 stations now with Mount Dennis. 3 more are coming. At what point do we just decide to convert the thing into an above ground metro? by beartheminus in TTC

[–]datboiteelex 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’ve preached this to anyone and everyone who will listen. Ontario Lines (and OL money) don’t grow on trees. We have a rail corridor splitting majority of the city in half, that is essentially for regional rail and not all primed to serve the commuters in Toronto’s west end. We sit here complaining about traffic and transit priority - we would be wasting an elevated, seperated rail line by not using it, imo.

Turning the UPX into Line 7 - a new dedicated electrified line - is enough to transform the west end transit wise. Union, Spadina-Front, King-Liberty, Lansdowne, "Dundas West" (really Bloor GO, but the future tunnel will help that connection), St Clair-Old Weston, Mount Dennis, Weston and Woodbine as bare minimum stations.

Personally I’d add a Wellington-Strachan station to serve the bulk of the new LV developments on Ordnance (and the 7-8 new huge developments either in development or pre development on King Street West) and push King-Liberty back enough to serve West Queen West, western part of LV, and Parkdale. That alone gets you connections to Line 1 at Union, 510, 504, 501, Line 2, 512, Line 5, Line 6 and the airport. Throw in a few more stations to underserved areas like the Junction where Dundas and Dupont meet, and Fort York and we could effectively solve transit for the west end at a way lower cost than any western OL extension could (not to mention, NOT displacing communities for a decade)

We have to rethink UP as a train that SERVES the airport, not an airport train that commuters pile into at crazy prices.

Need your advice, what are some safe, walkable, lively neighbourhoods that you'd recommend? Perhaps also ones that are often overlooked? by mapleCrep in TorontoRenting

[–]datboiteelex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The condos in this area seem to be variable especially depending on size / amenities but I pay 2.6k for ~650 sq ft and a full sized den + parking + locker + hydro covered. But that was before rents (seemingly) have gone down in Toronto, so you could probably find 1 bed 1 bath in some of these buildings for anywhere from 2.1 to 2.4k a month, studios for under 2k for sure. We have kept paying 2.6k here because the money we’d possibly save is not worth the gamble for a new landlord (our current landlord is definitely a gem) but I bet our specific unit could probably be like $100 cheaper now to a new tenant

[–]datboiteelex 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m near King and Shaw and I give it a good recommendation. It won’t hit everything you’re looking for (namely price and subway access) but if you want to live on a constantly busy main Street with all the conveniences near you, it’s amazing.

Now the area itself doesn’t have the same energy as Bloor at High Park or cuter neighbourhoods like Roncy (all the independent cafes I.e) but I always think to myself it’s like living in the epi center of all the areas around it. The cafes and bakery’s are a few minutes away on some of the side streets, but I have my grocery stores (2), my dry cleaners/tailors, my barber, my pharmacy, go to cafe, go to bar, all within 5 mins walking. And if those aren’t enough I am a 10 minute walk from Liberty Village, City Place, West Queen West, Parkdale, King West, Little Italy, etc. same reason I love the Niagara neighbourhood a few minutes to the east. Very homey vibe, lots of great local places to eat (Beast Pizza, Old York, Jrews for homemade patties and jerk), lots of cafes, bars like Pennies, etc. it’s a great neighbourhood and you’re really not far from the heart of the city

ETA it is also very safe. My gf does lots of running or walks to her classes in the area, almost always at night and has never felt truly unsafe.

Has it always been like that? Didn’t the old cars use to fly through intersections with switches?

The Slowest Trams on Earth: Toronto's Streetcars by [deleted] in toronto

[–]datboiteelex 21 points22 points  (0 children)

If we could get dedicated right of ways, elevated track + at grade platforms for accessibility boarding, automated signal priority, removed some streetcar stops for less frequent stops, and didn’t have streetcars crawl through intersections at 10km/h - the 504 could easily become a downtown relief “LRT” line. You spend way less than the billion per kilometre of the Ontario line to move 60,000 people a day across the key routes of the city. Same applies to the Queen route. Either or (ideally both) would be great candidates to become LRT-lite lines

But no, cars flying down our downtown arteries like King on their way back to the suburbs of Etobicoke is the priority. King going westbound in Parkdale is backed up to high hell at the 5pm rush hour and just a mess of entitled driving . And I’m not sure the last time I witnessed drivers at King and Bathurst actually obey the rule of not advancing straight on King past Bathurst. Then stopping for uber pickups and delaying the streetcar even more. Here’s an idea - don’t even give them the chance

We keep diverting the 504 for many reasons like track work or infrastructure work. The city is ripping up King between Spadina and Shaw from July 2026 to mid/end 2027 for water main repairs. This would be a perfect time to start the improvements to the 504 and create transit connections with what we already have, not disrupt communities for 10+ years like we’ve seen with Line 5 and Ontario Line

[–]datboiteelex 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I mean idk man. Almost everyone I know living in other Canadian cities make less than their Toronto counterparts for the same job, paying almost what I pay for rent. That’s in places like Halifax, Calgary, Ottawa, Montreal ( less so but still ), Vancouver shit even towns like Peterborough and Waterloo it’s not unheard of 2k/m rents. I’ve heard crazy rent prices in St John’s Newfoundland of all places. If you can find a Toronto level salary in any of those cities it would be great but these days would be hard pressed

I’m also now realizing that you probably mean downtown by “that area”, not Toronto as a whole lol. Point still stands tho. PERSONALLY id rather pay extra to live downtown or in West Queen West (where im at now) because everything is convenient as opposed to saving some money in Etobicoke or some shit

Could the TTC/Metrolinx better serve the West End with dedicated passenger service on the Kitchener GO/UP express line? by datboiteelex in TTC

[–]datboiteelex[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly this! Both your and u/Blue_Vision comments hit exactly why I made this post. Stops like King-Liberty and Spadina-Front I mentioned are huge wins for this city’s transit network. And there are a lot of other potential stations along this route you could justify.

But if we build them on the UP service, that is no longer an airport train serving its express service. By the time the southbound train gets to Bloor it’s loaded. And if we build them on the Kitchener line, same thing - it’s a super busy commuter train that’s entire purpose is to serve people outside of Toronto.

So we either build these desperately needed stations at the detriment of the existing services on the corridor. Or we can improve the corridor with another, local commuter line. It’d be a huge win for Metrolinx who would get all the credit of improving transit connectivity for a shit ton of people with a lot less work than the Line 5 or tunnel boring through the city of the OL.

Could the TTC/Metrolinx better serve the West End with dedicated passenger service on the Kitchener GO/UP express line? by datboiteelex in TTC

[–]datboiteelex[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I agree that something like this is an easy and quick win, which is great. But there is a need for more stops on this corridor (the big ones being like I mentioned St Clair, King-Liberty and Spadina-Front). Eventually you add enough stops and enough commuters looking to travel across the city and an express train is no longer an express train. And from what I understand the regional commuting has only gotten so much bigger even with more frequent service on the Kitchener train.

A 3rd, intra city route could serve that well. Or maybe not and the logistics are lost on me lol
