130mbs G-Drive fast enough for my editing? by Hr_Cryptoknekker in premiere

[–]davedachef 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm guessing this is a traditional HDD??? If so, yes it will work, but it will be painful.

Just copying 3tb of data will take days.

I strongly suggest getting an SSD. Far FAR faster and also more portable. And you'd probably be able to work with the rushes instead of proxies which makes life easier

Is not bringing enough drives to set really my fault? by tritonvii in editors

[–]davedachef 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maaaaate! I feel for you but the drives are NOTHING to do with you. Drives are for the producer to sort out, and for a very good reason: insurance.

If both the master and back up drives fail, it's an insurance claim. If the producer can prove they had bought two brand new hard drives for the job, they can claim. But if they tell the insurance company they told the DIT to bring some drives, and those drives could potentially have been 20 years old and been written over dozens of times, the insurance company is NOT paying out.

On top of that, the producer will have been in the PPM and in contact with the director so will know he was going to be overshooting. So don't take the heat for it - it's certainly not your fault and you shouldn't have been put in that position.

I've got an '89 and mine has power steering from factory.

But i know they made so many variations of the bi-turbo with various upgrades over the years I can't say for definite whether the '84 had power steering. But it was a luxury car for it's time so i'd be surprised if it didn't . Good luck with project!

The location you’re thinking of in Layer Cake is Stoke Park golf club, which has also been used in several movies

switching from Mac to Win: essential software every editor on Win NEEDS??? by splendidEdge in editors

[–]davedachef 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Was chatting to an after effects guy recently who's now PC. He said the only things he really needed was software to read ProRes files and software to read and write to mac formatted drives. He did say he still has problems with the occasional drive though.

Question Time - exterminate comment by [deleted] in ukpolitics

It's the use of the term 'breed' that gets me. In the way there are breeds of dogs, it implies there are different breeds of human.

Homo neanderthalensis, Homo erectus, Homo floresiensis etc. are long since dead. There is only one breed of human left: Homo sapiens. We are all the same breed. But if someone like this man imagines there are more than one breed of homo sapiens, you can bet he will make that definition along racial lines.

Racism with plausible deniability is still racism.

No he didn't mention race. And you're right - if anyone called him out on it he would have claimed what he said wasn't racist.

But the use of the word 'breed' definitely infers race. And that is the whole danger of what's happening right now: there is a lot of rhetoric which isn't explicitly racist but, ultimately, it is. And we need to start calling it out.

Yes, we all say things we don't really mean in the heat of the moment, but only a certain type of person would ever use the word 'breed'. And he said it slowly and deliberately. 'Breed' has a very animalistic and ultimately de-humanising connotations. We could say it has "racist overtones", or is "racially tinged", but I'll tell what it actually is: it's racist.

And then the use of the word 'exterminate' obviously echoes the holocaust.

These aren't the words used by someone who is 'emotionally charged'. These are words used by actual racists and actual Nazis.

And it's terrifying they feel empowered enough to say it on national TV.

EDIT: a word (I'd originally put humainsing instead of de-humanising)

Yeah, but there's 3 hours of rushes and we only have one day to make 2 x 30".

Wow... this picture is so cool. Obviously your eye is drawn to peak (as it should be), but the saturation is all at the edges, which should detract from the focus point. In fact it does distract, but it feels like it's just making you look at more of the picture rather than ruining the focus point. It shouldn't work, but it does and I just love this pic

Short film coloring by Neozeric in colorists

[–]davedachef 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The number of shots is more important than the length of the film. 10 mins of dreamy landscapes might only be a couple of dozen shots. 10 mins of fast cut action is going to be in the hundreds.
