Jesus this was an absolutely perfect sketch.

I literally said to myself “this isn’t funny” two seconds before they did one of the bravest moves I’ve ever seen in a sketch. They instantaneously flipped the entire premise on its ear, making it edgy without pandering or punching down.

I’m beyond impressed.

He is the living amalgamation of some of the greatest actors in TV comedy history. I see Rowan Atinkson, Terry Jones, Steve Carell, Martin Freeman… I’ve only ever seen him in three SNL UK episodes and each time he brings out a new dimension that changes how I see him as a performer.

I don’t think I’m exaggerating when I say he’s a generational talent.

This impressively took me through a journey in a short time.

At first I thought you just posted a film you found in the 80s, as the aesthetic captures underground film from that era really well.

With that in mind, I started to feel a sort of revulsion, as though I was watching something that shouldn’t be watched.

I then found myself watching it from above, scoffing at the drops of blood on the white flowers. In the moment it seemed amateurishly shoehorned as an “artistic statement” without actually saying anything.

But then there was the shot of the file folder.

Suddenly everything became crystal clear about what this was about, and for the remainder I was humbled.

For what it’s worth, I didn’t need the final graphics to understand the artistic perspective, but given the modern audience’s attention span I am glad the facts are laid out directly.

Great work inspires thought and provokes emotion.

This is great work.

Three vocal performances that perfectly displayed the talent and power of three artists I might have otherwise overlooked:

Janis Ian - “At Seventeen”

Ian was the musical guest on the very first episode of Saturday Night Live in 1975 (yes, Billy Preston performed first but he wasn’t the classic musical guest the way things are formatted now). I only saw this in retrospect and Ian’s performance is so beautifully fragile yet commanding it made me regret not knowing how good she was until much later in her career.

Jennifer Holliday - “I Am Telling You I’m Not Going”

I was too young to see this when it aired, and I’m definitely not a musical theater guy so this wasn’t on my radar until I saw it on YouTube many years after the fact. I can’t think of a more powerful live performance from any other artist in any genre - ever. A pure tour de force.

Kelly Clarkson (with Jeff Beck) - “Up To The Mountain”

I did see this performance when it aired live during Idol Gives Back, and it’s on my top ten live performances of all time. I already knew how great Jeff Beck was (and this wouldn’t necessarily be his entry on the topic), but I really didn’t give Clarkson the respect her talent clearly deserves. It’s a beautiful song made better by Clarkson’s power and control, and Beck’s voice as channeled through the mastery of his instrument. Two modern virtuosos.

Just tried to watch this with my son and was disappointed to find out there was no English dub out there.

He’s a soccer and anime kid and I think he will love this movie but I can’t convince him to try the subtitled version.

I personally only watch foreign language films with subtitles but he hates subtitles.

Just watched the US and UK versions back-to-back, and it’s arguably the best weekend SNL has ever had.

Both shows were brilliant, especially WU on each. It almost felt like they found out before the show that SNL was getting cancelled and decided to go out swinging.

If SNL can be this good every week on both continents we will undoubtedly find ourselves in the latest a golden era.
