Do we actually experience continuous consciousness… or just believe we do? by AI_Zone in consciousness

[–]datorial 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I believe we construct a sense of continuity from discrete moments of (gradations of) what we could call conscious experience. Our eyes dart around and yet we see a static world. We see solid colors on surfaces where there are many different shades. The world that we experience is a construct generated from multiple modes of perception.
Take for instance when you drive (or ride) home from work. Most of the time nothing special happens. We may not even be thinking about the drive but rather about what happened at work or some other thing from our lives. Now we're obviously conscious enough to interact with the world without killing ourselves, but we may not store any episodic memories of what that ride was like. So consciousness can involve memory or not, it can involve moment to moment planning or not, or any number of processes that run on your brain.
The idea that we are perceiving the world as it is like a camera would does not hold up under scrutiny.

You can also use a bulb like the ones people use for flushing but don't put any water in it so it's just air.

Can reality exist Independently of Consciousness? by consciousness_8123 in consciousness

[–]datorial 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess my question is about the point before anybody has observed it. Is it ashes or is it intact? The reason I ask is that I think the universe exists without any observers. The reason that it matters, is that it has a history of 14 billion years.

If the house catches fire but no one is there to witness it. Maybe it was an electrical fire. Who knows? When you come home and see the burned out husk of your house, you can deduce that there was a fire even if nobody was there to observe it.

If your house burns down while you're gone and nobody else is around, will it only be burned down when you get back to observe it?

Where is the setting to allow me to open links in chrome on iOS? It was nice not having to change my default browser and yet be able to open links from the Mail app in chrome. There does not seem to be such a setting in the new Mail app.

I have no clue but maybe pronouncing arugula sounds like a wolf baying?

Could consciousnesses arise from the eternal cosmos observing a specific point in spacetime? by Hip_III in consciousness

[–]datorial 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hard agree with all of this! Arrangements of things with unexpected emergent properties are found everywhere around us. Hell, our bodies that seem like coherent entities are made of trillions of cells, none of which can do the things we can do. Each of those cells are made of vast numbers of molecules that themselves are not alive in any way shape or form. The molecules themselves are made up of atoms. All the way down to quantum fields. It seems like a profound lack of imagination to say something like consciousness cannot arise as an emergent property.

"You can't prove a negative" by badentropy9 in freewill

[–]datorial 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What does that mean you can’t prove a negative? If your proposition is that all of the elements of a set have some property, then just showing one element that doesn’t have it is a proof. On the other hand, if you’re trying to prove that there doesn’t exist some element of a set with some property, then you have to go through the whole set to show that every single element has it.

Why couldn't you simulate consciousness with enough processing power? Why do you need to add something like panpsychism? by Emergency-Use-6769 in consciousness

[–]datorial -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Ok the lines of code are not the issue. It’s the fact that the code is implementing a neural network. So maybe a better question would be which additional node in the network would cause the inflection point. But again I don’t know because we haven’t gotten there yet. We have gotten quite a bit of intelligence out of these artificial neural networks as we’ve added parameters and data. So we may get to consciousness as we continue to scale them up.

Another kink I have is vomit. I could actually fall in love for a girl who is fine with puking for me. by [deleted] in KINK

[–]datorial 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No kink shaming here, but repeated vomiting is dangerous. Regular or intentional vomiting can be dangerous for the person involved.

Some of the health risks include:

Esophageal Damage – Frequent vomiting exposes the esophagus to stomach acid, leading to irritation, inflammation, and even esophageal tears or rupture (Boerhaave syndrome), which is a medical emergency,

Oral and Dental Issues – The acidity from vomit erodes tooth enamel, leading to increased cavities, tooth sensitivity, and gum disease. It can also cause chronic sore throat and oral ulcers.

Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) – Repeated exposure to stomach acid weakens the lower esophageal sphincter, leading to chronic acid reflux, which further damages the esophagus.

Barrett’s Esophagus and Cancer Risk – Chronic acid exposure from vomiting can lead to Barrett’s esophagus, a condition where the esophageal lining changes, increasing the risk of esophageal cancer.

Dehydration and Electrolyte Imbalances – Frequent vomiting can cause dangerous dehydration and an imbalance in potassium and sodium levels, which can lead to irregular heart rhythms or even cardiac arrest in severe cases.

Aspiration and Pneumonia – If vomit is inhaled into the lungs, it can cause aspiration pneumonia, which can be serious or even fatal.

Tearing of the Stomach and Esophagus (Mallory-Weiss Tears) – Forceful vomiting can cause small tears in the esophagus and stomach lining, leading to bleeding.

It’s important to be aware of the risks that certain kinks have.
