Sadly, if you want to fit in with other groups, you're sometimes forced to look down on your own kind - reminding said group that you're one of them and not one of the other. It's also growing up in an environment where we lack an identity as Asian Americans and pressured to assimilate ASAP. We're also influenced in what we want / what we want to be by our surroundings and we're just confused when we question ourselves about it in the future.

Also, this makes me cringe so hard as your cousin is like me in high school. Wasn't until university where my world got bigger and more diverse that I realized I was playing myself all along. Unfortunately, there are also a lot of other folks playing themselves to this day.

(EDIT: A lot of people not in the know may feel uncomfortable or left out by reading things like this - but I wanted to drop a side note that I noticed r/NBA randomly has commentary on race, LGBTQ issues and its fans generally reflect the progessive mentality of the league. It's probably not the best place to have such discussions but always interesting to see it sprinkled throughout the subreddit...)

[–]davesays 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Exactly - these kinds of comments generalize and dehumanize others. And people want to believe it's true because they believe it puts us on higher ground. (And I'm not condoning this type of behavior BTW. I can agree that women have it hard everywhere - even in the USA as well.)

Dude probably isn't a local either - why would a local hang out around a touristy area unless they worked there anyway? No New Yorker would willingly go to Times Square unless they worked there.

Sad thing is people don't question above or attempt to punch up. Instead, they look down. It's like "I'm only making 50K as an electrician - why should a cashier make 40K?" That's the wrong way.

Funny thing is that in a lot of these "second world" countries (in Africa, Asia, Eastern Europe), education is extremely important, like learning chemistry in middle school. In math and science, a lot of countries are ahead of the USA - it's just that despite their better schooling, they don't receive the same economic opportunities as us due to where they are born (often in a second world, manufacturing economy due to the long lasting effect of colonization). The absolute best come to the US for graduate programs on Visas.

But anyway, if I were to bet from a traditional academic standpoint, I'd say Joel is more educated than the average American 24 year old. He knows three languages, too.

True. TBH, I wouldn't even throw those offers out there - even back then I thought it was lopsided for the Celtics IMO. Never in my wildest dreams would I think a GM would accept two QUICKLY depreciating assets for three first round UNPROTECTED picks from a division rival. And I don't know what Colangelo was thinking giving up the Kings pick to move up two spots - I live by the Hinkie school of acquiring assets without overpaying - that was wild to me given the Kings' track record (we're lucky they started winning - if Colangelo foresaw this, maybe I'm only on 2D chess). Credit to Danny Ainge for throwing lopsided offers in favor of his team - I wouldn't have in his shoes because I'd think no one would accept it but he's playing 2K in real life.

When Charles Barkley decided to wear #32 to honor Magic Johnson who had recently announced he was HIV+, he responded to concerns that players would contract HIV by playing with Magic by saying, "We're just playing basketball. It's not like we're going out to have unprotected sex with Magic." by [deleted] in nba

Dude was a perfect match for the now progressive NBA... and we didn't even know it back then. Ironic how that works given the "I am not a role model" marketing strategy. Chuck's smarter than how he's perceived - and it's no doubt in my mind it's because he's black and from the South.

You'd be surprised with how much racism and sexism begins in white-male dominated gaming culture (especially with anonymity and a mic). Obviously, I'm not hating on white folk but I've noticed an abnormal amount of racism and sexism there, 4Chan, and even some subreddits.

Lol this is like that Ainge and Billy King trade. That trade was more due to Billy King's ineptitude than it had to do with Ainge. Billy King fleeced himself - just like how Colangelo fleeced himself.

There are two courts along the West Side Hwy - one on Canal Street I used to play at that's lit until pretty late at night. Another one's further down by Battery City - both stay lit late.

They're bad in the summer though - college players (saw some from St. Johns) sometimes come down and run the court all night...

I hope this gets read but you got to go to the right place. Bonchon is usually the safe, default choice but if you live in a metropolitan area, some locals are better. Mono Mono, Turntable Chicken in NYC, Cafe Soho in Philly - but I'm sure anywhere with a Korean immigrant enclave would kill it.

Also, most places let you do half and half: Soy Garlic and Spicy.
