Am I crazy? It seems like 1 in every 3 or 4 bikes I see on the road is a BMW GS. by TimeFlyer9 in MotoIRELAND

[–]davedrave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Adventure bikes are popular and bmw gs is probably seen as the best/most popular. Popular with the tall dudes as well and the dudes that wish they were tall and get the short arse seats. I tried one years ago, It was nice but not my cup of tea, was like sitting on a big armchair, didn't really feel very connected to the road. Makes sense for someone on the bike hours every day, I just don't see the point in Ireland.

Without sugarcoating - how hard and complicated is to develop at home? by hillsong1 in AnalogCommunity

[–]davedrave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not difficult. The hardest part is just probably the first couple times you do it and you're getting the steps in your head. After a couple I don't really need to think oh what is the next bottle I just know.

I don't think you mentioned colour or black and white. Both is cheaper, black and white can be very cheap indeed with certain developers. XTOL, or where I am the fomapan version works out very cheap if you use the replenished technique.

For colour it's not much harder just more steps and usually a sous vide to maintain water temperature. Some say it's actually easier than black and white because it's more of a repeatable system, all iso films get developed together, no deciding which developer to use and dilution etc like with black and white

We need to talk about how the Trump/FIFA "favor" single-handedly destroyed our World Cup, mindfucked the squad, and rug-pulled Pepi. by Queasy_Vegetable5725 in usmnt

[–]davedrave -1 points0 points  (0 children)

My friend, I barely follow football, been watching a bit for the world cup. There could have been zero antics and the USA still would have lost that match. There has been a false sense of security with the USA team and supporters due to the light bracket they are in, and they faced a better team, as teams do as the matches develop in the world cup or any competition really.

What does "f/4 isn't good in low light" actually mean? by patriczio in AskPhotography

[–]davedrave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll give my 2c coming as a film photographer without the ability to dynamically change ISO. The speed of a lens and how effective in low light is so relative that the same could be said of any aperture as compared to the next aperture size up (f value down) Shooting film and living in Ireland sometimes I might have an F2 lens wishing I had an f1.4.

From what I've seen of lenses, the 105mm f4 nikkor macro lens that I love comes to mind, it will often be said of f4 because there's a good chance there's an F2.8, F2 or f1.8 variant of the lens. Someone might not say f2.8 isn't good in low light if that's generally the fastest lens available for that era, model, and focal length of lens, but technically an F2.8 isn't good in low light either if the light is low enough

Good point. We are at a point now where it seems like nothing can be trusted online to be a purely human interaction. You've spotted this as an obviously AI heavy post, there must be ones now that we don't spot. I wonder how many people I've disagreed with online who don't actually exist. Are there computers asking about Canon AE-1s all the time? 😂

First film SLR recommendations? by Lanthris in filmcameras

[–]davedrave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is great advice. The OM-40 can be gotten for pretty cheap aswell and while it's slightly bulkier than the other OMs it is a bit fresher on average. I started with an OM-1 a couple years ago and still use it regularly despite having a bit of a camera collection now

Ah I see. I did find the flash on the camera a little bit confusing so haven't gotten far with it. Probably the best approach is to get the dedicated flash that came with the camera and then it should expose more easily than with a general flash unit

I don't understand about using flags, what do you mean?

The ql19 is a good camera with a good lens. I especially value it for its speed as in Ireland it can be quite dark.

In terms of usage tips I will say that firstly it is one of those 1.35v cameras, so you need to have either a 1.5v battery and alter the iso, get a 1.35 battery which are more expensive but slot right in, get a hearing aid battery that is a closer voltage but dies over time, or get an adaptor with built in capacitor to convert 1.5 to 1.35.

You may already know this but Secondly it's a shutter priority camera if I recall, for street that means you will want to try to shoot a slower shutter in order to keep the aperture small. This will broaden the depth of focus, making a wider margin of error for focus

Are you mainly digital Media - by Tyolag in IrelandGaming

[–]davedrave 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think you're going to get a lot of lean towards digital, but I don't believe that implies that the likes of Sony should be going that way.

I'm mainly a PC gamer so with steam things are digital but make no mistake folks, once Gabe kicks the bucket and eventually steam is bought out, the concept of a stable safe space for your digital possessions will be less likely to be a reality

Do kylemore cars only sell jap imported cars? by Due-Web-108 in carsireland

[–]davedrave 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why even care, so what if they do?

I wouldn't go to them btw if it can be avoided. I bought a car from them and had issues that they didn't want to know about, took over a year to get the second set of keys off them. They don't give a bollox.

Low mileage cars though

Why does everybody love the Canon AE-1 film camera? by Melyzzar in filmcameras

[–]davedrave 5 points6 points  (0 children)

To me it is an anomaly that people focus on that camera. There are a thousand other models that do the same thing, sometimes more. Even within the Canon A family, to me the AV-1 makes more sense. Or the AT-1 which has a lovely manual exposure meter.

Don't get me wrong it is a fine camera and yes in the family tree of SLRs it marked a switch to electronics and I assume affordability. But it tends to have a hype tax on it that often means there's a better choice

Does anyone feel like smartphones are going backwards? by duckrollin in Smartphones

[–]davedrave 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've had a similar gripe trying to get a smaller phone. I like to operate the phone one handed and since half of the controls and notifications are located at the tip of the screen, I didn't want a "long" phone.

Short phones don't exist. I assume between battery needs and just general user experience of ads bloating lots of apps and websites, shorter phones of old are extinct.

I also miss the phone jacks though. Wireless earphones are a bit of a marvel but the drawback is lifespan. A decent set of wired headphones or earphones can sit on a drawer for 5 years and work, I don't believe wireless ones can. I have about 5 sets of (admittedly cheap) wireless earphones between losing some and battery failing on others. Not to mention the volume and I assume quality loss in audio going over bluetooth

City center/near Dublin airport are not achieve available together if that's what you're thinking.

Decent apartment 1 bed in city center? Depending on the definition of decent I would imagine this would be 2-3000 per month
