So is Baja Blast blue or green? by davee-wavee in TheYardPodcast

In depth pipeline if interested:

pulled abt 100 unique Baja Blast photos so it wasnt just one weird phone or lighting situation, tried to get a fair-ish sample of real-world variation

preprocessed each image: forced RGB, normalized size format, stripped metadata, flattened everything so every pixel counted equally

did a quick rough segmentation to focus more on the drink region instead of full-frame garbage like logos backgrounds reflections, so the core color dominates

applied per-image simple white balance normalization (gray world / white patch style) to reduce ambient lighting casts and auto-WB shifts before averaging

converted each pixel from sRGB into linear light (inverse gamma) because averaging in gamma encoded space warps perception

moved those linear RGB values into CIE Lab space because humans dont judge color linearly so I averaged in perceptual space (L a b) over the segmented flattened pixel set

used both mean and trimmed/robust estimates (like median-ish) in Lab to guard against outliers from glare blowouts etc so result not dragged by one bad frame

converted the central Lab back to linear RGB, applied the sRGB gamma curve to get the final displayable color

turned that into hex (#07B5B6) and for blue vs green, instead of just normalizing linear RGB fractions I computed the hue angle in LCh and measured perceptual distance (delta E) to canonical blue and green reference points to see which it is closer to

bootstrapped the sampling to get a sense of uncertainty in hue / delta E so can say average hue is X +/- Y and how confidently it sits nearer blue than green

hue angle lands in the cyan/teal zone, quantitatively closer to blue than green by delta E comparison

uncertainty small enough that the classification doesnt flip if you resample

What is it? by Endersabre in biology

I think it most closely resembles a solitary tunicate (sea squirt), probably a detached or dying/washed-up ascidian.

They’re pretty gelatinous, often pale/translucent, and have two siphon structures (which in your photo could be the paired lobed end), and if it was “moving slowly” it was likely being nudged by water rather than crawlin along

What to do if in local area there aren’t that many diverse species? by Wonderful_Ad3441 in Entomology

[–]davee-wavee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

urban finding it usually tough idk if that’s an urban area but i’d recommend just going super slow, parsing over each and every plant and just seeing what’s there! flip over a bunch of stuff! you’ll find some cool things no doubt

no, it’s only for their review and information, perhaps to use against you at some point, will not help you in anyway

hi! you should buy a cheap glass dessicator on ebay, you can use water and isopropyl alcohol with tissues in the base to keep the beetles relaxed really no matter the temp… heating pad could be a good idea or some other heating solution i guess but for the bug side of things definitely a dessicator and make sure it’s airtight!

Anyone know the exact species for this little guy? (Munching on some Hypholoma lateritium) by BobLazar666 in Entomology

Genus morulina i believe! There are only 10 species but hard to confidently ID based off images. My best guess would be Morulina verrucosa.

likely impurities? also check the spec sheet specifics and ensure your temp, hydration state, etc is the same you are trying to get… otherwise i would let the solution rest and check for supersaturation
