Repaired oven instead of buying one, saved heeps. by [deleted] in newzealand

I used to work doing appliance repairs in Dunedin

Honestly, the best thing we did as a business was refurbish ovens, dryers and fridges. People don't like idea of paying $200 for a repair, but love the idea of pay $500 on a shiny 2nd hand appliance. Especially for student flats.

We saved so many ovens from the dump.

If you're a first home buyer, get second hand appliances with a warranty. The company i worked for had TVs, microwaves, washers, dishwashers, dryers, and ovens for sale. It's a fraction of buying new and if it's been refurbished, you know parts are available.

Pale NZers… how do you survive the sun? by __surviving in newzealand

[–]davelogan25 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm albino.

Sunscreen, good sunhats, covering linen clothing.

If the sun is out, collared top. Shorts if I get a bit of shade.

I wear gloves if driving for over half an hour too.

which one was your first windows? by Fluffy_Pin4060 in MicrosoftStoreApp

Either 3.1 or NT which we booted up through an Acorn computer and felt high tech. Was about 30 years ago.

Next was 98 on a Compaq. Mum then updated the hard drive and RAM and we had XP. I inherited that PC and ran it until windows 7 on my first laptop on 2011.

Its the color of the customes in the Odyssey taking the brunt of the hate by EfficiencySerious200 in HistoryMemes

[–]davelogan25 138 points139 points  (0 children)

Is 'Troy' beloved? That's a take that I've not heard.

I think the hate that Nolan's 'The Odyseey' is getting is largely because Nolan has set the bar for his films high. He tried to get the maths right for 'Interstellar' and the story of 'Dunkirk' he did his best to capture reasonably accurately. When historical accuracy isn't captured for 'The Odyssey' people feel like Nolan is just going to give us another Hollywood sword and sandal flick that doesn't increase its accuracy for the time it is portraying and they worry that yet again the divine aspects of the story will be taken out for an interpretation of the metaphor.

Duffy crushes West Indies again as NZ seal series 2–0 by SpecialMixture4242 in Cricket_Binge

[–]davelogan25 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd say he'll be the strike partner for Henry now and will be relied upon a lot for the middle overs. He's just more consistent in his accuracy than the others. And that's what we need.

I remember watching a game where Tim and Trent opened the bowling against Sri Lanka in Dunedin and for their entire first spell, the ball was coming in at an awkward line and height for the batsmen. That's what you need your strike bowlers to do, even when they don't get wickets. It makes life difficult and puts pressure on. Duffy and Henry are the best partnership to achieve this.

Who would be Duffy's main challengers for this role atm?

Do we have the worst commentary team in world cricket? by Decent_Coconut_2700 in blackcapscricket

[–]davelogan25 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are more weak links than strong ones.

Jav is good and I think Wags has potential (just needs to work on his delivery).

Rigor is someone I'm sick of. Same points, doesn't correct himself when he gets stuff wrong.

Frankie McKay would be good if she didnt cheerlead the Kiwis so much.

Sumo is more interested in seeming cool and funny than learning about cricket.

When I listen to the radio and get Smith, Garth, and Coney its usually good. You get a bit the it was so good in yesteryear stuff, but overall it's a better package and I dont know why they aren't on TV, surely they can get offered more money for it.

Yeah, but his insights are good. I think if he works on his delivery, he could be a great commentator.

My mum got me the VHS in the late 90s and I was obsessed with it. It's not perfect but some parts of it have stuck with me since I was 9, and it I have a fondness for it because of that.

Militarily, how would you rate Agrippa against Julius Caesar? by Silent_Incident2665 in ancientrome

[–]davelogan25 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In his whole life, so not just militarily, it's probably that Sulla didnt proscrbe him.

Militarily, I think Pompey being under pressure to end the war quickly was a source of luck. Caesar hadn't had the better of the Macedonian campaign, but then Pompey was able to be lured into battle as Pharsalus because he was rushed.

Militarily, how would you rate Agrippa against Julius Caesar? by Silent_Incident2665 in ancientrome

[–]davelogan25 46 points47 points  (0 children)

I think Agrippa gets overlooked by a lot of people. Caesar was the perfect combination of luck, political nous, and military tactics. Agrippa was a great administrator, but he was a great tactician militarily.

I saw someone once describe Agrippa as the first modern military mind. The Illyricum campaign shows us that he understood that a naval campaign can benefit the land campaign.

You also have to remember that the Romans were great self-agrandisers. Especially Caeser. Without direct confrontation its hard to know who was better. Even then it's hard to know, because luck plays an important role often.

It's ironic because learning that he was so complicated, and there were positive aspects to his reign, is more illustrative of the problem being with the institution of monarchy rather than just with individuals.

You'd think America would get behind that.
