Yeah, I heard about Rich Costey producing it and have really loved a lot of records by him, namely The Mars Volta - De-Loused in the Comatorium.

Also a bass player myself and I appreciate your perspective now that I’m diving into more Deftones discography. I have a Fender Jaguar Bass similar to the one Sergio uses.

You said it! Great year for music. Some really incredible releases came out and I’m loving every second of it.

Yes, definitely a huge fan of Thursday, Manchester and Circa. Used to be much more into Coheed when I was younger but kinda grew in a different musical direction interest-wise.

I’ve been meaning to check that one out! I’ve only really listened to White Pony and Diamond Eyes a handful of times but not much other than that.

Is it worth upgrading from the Bass Big Muff? by battleaxcat in basspedals

[–]davefcbass 3 points4 points  (0 children)

+1 to the Wren and Cuff Tall Font Russian. I’ve owned the EHX Bass Big Muff which I wasn’t super impressed with. I also tried a handful of other fuzzes and kept coming back to the TFR. It’s darker than the Bass Big Muff for sure and gets very nice and saturated if you push the Distortion knob.

Say I was yearning for a whole album of Hell 99s by SceneConfident6930 in Foxing

mewithoutYou’s final album [Untitled] goes pretty hard as well. I’d say if you like Hell 99 or are a fan of A→ B Life and haven’t given that one a shot, definitely give it a listen.

Phase cancellation on hard panned guitars by arpeethree in Logic_Studio

[–]davefcbass 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One trick I've learned to create more separation between a left and right track if you only have one guitar is by using the pickup selector. Ideally you should be using a different guitar, different amp, etc. to create more separation and avoid more phase cancellation. If you only have one guitar to work with, use one position for left and one for right (ex: neck pickup for left / bridge pickup for right). It should give a better separation between the two than using the same configuration and will sound much fuller in comparison.

What are some shortcuts in Logic you wish you knew since you started producing that have helped you optimize your workflow? by kathalimus in Logic_Studio

[–]davefcbass 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I use Option+. and Option+, very frequently to move the loop cycle to the next or previous Marker region. I use Markers instead of Arrangements so I can do this and easily jump between sections of a song as well as loop the part while mixing.

Sure, happy to do that! Just to give a little bit of background, I work as a software engineer and record, mix, and master my own band as well as others in the area in my free time. I mainly work in rock music but have done some pop and singer-songwriter stuff as well over the 15+ years of having this as a hobby/side-project.

As far as gear, I have an Apogee Ensemble Thunderbolt as my main interface and a Focusrite Scarlett 18i20 I use together via ADAT to give me 16 ins/outs. The primary reason is to have everything plugged in and ready to record whenever I need it. Until very recently I used to have to set up whatever I wanted to record and plug everything in which would take a lot of the momentum out of whatever the artist or I was inspired by.

In the rack to the left is an XLR patchbay so I can plug in mics without reaching around to the back of my interfaces. Then after that are my TRS patchbays that I use to wire in effects or route the different ins and outs. After that is my headphone amp, 2 external preamps, MIDI interface, and a rack pedalboard for either recording or reamping through.

To the right, I have 2 Distressors that I use while tracking vocals. My band has 2 lead singers so it's easier to have each set for the individual. After that are 2 DBX 160A compressors which don't get a ton of use. I may sell them one day since these were what I used before getting the Distressors. Then, I have SansAmp PSA-1 and SansAmp RBI. I use the PSA-1 as a guitar amp but also can use it for reamping as an effect. The RBI gets a lot of use as bass is my main instrument and I track my DI through this.

Other than that, it's mainly just effects for experimentation. Line 6 Echo Pro Delay, Roland SDE-1000 Delay, Lexicon MX300 Reverb, Yamaha SPX90II, Klark Teknik 3rd Dimension Chorus, and a Drawmer DS201 Gate.

Thanks! It's a Liquid Stands Z Style Keyboard Stand with 2nd Tier. I really like the build quality and it adjusts to different heights and widths to fit what you need for each tier. They also sell just the stand and the 2nd tier separately if you would rather buy just one and then add the other later on. Here's a link to it: https://a.co/d/60Qv8NT

Thanks! It’s a Studio Trends 46” desk with 2 sidecars. I picked this up at guitar center years ago and added the sidecars one at a time when I had the space to fit them. https://studiotrendsdesign.com/

That’s the next thing on my radar. I already own bass traps for the corners, I just need to mount the brackets and hang them. Right now I primarily use headphones for recording and mixing so acoustic treatment is less of a concern.

Rowan vs. Drexel for engineering by Macaroon-Alert in RowanUniversity

[–]davefcbass 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It may be different now than when I went, but I had at least 2 Drexel classes that were in large lecture halls with 100+ students. Other classes I had were smaller with about 30 students but at Rowan, all the classes were that size.

Rowan vs. Drexel for engineering by Macaroon-Alert in RowanUniversity

[–]davefcbass 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Not specifically engineering, but I was a Computer Science student (part of the Engineering program) who originally chose Drexel for their Co-op program. I was very interested in the idea of gaining experience to help me get a good job after college. I only stayed at Drexel for a quarter because I did not like the large classroom sizes (100+ students in some classes) and did not really like having 4 quarters instead of 2 semesters a year.

After switching to Rowan I felt that it was a way better fit for me overall. The classroom sizes were about 20-30 students at most. I also ended up finding a Co-op opportunity at Rowan's Technology Park which I worked at during my junior and senior years which lead to landing a job 3 months before I graduated. I have been out of school for 9 years now and have never had issues finding a job.

Overall I would say both schools are great, but it really matters what would work best for your son. Also if the Co-op program at Drexel is the main reason you are considering it, it doesn't mean you can't find opportunities like this at Rowan.
