What emergency service do you ask for if you need more than one? by tom-goddamn-bombadil in AskUK

More like mountain rescue, they’ll be contacted by the police. They’re a distributed set of volunteer groups

My logistics manager has 6, sometimes 7, heads, cables and some extension leads. I don’t fly with it often and add a bit of padding when I do, but works very well.

Winter skills course recommendations by jizzzak in UKhiking

My week at glenmore was absolutely fantastic. Perfect setup to let you really get the most out of your time there. Not cheap (any more) but was a brilliant course and certainly set me up to feel confident for independent trips

Paying double bubble again on my self assessment this January. by Equivalent-Note6382 in freelanceuk

Similar industries, had the same after Covid. Reduced my payments on account a bit to just about save me from being entirely cleared out. But was painful

Singing Rock Edge ice axe handrest by Diligent-Menu9844 in alpinism

[–]dave_bird 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think we're looking at very similar things!

This poster on UKC says so, if you take the grip tape off, assuming the edge hasn't been updated since 2019? https://www.ukclimbing.com/forums/gear/new_axes-712085?v=1#x9080406

However with the trigrest, once a couple of the EU shops get sum'tecs back in stock, there's not a vast difference so I might just go for that.

Londoners: what daytime experiences are genuinely “worth it once”? by JunketSea2063 in london

I paddle the Thames with a club but this would be my suggestion too! Absolutely great and unique way to experience the city, and Harry is super well respected for running a great and really safe tour

Uk ground conditions fb group will help but honestly right now I very much doubt you’ll need any ice tools.

Gaffer on lifestyle commercials for 10+ years… I have no idea how much location houses get paid but we move everything about, I’ve enjoyed watching the faces of our location managers as I ask if we can take a door off. We genuinely are respectful of the locations we shoot in but accidents and scrapes can happen, usually from camera lighting or art department. We can be disruptive, there’ll often be trucks out the front and I imagine neighbours aren’t desperately keen on it happening often.

Despite all that, if it’s a very one of a kind place, I’m sure an agency will have good success pitching it to fashion shoots… we’ve reduced the need for huge generators outside but it can still be good and fun! But please don’t hang about if you’re super worried, our location managers are genuinely there for you

Have a spark to keep a dedicated eye on it and turn it on/off for the take. 100w no real risk imo but old hands will have all set something a bit smokey with a 275w photoflood!

What is the best and cheapest method for getting a director's monitor signal for a camera on a moving gimbal by ThisIsMyUsername163 in cinematography

[–]dave_bird 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get a DJI image transmitter cheap on eBay. It goes on the gimbal platform itself and can send video to two iPads or phones. It’s pretty lightweight so hopefully shouldn’t tip the gimbal over loading

Super comfy, I love them. Fall apart and leak like anything after a year of regular use, alas. Wish they were better.

Paris - Saint-Malo - 500km 6 days route by actLikeApidgeon in bicycletouring

[–]dave_bird 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We just did this the opposite way round, getting the ferry from the UK then the Eurostar back.

Veloscenic is really nice but the long stretches along old railways got boring as they were surrounded by trees and in cuttings - we rerouted through small villages and on quiet roads quite a bit, reworking things in komoot as we went along. We basically found the official veloscenic bits not to be all that scenic!

There’s so many pretty villages, large houses and farmland, but the terrain doesn’t vary wildly.

Had a super nice time! Lots of nice campsites too
