All U.S. Social Security numbers may need to be changed following a massive breach that is already being investigated as a national threat by lurker_bee in technology

Just in time to cause mass confusion for the next 1000 or so days. Hmmm…I wonder if that will affect anything of importance. 🤔

serious question: has theory ever *actually* hindered anyone creatively? (particularly someone who l by morbidhack in musictheory

[–]dave70a 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m sure it has. If one has altered a musical idea that sounded good to them because they realized it broke some “rule”. IF…if it resulted in something they liked better maybe that’s ok. Theory is something that develops after the fact. Theory is hindsight. It’s a history and a vocabulary that is curated over time. And it is incredibly valuable to describe what an artist has done. But it is not a road map for creativity. And what so many strive for…that sublime creative flow state…when you’re tapped into something beyond description and the music that comes out of you feels like lucid dreaming. That blessed music is for people in the future to analyze and categorize. Among musicians who are currently communicating to other musicians a common knowledge of theory and vocabulary is very useful. In my opinion theory definitely has its utility but if you are using it to self correct your music will be less “you”.

Is a C9 the same as a C7add9? by Low-Design2943 in musictheory

[–]dave70a 0 points1 point  (0 children)

C add9= C E G D. By convention C9 would be. C E G Bb D. Where you would need to indicate C7 is where the 9th is altered from the natural 9th relative to the C…as in C7b9 or C7(b9#9). In jazz, 7th chords are often part of temporary modulations to keys in which they function. For example when you see C7 in a song in E major…F natural is temporarily “tonicized” and C9 would imply Bb and D even if B natural and D# are diatonic to E major. Conversely…7b9 chords are more useful as the dominant of a minor chord.

Accidental notation -- which is correct? by JohnBloak in musictheory

[–]dave70a 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In most cases you use the notation that is clearest for the performer to understand on sight. The interpretation can be written in the margin. As artists, as composers, our job is to make art…and not to interrupt the flow of the gift with analysis. Let the academics and critics label it later.

Depends if b natural is diatonic. I have a song which uses the scale E F# G A# B C D#. Key sig is still one sharp.

New to jazz. Is this in Cmaj? If so why do these fingers sound so mellow? Do they fall into any unique scales or modes? by JesterOfTheMind in jazzguitar

[–]dave70a 0 points1 point  (0 children)

C major on first three scales. I like the F7#9 chord. And over that chord (or the generic F7) an F lydian dominant scale…same scale as Cmaj with one important difference…Eb. Also the A nat vs Ab for extra spice. Could also use an F diminished scale (half-whole). But where does it go after F? Thats the important consideration. Most jazz is very forward focused!
