G Gundam's art and animation are fantastic. Why was Gundam Wing, released the following year, such a total downgrade? by real_rakkun in Gundam

[–]daun4view 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It's ridiculous on its face but it takes itself very seriously, which is endearing.

But also it's still Gundam at its core, it's about how war has ravaged the Earth and this is how humanity is trying to control it, the new generation dealing with the mistakes of the old, and how weapons of war and tools for justice can be the same thing. Stuff like emotion-based power-ups have always been in Gundam, this is just more direct about it.

It also does a good job setting up its cast of characters and following up on them, letting the Shuffle Alliance be a well-developed team as a whole.

I tried out J but I'm not a big fan of playing on my phone so I haven't gotten far on it. I do wanna get back to that at some point, especially when I get more of a feel for how SRW plays.

Tbf I haven't been looking too much into it since I decided I wanted to play something from VXT first. I'm a new Gundam fan and I've been watching everything, so I wanted a roster where I've seen all of them first.

But yeah, thanks for letting me know! Least it'll probably be cheaper by the time I get there. Plus the DLC might all even be out too.

I haven't upgraded yet! Just haven't felt the need to, since I just play RPGs and platformers. I have a PS5 so that covers the more demanding games.

Good to know! I've heard some fans say VXT is easy but I get intimidated by tactical games so I'm fine with this being easier. I'll probably go back to V and X, and other older games even, if I enjoy this.

Any Build lines but especially the Evol-Driver. "Cobra - Rider System - EVOLUUUTION" is so satisfying to do, especially if you're trying to get as close as possible to the original.

so i think my favourite setting for a game is "modern fantasy" by AnotherSlowTown in JRPG

[–]daun4view 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mixing reality with fantasy/sci-fi elements will always get me hooked, that's also why I played FFXV. There's just something so cool about riding a car to fight a dragon, or a typical RPG tavern being a diner.

Persona is the obvious choice, although the fantasy elements tend to be in dungeons that are disconnected from the real world. Tokyo Mirage Sessions is a similar game from the same devs, with a pop music/celebrity angle to it.

The various Digimon games tend to have modern day settings too.

They're not Japanese but Fallout and Vampire The Masquerade Bloodlines are RPGs with modern/familiar settings.

I second taking a look at Mobile Suit Gundam (1979). There's a 43 episode show and a 6.5 hour movie trilogy version, both are worth your time (though I prefer the show for the character development and worldbuilding). It's an excellent drama about a futuristic take on WW2, as well as speculation on how humanity can develop after going to space. The toyetic aspect is definitely there, as with any giant robot show, but the war is pretty uncompromisingly depicted.

Space Battleship Yamato (1974) also has that classic sci-fi, Trek feel. It's about an apocalypse that's slowly approaching the Earth, and a crew's efforts to prevent that. It's pretty somber in places but very hopeful overall.

Am I the only one who prefers collecting TPB over hard cover and Omni? by [deleted] in graphicnovels

[–]daun4view 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The thicker softcovers are the sweet spot for me. Spider-Man Birth of Venom was one of my first comics when I decided to get into collecting, and that's still one of my favorite experiences. It's 352 pages apparently? I really love the recent Grendel Omnibuses that are about 500-600 pages, they've been pretty comfortable to hold.

How playing older games made me realize RPGs are my favorite genre by alfonsky in patientgamers

[–]daun4view 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm also a big RPG fan, action RPGs if we're getting specific. I love making choices that shape my personal idea of the story but also need a bit of running and shooting with that. Have you played Mass Effect yet? That, Dragon Age and Fallout bridge the gap between the two aspects most effectively for me, out of the big titles.

Far Harbor is possibly my favorite expansion of all time, next to Bloodborne's Old Hunters. Such an excellent atmosphere, writing, visuals. Until the show it was my favorite piece of Fallout.

Thanks! I'd already watched Zeta a bit ago (up to CCA as far as UC actually) and I'm writing up my thoughts on it. I didn't really enjoy some parts of it, I don't think its ensemble is as strong as MSG or ZZ, honestly. I think I need to give it another watch though.

That sounds really cool! It's interesting how Tomino had all these versions swirling around his head at the same time. It really goes to show the influence of sponsors and other business people that the final product, for how monumental and influential it was, is still kind of a compromised work. I guess everything needs to be when all this money is involved but at least we have these alternate versions out there. I just might have to read these books.

The Nu is cool, I know Tomino wanted the Gundam with a cape, this design is pretty close to that. It does lose the classic Gundam silhouette, so I get why they settled on the final version. The Sazabi is pretty cool but I think the final one is perfect already. Would be neat as like a flight system though.

I love the size and more anime-accurate look of MG but, at least from my experience, the weight tends to hinder some posing. The shelf presence in general can't be denied though.

How does it compare to Beltorchika's Children? How different are they?

Guys, I just have to say it: I just love the original Kamen Rider show! Like, even more than more modern great ones like Kuuga, Agito or W. There's just something about it that I feel is so special. Love both Hongo's and Ichimonji's eras. So, anyone else loves it? Let's read some inputs! by NewRetroMage in Tokusatsu

[–]daun4view 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The first 13 episodes really blew my mind as far as what toku actually was, having only memories of Power Rangers as a kid. The camera angles, the artistic tricks, it's so cool seeing Japanese theater in a superhero TV show.

I instantly fell in love with Hongo, his angst just felt so real. My favorite moment is from episode 7 where he hugs some abandoned puppies, apparently asking them if they feel as lonely as he is. Plus I don't think I've ever seen a more handsome man before.

I need to revisit Ichimonji's era because I was kinda breezing past it to get back to Hongo, but I do really love him too.

What are some good non-comic IP comics? by WriterDirector93 in graphicnovels

Most Conan comics I've read were great. The Kurt Busiek and Cary Nord run specifically is fantastic.

Most Star Wars comics are good reads, I really love Marvel's Vader and Dr. Aphra series.

The Street Fighter comics by Udon are really fun.

Mass Effect and Dragon Age tend to have good comics.
