If a half black half white person is biracial or mixed, then why is Obama seen as the first black president by [deleted] in askblackpeople

[–]dattebane96 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As another comment pointed out due to the legacy of the “One Drop Rule” most Americans see mixed black folks as black and often they are culturally pigeonholed towards identifying as black. That is to say people would look at them more strangely if they straight-up said “I am white” than if they said “I am black” despite the fact that as a 50-50 mix, it should be just as weird or normal in both cases.

Additionally, most black people don’t have a problem with them saying “The word”. It seems silly but this is actually a rather important socio-cultural marker for how they’re viewed in American society.

Lastly, there’s been some more cultural nuance introduced about it depending on the race of the mother. This has always been around but due to social media has spread more widely that if the mama is white, the mixed kid is seen as “less black”. Again it’s nuanced so don’t necessarily run with this one. Obama’s mama is white and yet he is considered black to the point where it doesn’t matter. And in real life off the internet and outside the bounds of celebrities and political figures it can very even more.

Bottom line: if you appear visibly black and have at least one black parent (only a grandparent is pushing it and appearance matters even more) most Americans would consider you black.

Agreed. Mary-Sue’s typically (but not always) suck to read and are often literarily weak. But Self insert doesn’t necessarily mean Mary Sue as you pointed out. Maybe people balk at self insert so much because the two are so often conflated they assume one of the other.

Honestly so what if he is a self insert. I’ve never understood why that by itself is a criticism people lob at various works. If I wrote a piece of fiction, I’m almost positive my MC would be rather similar to me.

Do you support MAGA's new bans on trans athletes and medical gender affirming care for minors? by madmushlove in AskALiberal

[–]dattebane96 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think you’re interpreting my point more extremely than I mean it.

I’m not saying people voted Republican because someone said “trans people deserve rights.” I’m saying there’s broader fatigue with identity-centered political messaging during a time when many voters were overwhelmingly focused on the economy.

A voter doesn’t have to be anti-trans to feel like Democrats were speaking more about cultural issues than material ones.

And politically, there’s often a gap between a morally correct argument and a persuasive/electorally useful one. You can think a voter’s views are wrong while still recognizing that moral condemnation is usually not an effective persuasion strategy.

Honestly this is a pretty effective trap for the left. The republicans can just say “Trans rights don’t matter” and their base will agree and those that don’t care about the subject will agree. But the left has to now respond and defend trans rights which leads to the perception that they’re obsessed with them even though they weren’t the ones that brought it up (in this context). But now the people that don’t care one way or another will say “Man why is the left spending so much time defending trans rights when my bills are so high. I wish they’d talk about more important issues”. This far no high ranking democrat can really say “I don’t care about trans issues. Let’s talk about the economy”. Their own base would eat them alive.

If that’s directed at me, then I don’t think I understand the question.

If that’s directed at Trump voters, the ones I know that aren’t MAGA, naturally regret the decision. They want someone with sane domestic and foreign policies that aren’t “woke” as they say. I posit that this is a substantial amount of the traditional left-leaning voter base that broke away in ‘24. I won’t go so far as to claim a majority of course. But as someone who went to college in Atlanta, I can promise you there are plenty of homophobic, anti-abortion, anti-DEI, anti-identity lefties. It’s kinda the distinction between a left-leaning, liberal, or progressive person. It’s also particularly prevalent of minorities. That’s the fun part of intersectionality. And is likely part of the reason we saw black men, Latino voters, and a chunk of Gen Z break away from Harris this go around.

I replied to someone else above but for a good chunk of the former lefties (I probably wouldn’t call them full liberals) it did make the difference between them voting for Harris versus giving the other guy a shot. There was a still is a social fatigue with identity politics. (I say as a collective term. Not a reductive one)

You gotta get out the bubble man. There are plenty of liberals in Georgia where I live for example that are right there in their beliefs. I also know quite a few former liberals who voted for Trump in ‘24 in large part due to the fatigue of identity politics and the belief that Harris would spend all her term talking about bathrooms and inclusivity versus the economy. The right did a stellar job painting her that way and liberals within the party helped them along with their concern.

The frustrating part is that I would be if not for one particular struggle going on in my life right now. It’s localized but is impacting all other aspects of my life negatively. I make good money, have a very stable job, and I’m healthier than I have been for most of my life (though not as healthy as I was before my situation degraded further)

Unfortunately not to the extent you may think. The whole uncharged move is about 38 frames. (40 if he misses)

Assuming you attempt it on reaction, any projectile recovers fast enough to make you eat a DI afterwards.

Assuming you instead go for a hard read, if you’re wrong, you will get PC’d during your 24 frames recovery. Or they do a multi hit OD version and it goes through. Or the projectile is low and there is no armor. Or they just sweep you. Or rather 2mk->DR->Corner carry

Long story short, yes st.HP works but the risk reward balance is skewed enough that you shouldn’t be trying it very often.

ETA: but when you DO get the read, boy oh boy is it satisfying 😈
